07. Sicario A- 9/10
06. Blade Runner 2049 A 9/10
05. Indecencies A 9/10
04. Dune A+ 9/10
03. Arrival S 10/10
02. Prisoners S 10/10
01. Dune part 2 S 10/10
The fact that you Arrival so low goes to show how amazing of a filmmaker Villeneuve is. Personally, it’s my number one favorite of his films and one I consider to be a masterpiece of the sci fi genre.
I totally agree. If you like reading I recommend Stories of your life. Story comes from that book
@@seth6532stories of your life is amazing
Yes, Same. Arrival, Prisoners and then the rest. Maybe after watching Incendies and Polytechnique the list might change.
You REALLY have to be into SciFi for Arrival imo. It didnt hold my attention at all. Im very aware that says something about me but Im just not really a SciFi guy
do you still think it’s his best after dune 2?
Right now, I think Dune: Part Two is second only to Blade Runner 2049 (which is my favorite sci-fi movie ever), but this could change any day. I love Denis so much. He’s a filmmaker who means so much to me, and he’s my favorite filmmaker period.
Same.
1. BR2049
2. DuneP2
Love BLade Runner 2049 but plot was a mess, and Harrison Ford was just picking up a big paycheck.
I agree - Blade Runner 2049 is just perfection. I immerse myself in the world he has created. It transports my more than any of his other films, as consistently excellent as they are.
Same I love Denis films too
Strongly recommend Incendies and Polytechnique. Those 2 films are devastating, in my opinion. Villeneuve doesn't need any of Hollywood's polish to deliver a visceral experience.
I live in montreal and they make us watch those two movies at school. At least 10 years ago
Wait what, a list without Incendies 🫠
I saw Incendies for the first time a few months ago. Wow. That movie wrecked my emotions. Fantastic.
Prisoners is an all time movie for me
top 10 for me
Not quite for me but its really underrated. How Jackman didn't get an Oscar nom for that is criminal to me.
it’s his best movie for me
I understand why Sicario is low on a lot of people's lists but it's my personal favorite. Most directors would die to have one scene as intense as 3 or 4 scenes from Sicario. It doesn't have the huge scope a lot of Villenueve's other films have but that's why it stands out to me. It feels more like a documentary at times.
Sicario was considered one of the best movies that year and yet many would say it's Denis "worst" movie... dude 😂 Just shows how this man portfolio is IMMACULATE!!
@@SumtingWong343It's pretty much always shafted when people make their rankings
I agree, I was just thinking about this after watching Dune part two a couple hours ago and that Sicario is just a movie that exceeds everything it should be, it goes beyond the average grounded gritty realistic gang war movies and just makes things such as wide shots of cars entering the city or whatever hit way more than planets exploding etc etc. Roger Deakins is the best cinematographer alive imo, a movie so grounded and so unfavored by it's locations and surroundings shouldn't look that good.
@@ericgarcia3640I think it’s decent but it’s shafted because it’s not as good as the other amazing films he’s made not to say it’s bad at all just not as good
@@raidersofsteak2227 I mean, it's his highest rated movie on metacritic.
I love how all the top comments are saying “______ is actually my favorite” and it’s 4-5 different movies mentioned. denis is so special
It's extremely rare a film has the emotional impact that Arrival had on me. Idk if it's because I wasn't expecting it to be that kind of film but man that film absolutely gutted me but in such a beautiful way. It's impossible to describe but Arrival is absolutely breathtaking
I was crying in the cinema. My all time favourite film.
I understand what you mean, Dune part one was like that for me. It was just such a beautiful movie, which forced me to see dune part 2 the day of release, which I also loved (just not quite to the emotional impact of dune part 1).
Here’s my top 5:
5. Arrival 8.5/10
4. Dune 9/10
3. Blade Runner 2049 9.5/10
2. Dune Part II 9.5/10
1. Prisoners 9.5/10
I know I’ve seen Sicario but it’s been too long 😂😅 Villeneuve is certainly becoming a favorite director of mine 🔥
Blade Runner 2049 is my second favorite movie of all time.
