The white stuff he puts on the leaf is slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and that creates a chemical reaction with the betle nut - it helps absorption allegedly - and it also produces the red saliva which is what they spit out - it's everywhere in PNG as well. They sell the lime in little bags there.
Love your videos Ben, like the fact you get amongst the locals and talk to them well attempt to. Just curious tho what's happened to Mr bald as haven't seen him post recently
I was addicted to betel nut when i was in Myanmar, there is nothing dirty or nasty about it, it gets you high, relaxes you and calms you down. I love it. Each time i tried to buy some, it was always for free. I wish i could chew some right now. The first buzz was the most intense.
I grew up in Papua New Guinea where chewing betelnut or 'buai' is also a national past time. In PNG its chewed differently normally eating half or a whole betelnut (like a small round ping pong ball) with 'kambang' or lime powder and 'daka' which is a mustard stick which grows like a vine around trees. You eat the nut and keep dipping the mustard stick in the lime and chewing it until you get the red consistency the chewer wants. Some chewers will take out the wad of chewed buai and check its redness and then put it back in their mouths. You don't swallow the liquid while chewing, you spit it out, hence all the red on the pavements etc. Nothing is added in PNG, just the nut, lime and mustard stick. Betelnut can vary in strength too depending on where its grown and some prefer an older nut and others a young soft nut. I tried it many times growing up there but never got used to the taste, its acquired for sure. If you are an inexperienced chewer it can give you a good punch and make you feel sick as it is a strong stimulant. Its the PNG and Asia equivalent of chewing a coca leaf. Many survive on buai throughout the day, saying as long as I have my buai and cigarettes I don't need anything else. Love PNG, beautiful country and people. Hope you visit it one day. If you loved Timor Leste you will love PNG, just next door.
