    Mate, that was BRILLIANT!!!
    Talk about recycling. 27% is damn good. I’m kicking myself for everything that I’ve wasted.
    Four important points:
    1) Your Mrs is an angel. If I tried casting on such a nicely paved driveway as yours, I’d be sharing the dog’s bowl all week.
    2) I don’t want to alarm you, but there was some strange bloke messing about in your garage - there’s a glimpse of him towards the end of your vid
    3) I've heard of this VegOilGuy bloke... handsome chap I'm told... but who's this Dweeb character?
    4) Can I hire you to clean my garage please

      Yeah i recon i could have really gotten a touch more but on this particular ocassion i just wanted to try it this way as it was my first Al/Br remelt. i should have broke it up more with a hammer and sifted the crap out premelt but thats something ill do next time. Yeah my missis puts up with alot of stuff but shes married to a youtube sensation so she accepts it. That swdweeb guy gonna be the next big thing matey his name will be up in lights (just under our name). Strange bloke yeah but hes cleaning so ill just ignore him🤘😏

    I do a lot of casting with lead alloy. Dross is mostly lead oxide. To remove the O atom I add carbon. I just use sawdust but any carbon will work. During the heat the Carbon and excess oxygen makes Co2 and goes away leaving lead and some ash. I get back over 70% back. Should work with other alloys also.

    • @russellpalmer5610
      @russellpalmer5610 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, you just add the sawdust to the slag while it is hot enough to burn? If you are melting aluminum cans would this also work to float the dross off? redfox007me2@yahoo.com

    • @skylerlehmkuhl135
      @skylerlehmkuhl135 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Doesn't work with aluminum (and aluminum alloys) though, because aluminum bonds to oxygen more strongly than carbon does.

    • @Eutropios
      @Eutropios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lead has a relatively weaker bond with oxygen compared to say Aluminum because of how weak the nuclear forces are on the outer most electrons

      I'll try to, but I don't think I know many who are interested in watching people melt and cast molten metal, but I'll see what I can do!
      Needless to say, even I was getting frustrating with the amount of slag you had to dig out. I was starting to think, "Is there gonna be any metal to cast at all!?" 😂

  • @eelcohoogendoorn8044
    @eelcohoogendoorn8044 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Should have molten some salt in your crucible before putting the scraps in. Dissolves the oxides, which allows the metal to coagulate; even tiny hidden drops, and stops new oxides from forming. Plain table salt (sodium or potassium) works but you can add some magnesium or calcium chloride too (often sold as deicing-salts) which are more aggressive in dissolving oxides. Doesnt add much cost or complexity and youll be throwing away zero metallic metals.this way.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dam matey you sound like you know your stuff, too technical for me mate I’ll just stick to what I know I don’t mind if I have to throw out a tiny bit😁👍🏻

    • @eelcohoogendoorn8044
      @eelcohoogendoorn8044 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well lets say sounds can be deceiving... I never actually tried this with copper base metals, only zinc and aluminium, but I think it should work much the same. Shouldnt be too technical to try dumping some table salt in your crucible tho; melting metal is an experimental science id say..
      I think you might be surprised how much metal you could still get out of it.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, ordinary salt works normally. You can also throw a powder of charcoal, it will restore copper from oxides.

    Hey D, I go back and watch older videos you made when I have the time. Always enjoy them.
    Anyways, on this recovering from slag vid, I just wanted to point something out. Dude, that was a huge crucible compared to the small size coins you made. You poured like a pro. Every single coin was completely filled with no excess on the molds, round after round up until the last little bit that was left. Awesome work man. You should pat yourself on the back for that skill.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah thanks for that 🤗. Some days everything just goes perfect 👌🏻 other times not so much but I don’t stress , no point stressing I don’t recon . The guys I work with wonder how I’m soo laid back at my actual work even after a big fire or explosion but if no ones hurt and we learn something from it I think that’s a good thing , plus as I tell them we don’t get paid any extra to stress out so I won’t be going that😉😁

    About 30% recovery is really good, too!
    Next time I suggest doing some preprocessing before actually melting it. A simple acid wash would do a lot to separate out the metal from the carbon and other crap that you don't want in there, and should improve your overall yield. If you want to really get into it you can start doing displacement reactions to really isolate the Cu and Au specifically.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ohh that sounds a bit to technical for me but yeah next heap I do I’ll definitely do some clean up first even if it’s as simple as crushing it up and sifting the sand and rocks premelt🤷🏻‍♂️😁👍🏻

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m no expert but I know that taps and shower heads and that type of stuff it’s very thinly chrome plated over the brass , my electrician mate says electrical switches and some plugs have silver in them or are silver coated so there’s a couple ideas for ya. Even gold plated electrical things are around everywhere but gold plated anything contain very little gold , fun fact an Oz of gold can be flattened out into a 300 square foot piece of gold 😯. A bit of rambling here I know but hopefully I answered some of ya question😁👍🏻

  • @shaneyork300

    27% that's pretty dang good. I know 2 people personally that's done muffin ingots and trial sand molds. (beginners stuff) I'll be willing to bet that they threw away their slag.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah i used to throw away my slag but from now on I definitely won’t. If I skimmed the metal properly there probably would’ve been a lot less than 27%, it could’ve been lazy skimming on my part but either way people have found it very interesting

  • @Shadow_of_Christ

    Just asking because my scientific mind is curious but if you melted a bunch of different metals together and filled the crucible up would the density of different metals be layered if you just let the crucible cool and put it all out as one block?

    would a slotted spoon or steel mesh be good for slag scraping?
    im not sure i the slag is too fine for a slotted spoon, or if the liquid metal is too thick for mesh strainers, but i figure if it works, you would be able to remove more slag and lose less metal.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a slotted spoon should work fine as this molten metal can be as thin as water if it’s heated correctly but steel mesh would not work👌🏻😁

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having said that it wouldn’t really work with aluminium only brass and copper and these mixed metal alloys . aluminium has a very thick surface tension so wouldn’t work well 👍🏻

  • @blackgriffinxx

    Just some advice, you need to grind the slag to powder and suspend it in a fluid that is more dense than the slag and less dense than the copper, so the waste slag will float to the top and the copper will sink to the bottom. Then you will get nearly 100% recovery. The density of copper slag is only around 6 grams per cm cubed, while pure copper is about 9 grams per cm cubed. Aluminum is also heavier than its slag and I know that copper is around 3 times the weight of aluminum, but I can’t find the ratio. I hope this helps you in the future.
