    One thing that still wasn't commented on here was the way the Aro flag and Ace flag are made to merge together into the Aroace flag.
    That's why I tend to lean towards the five stripe version of the asexual flag, with two purples, matching both the Aro flag... and the Aroace flag. Honestly I was surprised the Ace flag DOESN'T just take the lower components of the Aroace flag lol.

    • @DaSilverIngot
      @DaSilverIngot ปีที่แล้ว +65

      I think the aroace flag is ok as the sunset version, because if you didn’t know, there is a version of the aroace flag that uses two tones of blue at the bottom, one white stripe, and two tones of yellow at the top (yellow or orange)

    • @thelocalshoop
      @thelocalshoop ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@DaSilverIngot Totally! I'm aroace myself and I like messing around with the hues on the sunset version.
      Although.. I greatly dislike changes made to either the ace or aro flag individually. The vibes are thrown off and I'm not going to lie they look godawful ugly. The aromantic flag is one of my favorites for how aesthetically appealing it looks but trying to make either of them match each other completely ruins what makes the other one so iconic.

    • @fruity4820
      @fruity4820 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@DaSilverIngoti love the sunset version and i think its fine on its own, but why does it have nothing to do with the aro and ace flags? If i saw it between all the pride flags without prior knowlage i would have guess that its the gay men flag, the sunset motif but with blues would have been the perfact complementor to the lesbian flag. I am so conflicted

    • @somethingclever5
      @somethingclever5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@fruity4820 The sunset aroace flag was actually designed purposefully to be visually distinct from the aro and ace flags, to represent aroace as a complete identity in and of itself and not just a mashup of aromantic and asexual. Differentiated conceptions of attraction don’t serve some aroaces in the way it does for alloaces or alloaros, and I think that’s totally fair to them! So I think it’s nice that all sorts of aspecs have a flag that represents them in a way that feels true to them :)

    what i love about the most recent polyamory flag (the one in bottem left at 8:00) is that you can put the white triangle with heart on any flag without getting in the way of anything too much and having the combined flag

      Totally agreed! My eye was immediately drawn towards it. Even though I really love the colour hues and specific symbol for the top right on that screen, the symbol itself will definitely be lost or indiscernible at a glance from a distance. I also like the lower left flag’s asymmetric chevron; it adds a nice flair to the flag in both vertical and horizontal orientations, and it’d feel quite distinct amongst other pride flags in every original or edited form in this video, especially all the symmetrical ones (even if those are the most easily visually appealing).

    • @ifer1280
      @ifer1280 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree! You can even swap out the symbol, just the asymmetric chevron is enough. And the fact that the infinity heart is not an exclusively polyamorous symbol really is a big flaw in the other two new flags.

    Another advantage of the five-stripe ace flag is that it matches all the other five-stripe flags, like I sometimes see ace lesbians using that version so that the two flags match up side-by-side (and I see a lot of trans lesbians picking the five-stripe version of the lesbian flag for the same reason). I think it's nice to have multiple versions where possible, so that any two flags can be made to match like that

    I feel like the flags already kind of have a shared language in the horizontal stripes and the unique set of colors the flags gravitate to. like how flags of countries tend not to use pink, purple, and gray as much as pride flags do, and I feel like there's probably a difference in how common certain colors are in pride flags vs. country flags (like how red is super common in countries but super rare in pride flags). I feel like generally people can develop an eye for discerning between the two. but I do like the idea of putting symbols on the flags! that would be fun, seeing what symbols each group comes up with

    • @andreja9425
      @andreja9425 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      personally i kinda hate the horizontal stripes being the motif for most pride flags cuz i think it’s kinda boring and looks too american but i digress

    • @iantino
      @iantino ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I'm not much into pride flags because of some personal issues, but, in my mere opinion, I don't think that is too much of a theme because, even though the colors are distinct, they are also in a pretty regular form of republican-ish countries, thus making them more plain and related to those. Although I think that the flags themselves having that break with tradition in colors is both a result of being made by and to queer people, and a statement of rupture, so it is great already.
      But to continue in that theme of rupture, the flags could use more diverse designs, as:
      Offset and uncommon partitions (as Portugal and Seychelles flags, as well piles, gyrons, etc.)
      Uncommon charges (as Brazil lozenge, old lesbian flag triangle, stylised letters, *dragons,* arms, hands, clothing, etc.)
      Different edges (wavy, indented, emblatted, invected, bevilled, even putting a shape as line, as trefly, which is an line as a trefoil)
      There are a ton of symbolism through the forms also that could be explored in pride flags rather than color.