What’s your number one my dude 🔥
Yeah fr what could possibly be put over BR1049
Denis is my favorite director working today. My list is:
1. Blade Runner 2049
2. Dune Part Two
3. Prisoners
4. Dune
5. Arrival
6. Sicario
7. Incendies
8. Enemy
Thanks for showing prisoners some love ! Man what a movie !
@@tommyancharuk9941 it’s one of my all time favorites for sure. The fact it’s in third place is a testament to how good Denis’s filmography is
@@thunder2053 for sure i get why you put blade runner at number 1, but in my opinion the story of prisoners is soo much better …
Watching Blade Runner 2049 in theaters last year took it to another level for me. I honestly think it's one of the best movies ever made. I'd have it #1 with Sicario and the 2 Dune movies right behind it.
Saw it in imax when it first released and the last 30 minutes kicked my ass!
Arrival is my favorite of his. It's phenomenal to me
Sicario will always be one of my favourite films, so unique, different kind of movie experience
Denis Villeneuve is one of those filmmakers where every time he released a new movie, you can point out that new release is his best work and it could be correct for that 🙌
Oh wow seeing dune 2 Friday but right now arrival would be my number 1
1.Blade Runner 2049
2.Dune part two
3.Sicario
4.Dune
5.Prisoners
6.Arrival
This is one of my favorite videos of your's Sean! Villeneuve is already one of my favorite directors
I love how self aware you are. Its easily to look at a more "artistic" film and say "its boring" but you take the time appreciate those films, even if you dont personally get anything from them

1. Blade Runner 2049
2. Dune: Part Two
3. Prisoners
4. Dune
5. Arrival
6. Sicario
7. Enemy
Haven't seen the earlier ones, but will get around to them at some point
Yup Dune 2 is on your number one and I completely agree.
Denis is truly one of my favorite directors ever. I discovered him when Arrival came out. I saw Sicario soon after and was anxiously waiting to see what he'd do with BR 2049. I've only seen Those 3 and both Dune films, and He's already solidified himself as one of the best to ever touch the Sci-fi genre.
1. Dune pt.2
2. Blade Runner 2049
3. Dune pt.1
4. Sicario
5. Arrival
Sean. You need to watch Incendies ASAP!
I had never heard of Denis Villeneuve and I randomly streamed Prisoners randomly one night. Knew immediately that I had to see if he had any other films. Top 3 favorite director ever since.
great list here's mine
1. dune part two 10/10
2. blade runner 2049 10/10
3. prisoners 10/10
4. arrival 10/10
5. dune 2021 10/10
6. sicario 10/10
7. incendies 9.5/10
8. enemy 8.0/10
have not seen poly technique but want to
I was going to see Dune: Part II this past weekend but I got six inches of snow, so didn’t happen.
1. Arrival (A-)
2. Dune (B)
Great commentary as always Sean! Dune 2 has cemented Denis as my favorite director, every movie I’ve seen of his is one of my favorites so it’s hard to rank but here goes:
5. Arrival (9/10) - unique thriller that is a fascinating dive into linguistics, only issue is the actual learning was skipped over heavily in the middle but otherwise brilliant
(The rest are 10/10 in my eyes)
4. Blade Runner 2049- captures the atmosphere of the original perfectly, Gosling is compelling and so tragic. My only gripe is it’s just very depressing but it’s an all time best scifi film
3. Dune- love the worldbuilding, characters, audio and visuals are mindblowing and a perfect adaptation of Herbert’s novel
2. Sicario - nail biting all the way, grounded and brutal and man that dinner scene is jawdropping. The horror is that this seems like something that the government could be doing right now, and seeing Blunt unravel what’s really happening is so thrilling
1. Dune part two- everything I said about Dune but turned up to 11 with some fantastic payoffs. This was the best theater experience I’ve had, the atmosphere (especially on Geidi prime) was so gripping, the dark turn in the story is a believable and horrifying tale of fanatical leaders while still giving such a satisfying conclusion
8. Dune 1
7. Sicario
6. Arrival
5. Enemy
4. Dune 2
3. Incendies
2. Prisoners
1. Blade runner 2049
😊
I’d urge anyone reading this to see ‘Incendies’ by Villeneuve which I think is often overlooked and a glaring omission from this video/list
I hated Sicario the first time I watched it. Now it’s one of my favorite movies of the crime genre. It’s BBRRUTAL!
