    not much difference to speak of. if you just listen and not watch its hard to tell the difference honestly. Some people like a bigger body or jazz look of a 335. some want the rocker look. I think clean is where you want the 335 for that more jazzier sound.. Overdirving thru an amp - gives any guitar the same sound - the sound of that amp and whatever effects. Pickup volume will vary of course, as not all guitars have the same impedence. Good video !

      fully agree with that... but.. take the same exact guitar and put the same brand and same style of pickup in it and it could sound totally different depending upon the alignment of the moon in jupiter's magnetosphere and who knows what. or take two identical guitars off the wall at guitar center that were made 4 weeks apart, and they could sound (and play) totally different. so given that..... i really can't say one sounds better or different than the other, and without watching the video, i really have no idea which one is which, and not enough to justify buying a semi hollow over a solid. i like this guys videos but, i can never hear significant enough differences to say "OMG THATS HUGELY DIFFERENT!" in fact, i'm not watching it at all, i'm typing, and every time i THINK it's lucille, it's not... lol and for what that's worth too, bb king's lucille sounds nothing like that. so... you know... th-cam.com/video/j2OXNThMj7s/w-d-xo.html skip to 2:54 to see the real thing in action (or one of several that he owned over the years)

    My experience is hollow bodies sound cool at home and in the studio, but out on the gig the solid body finds more of a distinctive space with clarity in the mix, and is less likely to get buried in the mix. It's just a bit more treble and midrange and less bass that sits in the mix a little better. That said, I now actually have a Lucille, from a neighbor who traded it to me for a guitar I had that he wanted, and the Lucille is a really nice guitar to have in my collection.

    • @kellygreenii
      @kellygreenii ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it has more to do with what kind of music you’re playing, and what kind of instruments you have playing around you.
      A semi-hollow won’t get lost in the mix if you’re playin in a jazz or blues context because the mid-range isn’t so crowded. Give a little amplification or overdrive and you’re good.
      But once you step into rock, and volume and gain get turned up? The mid range starts to get crowded, and the guitars need more sustain and more treble to be heard. Which is why solid-bodies took over. They simply perform better in that environment.

    I also own an Epiphone Lucille as well as an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra. They have the same 57 classic alnico in the neck but the Paul has a classic plus in the bridge. The Ultra is also chambered so it has some open cavities inside that makes it lighter and more airy sounding. They do sound similar, same volume, same power. But the Lucille goes an extra step towards hollow body territory with a deeper richer tone, especially in the neck and middle positions. That’s what I hear in your comparison as well!

The 335 just a bit more mellow, perfect for blues, and the Les Paul a bit more ballsy for hard rock, although either could do both imo. I went in between the Les Paul and the 335 models and settled for the Epiphone ES-339 (sort of smaller bodied 335) and I'm pleased with it. My 339 has the Alnico Classic pups fitted (with coil tap) which I'm assuming is what is probably fitted to both the Epiphone Les Paul and the 335 'Lucille' you are demo-ing here. Good pickups imo. Thanks again Darrell for a great comparison demo.

    Another great video Darrell. The more I watch your content the more I'm starting to think I don't need the three thousand dollar version of any guitar. You convinced me to go with PRS SE snd now I'm seeing I could be happy with an Epiphone if I was going to go after a Gibson. Keep up the good work.

      Soundwise anyway. I seriously considered a $500 Epi when I bought my $2k Gibby, but the cheap looking veneer top and crooked volume knobs just didn't cut it for me. Wasn't a bad sounding guitar. Add distortion and no one would probably ever know the difference, but clean, the Gibby sounded much better to me played back to back.
      That was 2015. Perhaps Epi's QA and components have improved. Those you have there look pretty nice...particularly Lucille.
      BTW, another well done video.

      +saddlebag Yeah, the Lucille model appears to be well made compared to some Epi models. It is quite a bit more expensive than a basic dot 335 though.

    Tones are so subtly different that to me it reinforces that in electric guitars electronics are 90%+ of the tone. Everything else is aesthetics and emotions.

    Scary how close they are. Its funny... Some recordings, you can say - I hear a hollow body there... I'm guessing there are tonal preferences - amp, effects, clean/dirty that hollow body players prefer and other tone setups that LP players prefer.

    I've often heard people say Epi pick-ups are muddy but they were crystal clear, sounded great on both guitars. Gotta say, the flame-top on that Lester is stunning. Shame it's only a thin veneer but still looks gorgeous. I don't even want to think about how much Gibson would charge for that finish! lol

    Hey dude, I've no idea if you or anyone else are familiar with these guitars but I need an opinion if you are: the Revelation RLP Blues Line (les paul copy) and the Rally Neo (neosound?) which is a 335 copy.
    Basically someone wants to swap both of those for my Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy Plus EX which is completely functional but does have a nasty crack along the underside of the neck going accross where the nut is. Good deal, bad deal??

    I watched it twice and the Les Paul to me for La Villa had an incredible raw sound where Lucille sounded like the sustain pedal on the piano was held down the whole time, other than that I liked Lucille better for everything else - just my opinion I can't wait to see what other people say.

  • @Shred_The_Weapon

    Back in the 90s and early 2000s, I wondered why anyone would want that version of Lucille without f-holes. Even watching her being played by a local Hudson Valley blues legend, Slam Allen, didn’t wake me up. It was when I realized that she was like John Lennon’s Rickenbacker 325 and Brian May’s Red Special (all of them are thinline but without sound holes) that I got the point. She can sing/fly with the best of them just with the hollow wings.
    Still like me some f-holes though.

  • @john564holloway

    Well, you got me on this Darrell. Geez, this was tough. If given a choice, I'd pick the Lucille due to never having own a 335. Trying to not let favoritism get in the way, I'd say the LP is a smidgen warmer than the hollow body. I'd have to see the frequencies on your computer.

  • @jamesmandolin

    Thank for making this video cuz I plan to buy the semi-hollow. I feel the difference tone in both but it’s too small point no need to keep 2 model of them. In term of the body, semi-hollow is so beautiful if my budget is not tight, I definitely buy another one.

  • @ptalbany
    @ptalbany 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They both sound great, I think the hollow body allows the guitar to resonate more. But with that said the Les Paul has a lot more sustain due to the solid body
    So with all this I'd leave my choice to the looks of the guitar and the Les Paul has it hands down the only thing that drew me to the Lucille was the switch on it for different tones but even with that for me it'd be the Les Paul

    Solid body has more clarity. Especially when playing distorted that’s important. Semi hollows can get a bit lost in high gain stuff at times. But they both have their own flavor. Whatever you like is what’s best. Solid for me.