    I think the excessive number of stripes, particularly two adjacent stripes with two shades of the same colour, in many of these are an artifact of the flags being conceived and often only existing in a digital form (or perhaps hand drawn, particularly in the early days) and not prototyped as an actual fabric flag. Because perfectly accurate flags in digital form looks kind of boring, flags are really meant to be flapping in the wind, that's why conventional "rules" for a good flag in vexillology emphasises simplicity so much because it's supposed to be distinct even when it's hanging limply in a gentle breeze.
    It probably would be best if the flags were designed to be as simple as possible with few stripes and simple shapes, but that online representations were made with the flat solid colours being represented by gradients, and the flag as a whole being very subtly made a bit wavy. Also on screen slightly desaturated colours look better, while for print you want strong saturated colours.

    • @avadrumm
      @avadrumm 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Printed flags use the pantone (or similar system) color model and digital flags use RGB. So really there should just be 2 sets of colors for each flag, one for print and one for digital. In my opinion they should be designed for print first and the RGB colors should just be approximated so that they look similar (on a calibrated display) to how the print colors do in real life.

    1. Color is important, but hue is WAY more important. The trans flag, gay flag, and lesbian flag get it, they look gorgeous. You can have weird colors, but they need to have cohesion. Thats why I think all the bi umbrella flags look like dogshit.
    2. I wasn’t sold on the wavy lines, but the last flag in the vid was glorious. Part of me thinks all the flags should have wavy lines to create cohesion.

    Personally I'm more of a "if you use an image, go REALLY simple" kind of person, so a dragon silhouette that is pretty detailed wouldn't work for my tastes. Even though dragons are really cool. I would either go symbolic, so a simple image that refers to a dragon, or something that has to do with dragons in some way, but isn't a dragon, like fire.
    I like it when flags do simple designs that are still distinct and not used often, like the diagonal lines and lily pads of the Frisian flag, or the curved X on the Achterhoekse flag (symbolising the landscape with winding sand paths). Both of these are not completely out there in terms of design, they're clearly a flag referencing other flags, but they're also not the same as all the other flags ever. Same with the Japanese flag, circles aren't completely impossible, but rare enough that they're very memorable.

    i absolutely love the idea of the dragon on the flag EXCEPT. in my mind dragons in queer symbolism are automatically sorted as an ace thing. i don't remember the specifics, but when i was researching flags i found out that the ace community many years ago adopted dragons as a symbol. i don't know why. i don't know if it's still relevant. but it might be worth it to find another cool creature/symbol for the gender squad just for that
    also: i prefer 4 stripe aro flag because the specific shade of purple on the ace flag was chosen due to it being in the logo of the at-the-time largest + most recognizeable ace forum, iirc. it represents community, and as an ace person, the sense of community is rather important to me ! in my opinion, i think keeping it to just one purple stripe keeps its message clearer.
    to my knowledge, the green on the aro flag represents the different kinds of aromanticism. while having multiple shades of green does contribute to this thought, i do wonder if just saying the colour green itself represents that works just as well... or, even making it so there is one stripe of black, and two stripes of green? though, that could look really strange. i haven't tested it.

    I was absolutely not sold on your nonbinary flag last episode, but the dragon and the color stripe in the middle is actually great. Also, talking about the aroace combo flag, the tendency for split attraction model to use a heart in the middle to display two flags (Instead of a chevron like the progress flag, and I never know if the flag in the heart is romantic or the sexual), and giving us kink flag history and and analysis would all be awesome!
    Also, I’d be interested in looking at the old triangle lesbian flag, making a corresponding gay one (with meaning), and then looking at the bi-angles!