Yep
Totally
I can see you saying “brutal” like Gurney from Dune
1- Blade Runner 2049
2- Arrival
3- Prisoners
4- Enemy
5- Sicario
6- Dune2
7- Dune
I just love this director. My top 4 directors of all time with only top 1 is Quentin Tarantino.
1- Villeniu 2- Scorsese 3- Nolan.
I've seen 3 of these movies Arrival, Dune, Dune Part 2.
3rd: Arrival- I remember seeing this movie, but that's it. I need to see this movie again.
2nd: Dune- An interesting world building movie that I love.
1st: Dune Part 2- A flat out fantastic movie that is or will be part of my number one favorite movie for this year.
Denis is the man. So many good movies. If he is announced as the director of a movie, I’m seeing it
7. Enemy (Haven't seen it)
6. Arrival
5. Sicario
4. Dune Part One
3. Prisoners
2. Blade Runner 2049
1. Dune Part Two
What's crazy is, not counting Enemy since I haven't seen it, but the "worst 😂" movie on this list is still freaking amazing!!! Prisoners is like neck and neck with Blade Runner 2049. Those two are absolutely sensational. We don't even talk about Sicario, that movie is bonkers good.
Dune Part One is fabulous too. Denis Vellenuve just happened to make Dune Part Two and should now be in the conversation with the greatest Science Fiction films ever made. And it's better than Blade Runner 2049 which I think is a masterpiece of the genre too.
Denis Vellenuve is a master of the art... and my favorite director.
Watched prisoners when I was 11 a year after it came out and made me fall in love with movies
Same here got to see it in theaters with my mom thinking it was a run of the mill thriller not realizing how deep it is. Every time I watch it it’s like putting the puzzle together again, it has made it to my top 5. Also that Roger deakins is beautiful.
Havent seen enemy and prisoners but heres my ranking for now.
5. Blade Runner 2049
4. Arrival
3. Sacario
2. Dune
1. Dune part 2
Arrival is my favorite film of all time. The story telling, the visuals, the mind bending twist and incredible cast, it’s all just perfect.
Great list.
Damn, incendies is his best imo, wish it was on this list. Also his name is duh knee vil nuhv btw lol
1. Prisoners
2. Dune: Part Two
3. Sicario
4. Arrival
5. Dune
(Haven’t watched Blade Runner 2049 yet)
1. Dune Pt.2
2. Incendies
3. Prisoners
4. Arrival
5. Sicario
6. Blade Runner 2049
7. Dune
8. Enemy
I want to see Maelstrom and Polytechnic here soon. But Villeneuve is a master and Dune Pt.2 is a marvel.
My ranking (from the ones I’ve seen):
1. Dune Part 2
2. Arrival
3. Prisoners
4. Dune Part 1
5. Blade Runner 2049 (need to rewatch)
6. Enemy
Great list! Denis is my second favorite director of all time (behind Nolan), so it was awesome to hear your thoughts on his movies! I haven't seen Enemy yet, but my list goes:
1. Arrival
2. Dune Part 2
3. Prisoners
4. Dune Part 1
5. Sicario
6. Blade Runner 2049
Cool video Sean 😎 would you do a Ridley Scott Ranking with the next Gladiator coming ?
Yes
Dune Part 2 came the closest, but nothing has yet dethroned Arrival for me. That one is a Top Ten all timer.
My Rankings
1. Dune Part Two (10/10)
2. Blade Runner 2049 (9.5/10)
3. Arrival (9.5/10)
4. Sicario (9/10)
5. Dune (8.5/10)
6. Prisoners (8/10)
7. Incendies (7.5/10)
Havent seen enemy yet but all of these were top tier movies and Denis Villinueve is one of my favorite directors!
Arrival is still my favorite!
Sean I get not having his pre Hollywood independent films on the list but you NEED to watch Incendies!!!! It is another incredible outing from him!
I actually predicted this ranking from you Sean based on what you love about film. I personally put Blade Runner 2049 as his best, closely followed by Arrival and then both Dune films. When I rewatch Dune 2 I'll be able to say for sure if I like it more than the first, I think I do, but just gotta clarify.
