While insects and Fungi share some traits, they are indeed very distinct. In other words, he was wrong.
He is probably referring to the fact that mushrooms contain chitin which is a protein that is also found in the exoskeleton of insects. He is trying to tie the two unrelated things together, but is using alternative facts

The "Tavern Cut Thin Crust" Actually PRE-DATES the "Deep Dish" In Chicago. It's a round pie with "tavern" or "Chicago" cut..where the pie is cut in a cris-cross pattern leaving mostly square pieces...the first thin crust was served in 1909 in Chicago. The first Deep-Dish was served in 1943.

I'm a native Detroiter and an adopted Chicagoan and I can definitely say that the pizzas in the video represent the distinctive styles of neither city. Detroit style--aka "pan pizza"--uses a cast iron pan that keeps the dough thick and fluffy inside while caramelizing the outside and allowing the cheese to be spread all the way to the edge. Chicago style--aka "deep dish"--well, suffices to say that the pizza in the video bears no resemblance and has nothing connecting it to Chicago. Try again.

despite having a psychology with biology degree....i totally googled this!
The mushrooms that they are eating is from the "Agaricales" fungal order, which has nothing to do with insects. The only thing that I can find that is even close is that some mushrooms are classified as "Incertae sedis," which seem to be just a catch-all term, used for a taxonomic group where its broader relationships are unknown or undefined (I may be wrong, I am not a Biologist, but that was what I gathered from reading about it. If someone with more knowledge in Biology can chime in, that'd be great). "Incertae" kind of looks like the word "Insect" and I guess some insects could possibly be defined as an "Incertae sedis,"if my understanding of that term is correct.

I am a U.S. born and bred 62 year old male. I have traveled widely. And, I have never seen any of the pizzas shown in this video. The Chicago one, especially, doesn't seem like any pizza that I have eaten in Chicago.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING!!.......the earliest record of ANYTHING that resembles "pizza" was in 1876 when a Dutch immigrant in New York who was penniless and trying to feed his children slapped together a meal of all what he had left in his ghetto apartment....it was some bread; tomato sauce; some salami (from the Italian market down the street}; and some cheese. He spread the sauce on the bread slices, sliced the cheese and spread that too, then covered it with slices of REAL Italian salami!! Baked it in an oven and fed his kids. They LOVED it!!! So, he made it several times as an "occasion" food. Well, the word and chitter-chatter in the tenement building and on the street went about this man's concoction and how good it tasted. Then after a couple years, the local Italian immigrants started selling "pizza pies" as food from their corner bakeries. eventually. peppers were added and then the idea of "pepperoni", or hot salami as it was originally called was added and today.....we have "authentic" Italian pizza invented by a poor starving Dutchman that nobody thought to record his name.
And that's the way MOST great recipes get invented....nobody remembers who thought it up.

As a man who grew up near Chicago, whose first job was making pizza, who has spent enough time in New York to say he lived there, and who currently lives in California... This video is "Irish people try pizzas that are available in Ireland, and have names inspired by places in America." I don't blame them for it, but to say those pizzas were "NY style," "Chicago style," or "California style" pizzas is so plainly incorrect that it just seems like a typographical error.

From the daughter of a Manhattan boy with 4 older brothers (youngest of 5 and he is almost 62) who took me and my two brothers and mom (when she could break from work) to NY almost 12-13 times a year when his mother was still living back until when I was about 8 or 9 (she died shortly after I turned 8 in 1998). Then the trips lessened to about 5-6 times a year as all of his brothers are in different states (most where each type of these pizzas are from)! I can HONESTLY tell you that NONE OF THOSE were authentic ESPECIALLY the NY PIZZA! (By the way, this is coming from a girl born and raised in Maryland and that grew up around DC most of her life where we have no "authentic" local pizza! LOL! UGH! *FACE PALMS!!!*
I live in New York., pizza is like a food staple for me. I think my diet would be incomplete without it.
Hey I was born in Southern Illinois and learned to love Windy City style pizza in the 70's. Walt's Pizza in Marion IL is heaven on a plate to me.