    I like the idea of having the trans flags having something with an “o“ symbol, e.g. agender (as someone has already suggested) would be ø, and transmasc or -fem could have the male and female symbols respectively and the non binary one as well with the star one

  • @jubisisters
    @jubisisters ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My big prideflag hot take as an enby demigirl is that not only is the nonbinary flag's color scheme just plain ugly at least in its current pattern, by following too closely to other flag designs it fails to capture what it means to be nonbinary. I would incorporate a mix of different elements and some additional colors to emphasize the ways that being non binary is defined by not falling within a paradigm, not following the larger pattern. For example: what if we started from the trans flag, choosing different shades of pink and blue to represent the ways that femme and masc-aligned nonbinary identities like mine are distinct from binary gender identities they vaguely orbit around. Take the white stripe out of the middle and replace with purple, as the existing meaning of blending feminine and masculine suits a central role. On one side, add either a yellow chevron with a white symbol inlaid, or a white chevron with a yellow symbol, not sure what the symbol is but let's go with a dragon because fuck yeah. And then, on the other side, do just one vertical stripe to contrast the others in black.
    That's not the only way something like this could work, but that is one way it could work. I might also want to find a way to squeeze a xenogender representing green/turquoise in there, maybe as part of the pattern with the yellow and white chevron/symbol? But I wouldn't want it to be unprintable, and 6 colors is already a lot for like... fabric. But I just have so many frustrations with the nonbinary flag, feeling pretty entirely unrepresented byits color meanings and just really disliking the way the color combo ends up looking. Honestly it all sort of comes down to the yellow, it's just too McDonald's for me, I think a gold would look better if possible tbh

    it’s interesting, i only just figured out while watching this the design philosophy of the gender-fluid flag. there’s the pink purple and blue stripes which are a little trifecta much like in the bi flag, for instance, and then there’s a dichotomy with the white and black stripes, which are parallel in the design. if you look at the flag with one eye on the tri-colors and the other eye on the black/white dichotomy it makes much more sense, but it’s tricky, bc that principle of the color element and b/w element is easy to miss. your redesigns weren’t bad in this but i think they lost this aspect, i wonder what else could be tried to preserve this, when even the original doesn’t quite nail it. maybe thinning the white and black stripes?

    Color theory note: Colors look very different depending on their context. You can’t just copy and paste a color from one context to another and expect it to even look like the same color in both. For it to look the same in both contexts, you actually have to use two slightly different colors. Doing this well can require a bit of experience with color and color theory.
    But yeah, it may actually be the case that matching the colors in different pride flags to each other would improve them, but you need to have them actually be slightly different shades in reality in order for them to look like they’re the same to our eye.

    Oh, really funny that these videos were recommended to me today. I had an interesting idea a few days ago: What if we could create a dynamic system to create flags that represents every aspect of a person? Just like the GB flag is a combination of multiple other flags. But since every individual flag uses quite a few colors this might get really tricky.
    When it comes to the individual flags I'd actually try to split all flags into categories and create a separate template or base flag for every category. Like: all flags about gender should look somewhat the same. Same for sexuality/romance, sexual interest, etc.
    In your videos I've also noticed even more odd color choices. E.g. the 7 stripes version of the lesbian flag. The middle pink has very low saturation compared to every other color.
    Also, a global color palette would be a great idea. To make them look more uniform and also to make it easier for people who create flags, so they can reuse colors more easily.

    6:26 yet, ya still forgot about the aroace flag. Wich I do have some interesting design ideas to match it with both aro and ace flags, you see the sunset version of the flag? The one with orange white and blue. Why don’t we make the other flag designs based off of this? I imagine the ace flag as a dawn, changing the grey and black for opaque blues, or just two shades of grey, and adding an extra stripe of purple, always keeping the white stripe in the center. Now, the aro flag, I imagine it as a rainy day, switching the colors upside down and changing the black and grey again with two shades of opaque blue or straight up two shades of grey, again, keeping the white stripe in the center. And the Aroace flag is unchanged, (sunset design). I like to call these the: dawn, rainy and sunset flags.