Hey sean i really love your videos so much and , i really recommend you and austin to watch the 'YODHA' movie coming up this month its trailer look great you shall check it out when its released
Hey Sean, have you seen the Green Mile?
Hey Sean do you have Letterboxd? I’d be interested in seeing what you’ve been watching.
When are you going to do your top 100 movie list? I’ve been following and watching for years. I’ve been waiting for a video like that.
I did my top 40 for my 40th birthday a couple years ago
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout I truly enjoyed that video! Have you thought about doing another? An update or more?
Also, you are awesome! I find your life story to be a true blessing. Your testimony to help those who are lost. I teach the children at my church in Cape Girardeau, MO. I pray that our lives meet up together at some point.
If I had to rank Villeneuve's work, it'd be as follows:
#7. Enemy
#6. Prisoners
#5. Dune
#4. Arrival
#3. Dune: Part Two
#2. Sicario
#1. Blade Runner 2049
2049 is *a masterpiece*. The first time I saw it I walked away with tears in my eyes. Beautiful, thought-provoking, flawless. The original Blade Runner is my favorite film of all time, so the fact that Villeneuve was able to make a fitting and meaningful sequel to something that never needed one is a testament to the genius of his craft.
For me I’d go
1) Dune part 2
2) Blade Runner 2049
3) Dune
4) Arrival
Haven’t watched the rest yet
Watching Part Two in a couple hours:
1. Prisoners
2. Blade Runner 2049
3. Sicario
4. Enemy
5. Arrival
6. Dune
Prisoners will always be one of the most disturbing and fantastic films I’ve ever seen.
Yup yup 🤝
One of my top 5 directors. Banger after banger, he dont miss
He’s so amazing visually
Sean if you haven’t already, you must watch Incendies. Arguably his best film. It’s a haunting masterpiece
Havent seen dune 2 yet but I think that Sicario is my favourite of his. As you point out though, they are all pretty darn good.
Hate it when INCENDIES is left off these lists!!! But, appreciate yr updated DV list :)
For me:
(all of which are in my top 100 btw)
7- Arrival
6- Prisoners
5- Incendies
4- Sicario
3- Blade Runner 2049
2- Dune Pt 2 (this may change)
1- Dune Pt 1
9. Maelstrom
8. Enemy
7. Incendies
6. Prisoners
5. Sicario
4. Dune part 1
3. Dune part 2
2. Blade runner 2049
1. Arrival
I just realized that I've seen all his movies except, prisoner. Some of these movies, i was not aware he was the director. Like 32 août sur terre and Polytechnic. But i knew for the rest.
The guy is so good that you can rank them in any order and it’s not wrong
I was looking to see if Polytechnique was on here and then I saw this is just his Hollywood films. Polytechnique was my favorite film the year it came out. I think it’s on Tubi now and worth a watch. It’s only 70 some min, so it moves fast.
Good video Sean. Villeneuve is a massive inspiration for me and him and Nolan are the best directors in terms of mainstream Hollywood film making. Would love to see him do a Star Wars, but very unlikely he would do because of the way Lucasfilm and Disney are run at the moment unfortunately 😢
Please do director ranking videos on directors like

Hidden Gem Film-Makers to watch out for
Just a suggestion
I haven't seen Dune Part 2, Sicario, or Enemy, but I would find it to be a near impossible task to rank The Arrival, Prisoners, and Blade Runner 2049 as they are all 10 out of 10 masterpieces and are easily among the best movies I've ever seen.
In regards to Dune Part 1, I thought it was good, but not on par with this previous movies and I found it very difficult to like any of the characters outside of Jessica and Duncan. But it's entirely possible that Dune Part 2 could make me change my mind once I'm able to put the complete story in perspective. I'm really looking forward to seeing it!
