Hearing the roar of the jets back in Atsugi was a daily thing for me during school and at home.

Only 110 and 107 showed any touch or any semblance of finesse with their landings.

I wasn't aware the F-14A was still in US service at the time of this video. I thought they had all been phased out in favor of the Bravo and Delta-model Tomcats?

No. They kept flying with tf30 horrible engine.

@@dindrmindr626 I imagine that must have been quite the change for the Black Aces going from F-14A's to Super Hornets.

@@dindrmindr626 I recall some USMC squadrons went straight from the F-4 to the Hornet. That must've been an even more radical switch.

Did anyone noticed an ECM on the port side nose gear?
Is there a reason to explain why F-14As were upgraded to have the same capabilities as the F-14B but retained the TF-30 P&W engines?
Edit: Another subtle detail of these F-14As is that there is a GPS dome, TACAN Antenna, and UHF Antenna.

Thats because B's are A+'s with a lantirn pod. Towards the end of her career, the navy wanted to do PGM's with the a-6's gone. And a added benefit, They could ask congress for more money to keep the 14's running if they could call them "multi-role"
You'd want the entire fleet running the same equipment. maintenance, training, parts commonality etc.
D's on the other hand are a different bird altogether.

F-14As that have the same capabilities but retain the TF30 P&W turbofan engines.

Are you talking about the yellow bulge on the port nose gear door? I thought the ECM was in the bulge underneath the TCS.

looks like they forgot they were landing on a 5000' strip rather than a 500' deck... those were some hard landings... lol