    • @syro33
      @syro33 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think the colors for aro and ace are pretty set in stone, though, purple/green plus grayscale is a pretty iconic color scheme. And the sunset aroace flag is different from those colors purposefully, representing those who see their aroace orientation as like, inseparably linked. So I think it's probably alright as it is right now, though perhaps an alternate purple+green version of the aroace flag could be interesting? (taking the top two green stripes from the aro flag, and the bottom two from the proposed 5 stripe aro flag)
      Personally as someone who's fully ace and... probably aromantic but at least somewhere on the aromantic spectrum, I see the two as kind of seperate aspects (probably because romance seems nice to me in theory, it just doesnt feel right in practice) so as much as i like the sunset aroace color scheme i identify more with the aro and ace flags seperately.

    One thing that always bothered me about the most popular aroace flag (the one with orange, yellow, white, light blue and blue) is how little it communicates with the asexual and the aromantic flags when I felt that it would make sense that they have something in common. BUTTT then I found this one aroace flag called Bunganvilia aroace flag and I ADORE it. It's not that similar to the ace and aro flags but like it at least has both purple and green AND IT HAS A COOL DRAGON ON IT?? As an aroace I love that flag so much and I wish that itd get more recognition

    2: It was also brought to my attention that the reason theyre so different is cause the aroace experience is different than the alloace/aroallo experience which is also good symbolism. Again, I didn't mean to insult this flag at all but I understand how this comment could have been read like that.

(also dinos are really hard to draw) but I have ideas for some other flags. Maybe leaves or a tree as a symbol on the traditional flag, to show that we as a community (everyone LGBTQIAPN+) are always growing and changing, that's what the + is for after all, showing that the lgbt alphabet doesn't end there and that it's always getting longer with the discovery of new identities that were always there but never had something to describe them before. An art piece I really wanted to make for a while now at school for pride month was a GIANT tree, and each leaf would have a different pride flag on it. I would need so much help to get this done, and especially even to just get permission to put this on a wall. i think dropping the horizontal symmetry for the dragons would be unironically WAY better, since the mirroring isn't exactly conveying any new meaning into the flags. there is a clear cut reason for why the trans flag is the way it is, including the symmetry. applying that same type of symmetry to other flags that (as far as i'm aware) do not share that same concept or similar concepts just feels... kinda just for aesthetic purposes? and if the purposes are purely aesthetic, dropping the symmetry would still be preferred for something more streamlined and easy to remember. even if they're symmetrical, remembering the order of two sets of mirrored colors is a really difficult task for some (i've seen people who can't even remember the order of the trans flag colors).

  • @dutssz
    @dutssz ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't comment about in the first bc I didn't know there would be a second, but about the original genderfluid flag, I like how in many of the flags the white stripe "means" a division/union of concepts, like, if you could read the flags like you can a paper the white would be some sort of & (Lesbian flag reading like woman & woman, Trans flag reading mtf & ftm, etc.)
    So if you see the genderfluid flag it also has a division, in fact actually, two divisions, the pink & the puple, and the purple & the blue. This second one is divided by a black stripe instead, being the oposite of white, and considering that the entire colors follow a gradient of lightest at the pink darkest at the blue, it gives this feeling of a blur in the divisions, as if they don't mark two distinct concepts but of a concept that can move from one side to the other to the other, like a fluid.
    I do agree it can become an eyesore, because a color followed by the whitest white followed by a color followed by the blackest black followed by yet another color is clashing at every point, in my attempts of making it easier I settled in changing the white into a shade that is just in between the pink and purple, and the black into a shade in between the purple and blue, so there's not so much contrast between every stripe
    It ends up leaving the black as a much lighter grey, since the blue is not that dark, but you can always shift the blue darker to also darken that stripe

    One point that always kinda bothers me is when a colour is hard to name and therefore to match in e.g. a bracelet. For example the middle stripe of the omni flag: is it blue? Is ist purple? Is it black? And no matter what it exactly is, it's unlikely that I have this exact colour.