7. Enemy-While there’s plenty of well done technical elements of this film, this isn’t a form of storytelling that I connect with much, which doesn’t make for a satisfying experience for me
6. Arrival-A rock solid sci-fi film that takes heady ideas about how language functions and packages them in profound themes of human emotion to make for intelligent sci-fi that Villeneuve is great at delivering
5. Sicario-A tightly paced thriller that focuses more on the smaller details of the plot and great performances from great actors instead of quick pacing and action sequences to make for a satisfying addition to Villeneuve’s great filmography
4. Prisoners-A fantastically well acted, directed, and written film that uses child abduction as a mechanism to explore the concept of ordinary people having the ability to become monsters that’ll stop at nothing to achieve their goal
3. Dune: Part One-A fantastic introduction to this world that treats its audience with its political intrigue, large scale world building, and technical achievements, making for a movie I absolutely love and keep being drawn back towards
2. Dune: Part Two-An epic second half to this great story that has beats of a hero’s journey while challenging its audience at the same time, all with excellent performances, expansive world building, and complex character dynamics from beginning to end
1. Blade Runner 2049-Despite not being a big fan of the original Blade Runner, that doesn’t stop this movie from being an incredibly powerful exploration of what it means to be human, identity, and the nature of reality with great characters, a compelling story, and breathtaking visuals tying those themes together, which all makes for an absolutely phenomenal piece of science fiction
I loove Blade Runner 2049. However the original is better. The score from Vangelis alone completely destorys 2049. I also think the dialogue and visuals are a lot more iconic in the original Blade Runner as well. IMO of course. :)
Love the list man!
Hey Sean…do I work on your wavelength?
Of the ones I've seen
1. BR2049
2. Dune Part 2
3. Arrival
4. Dune Part 1
5. Prisoners
6. Incendies
7. Enemy
8. Polytechnique
9. Sicario
BLADE RUNNER 2049 STILL NUMBER 1
Enemy is actually one of his French-Canadian films, it just happens to have a Hollywood star in it.
Hi sean
5. Sicario (B)
4. Arrival (B+)
3. Dune (A-)
2. Blade Runner 2049 (A-)
1. Dune: Part 2 (A)
I have seen Prisoners but not recently enough to rank. Planning to watch all of the movies not currently on the list.
Sean, please watch Incendies. It’s my favorite Villeneuve film.

1. Arrival
Still working on his filmography, so I have only seen four of his movies right now: Dune, Dune part 2, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival. I would give Dune and Balde Runner 2049 7/10, great movies just not quite for me. Dune Part 2 I'd give an 8/10, a movie that I didn't love but completely understand why it is getting the praise it is. Finally I give Arrival a perfect 10, a top ten movie for me.
9: Polytechnique
8: Incendies
7: Enemy
6: Prisoners
5: Dune
4: Blade Runner 2049
3: Sicario
2: Dune Part 2
1: Arrival
This is a tough ranking because as you said they can shift every week since they’re all amazing.
As of right now my ranking would be:
1. Blade Dunner 2049 10/10
2. Dune Part Two 10/10
3. Dune 10/10
4. Prisoners 10/10
5. Sicario 9/10
6. Arrival 8.5/10
7. Enemy 7/10
Lots of 10’s.
I’ve only seen five of his movies, and here’s my ranking:
5 Sicario
4 Enemy
3 Dune Part 1
2 Arrival
1 Prisoners
1. Dune is amazing.
2. Prisoners is so underrated and one of the best dramas made in the last 20 years.
3. Dune 2 is getting a little too much hype but it's a really good movie even if I disagree with some changes from the book.
4. Blade Runner 2049 drags at times, but it was still really good.
5. Sicario was a good one-time watch.
6. Arrival was decent but nothing that I would rewatch.
I haven't watched his other movies.
1. Prisoners
2. Arrival
3. Blade Runner 2049
4. Sicario
5. Dune
6. Enemy
still need to check out the rest
1. Arrival
2. Blade Runner 2049
3. Prisoners
4. Dune part 2
5. Dune part 1
6. Incendies
7. Sicario

Seeing Dune Part 2 tmr
Incendies is a gut punch, with a scene that gives us the most visceral shocking GASP in movie history.
I've seen 5 of his films. Watching his other 2 American films this week for a full video ranking if anyone is interested. Here is the ranking I have so far
#5: Enemy.
Overhated for sure. I really enjoyed it. But it can be frustrating.
#4 Dune:
Great stuff in here but the pacing and action was off for me
#3: Arrival
Interesting but not 100 for me, but that ending had me sobbing
#2: Sicario
Awesome movie, it's disturbing and perfect