    I'm not a fan of the 5 stripe Ace flag. As stated before, the colors have symbolism and meaning and the flag was decided upon by the Ace community from a design contest on AVEN. Adding another random color for aesthetics does not seem to be in the spirit of thoughtful flag design.
    Edit: Also, I haven't seen this pointed out in this comment section yet so- Be mindful of the arrangement of the Genderfluid stripes. In the more simplified designs, putting the Pink, Purple, and Blue together is very similar to the Bi flag. Keeping in mind that one is a sexuality and one is a gender flag, the design language seems a little muddy there.

    My 2 cents are the purple and green of the genderqueer flag need more contrast when they're next to each other. I think they're too similar in value so your eyes kind of blend them together and muddy them. Perhaps following with the agender, nonbinary, and genderfluid flags you could put either the purple or the green in the center surrounded by white with the other color on the top and bottom?
    Also I know it would break the lateral symmetry of the genderfluid flag, but one idea to reduce the number of stripes would be to have one pink stripe on the top and one blue stripe on the bottom (or vice versa) so you don't have both on either side of the white and purple center stripes.

    On the genderfluid flag, what about:
    White
    Pink
    Purple
    Blue
    Black?
    It keeps it to the 5 stripes, it keeps the purple in the middle, keeps the pink->purple->blue color order. And while its not symetrical, it does have a nice balance imo and keeps it in the conversation with the other gender flags

    I am seriously digging the 7 striped non binary flag, and the colored middle stripe cohesion in all the different non binary flags

    The genderfluid flag with the white as a chevron/symbol looks waaaaay better. I love it.

      I agree -- of any of the changes we've suggested for the genderfluid flag, that was the one that felt the most "aesthetic."
      It does, however, start changing flag meaning? The white was supposed to be a mirror to the black just like the pink was supposed to be a mirror to the blue in the original (and the purple representing that merge in the middle) So the order of the stripes *is* important to the original design -- the pink and blue were intended to be in the same place on opposite sides of the middle stripe, just like the black and white. That doesn't mean we can't scrap it (I wouldn't mind, personally, and I'm genderfluid) but that it's worth taking that into account in the conversation?
      I think possibly going back to pink and blue on one side of the purple, white and black on the other side of the purple could work. Instead of pink mirroring blue and white mirroring black, we have "femininity and masculinity" looking across the purple blend at "all genders and no gender?" (Or, to use an alternative meaning for white and black, "gender euphoria and dysphoria") It doesn't fit in conversation with the other trans flags... but then again, genderfluid isn't a solely trans identity. For many people it includes their cisgender identity as well, so maybe we're always going to be a little bit weird lol.

    Ajwiewiehfhdjdj this is the coolest I love what you did with the ace and aro flags!! And the dragons are the best they make me grin for some reason😅I’m not sure abt other communities but I do remember that the hydra is just an accepted symbol by the omnis so replacing the dragon with that would be the coolest!! I’ve already seen a few Omni hydra designs but never one on the flag
    Also really small nitpick but I personally use the genderqueer flag with the less vibrant colors cause it looks nicer together but I’m obsessed with what you did with the genderqueer flags it’s so so cool aaaaaaaa

    I'm not a fan of color matching the flags (ex: choosing the same purple for a bunch), cause color theory just means some of them will look wildly different and weird when next to certain colors

    i just wanna point out that when the different flags blow in the wind the stripes supposedly become wavy
    and i don't know how that would work with the last genderfluid redesign (the wavy one)
    but the thing is that often times when the flags are presented they are not blowing in said wind since they are often hanged on walls or seen as flat on a screen
    i just though that whole thing about the straight stripes was worth to consider
    anyways hope more of the people who watched the first video will watch this one since it's a great ad on

    There is also an aroace flag. The, as far as I can tell, accepted one currently is colored like a sunset over the ocean. With orange stripes on top and blue on the bottom separated by a white stripe. Though there is a version I prefer which uses the Aro stripes on top and the ase stripes on the bottom, specifically the 5 stripe version though a 6 stripe version I think also works well enough
