I would had loved to read one of those books John talked about but I have to be real with everyone... I have never seen those books before and didn't know they even existed until a few months ago... and I'm in college now. I don't think I ever saw any of these books in my book fairs as I grew up and I would typically try and find a quick and easy book to buy from them. My schools as I grew up didn't have these either, nor any of the teachers. Its not exactly a Dr Sues popular book. In fact, I learned of many other books besides these in my library. I'd be dumb founded to even go to my local library and find one of those in their archives and (lastly) its not something Barns and Nobel or other book stores put out front for kids... But I do want more people to read these if they are as good as John says.
Gumball is basically a Wayside adaptation done right. It handles a large cast of characters while still focusing on Gumball and Darwin. (Edit:Wow. Thx for the likes)
Todd's actually the main reason I love the show. He's literally the perfect character in my perspective. He goes to a school where he has to scale thirty floors each day and then scale them again at noon because he's sent home early. However, that doesn't stop him from working EXTREMELY hard to be the best student he possibly can be. In one episode he did all his homework until graduation just to keep Mrs. Jewls from leaving Wayside. In another he was principal for a day and made many drastic improvements to the entire building while not once stopping to worry about his own personal benefits. Furthermore despite constant abuse from Maurecia, dealing with Myron's idiocy, sitting through Dana's stupid rule analysis, and getting sent home early for doing nothing wrong, he still moves on with a positive attitude! I think making Todd the main character was a great idea because it could motivate small children that they can still be successful through pain and humiliation. I have no idea why they chose Todd either but they portrayed his character really well and I find him truly inspiring. His positive attitude, powerful endurance, and the bravery to face tough challenges daily make him the best student anyone could hope to have and there is no mistake in centering a show on a character like that. QED
True, but Animated Atrocities #14 taught me "It is not noble to take someone else's s**t and abuse" so I really think Todd should have made Mrs. Jewels leave Wayside for sending him home early for no reason. I dunno why she so mean to him. November 15, 2019, 3:53am
Also, Guntherson220 said this: "Here is another reason to not like this show, they basically turned Todd into Stressed Eric... let that sink in for a minute." November 14, 2019, 4:00am
The issue is just that the Show always spits on it. Usually if you have a Charakter like this - you want them to succeed. If the show does not want that, they STILL have to make the Charakter succeed, or see when tropes get boring. Like the whole "Hes always in trouble and always have to go home with the Kindergarden bus" schtick. It gets old. Also the whole "Missunderstandings from adults that make the Child MC miserable" can only go so far - it gets annyoing very quickly.
@@adampkalb That reminds me: Stressed Eric (or Wayside I guess) could work if the underdog (Eric/Todd) always persevered and came out on top. Like the episodes of Spongebob where Squidward wins (eg Band Geeks, and yes, House Fancy). Show endurance, strength. Life can throw all the shit it has at you but you can make it through no matter what.
personally, i liked the simple aesthetic in Total Drama. i don't think it's a style that every show should have, but it was fitting for that one. it's a cartoon making fun of reality tv. it fits to give the characters close to human proportions (i say "close" because the heads don't always seem the right size for the bodies) while keeping it cartoonish in art-style. i think that if it looked more real or anime-like, some of the comedy wouldn't been as funny.
Pirate of Rock Yeah, sometimes it works; really hit and miss. I think some animators just get caught up in thinking that they'll use a style of animation without considering if it fits the show.
Really happy to hear someone talk about Total Drama! Love that series very much, and I'm extremely excited they're FINALLY (seemingly) going to make a new season soon! Can't wait.
Maurecia abusing Todd reminds me of that AWFUL anime cliche where a girl constantly beats up a male protagonist for every little thing and misunderstanding that happens, and yet they are supposed to end up together in the end. I hate that. >:(
SonicStantz I believe Robyn from Anime America calls that cliche “the perceived pervert.” And I agree 100%; the only time I found that funny was with Haruhi’s father in “Ouran High School Host Club”, but every other time I see it used I cringe >.
powerstar 2028 dude, it’s been a thing since Evagelion; tsunderes ain’t a new thing. I think they’re just somehow written in a more annoying way nowadays. Also, My Hero Academia, Overlord, and Yuri!!! On Ice would like a word with you :P (Jk, your opinion, dude)
Those aren't the chords for "Eye of the Tiger"... it really just is a sound-alike. Same rhythm and structure, but a completely different chord progression. ...a really BAD chord progression. It'd be hard to write a decent melody to sing over that.
This comment will probably get buried right now, but I'm going to try to shed some light on "Canadian cartoons" and why they tend to suck. Canada has Canadian Content laws for television broadcasters. Basically, at least 60% of content on any given channel must have Canadian origins or at least some sort of Canadian involvement. Unfortunately, this results in a lot of very low-budget productions making it to air because they don't have to compete with productions from other countries in terms of quality. Now, admittedly, part of the reason CanCon exists is because Canada's population is so small that our entertainment industry just doesn't HAVE the budget to compete with, say, the US and the UK, but when a channel is trying to fill 60% of its slots with Canadian Content you're bound to get plenty of stinkers that only exist to meet the CanCon requirements. This is also why we had knock-off channels like Teletoon, YTV, and Family that showed Disney, Nick, and Cartoon Network shows rather than having those channels air in Canada (although IIRC that's changed lately). That's not to say there's no good CanCon, of course. But Teletoon was particularly notorious for producing crappy CanCon because it was a "cartoons only" channel with no live action. YTV and Family weren't "cartoon-only" channels, and a lot of their actually good shows ended up being live action, like Dark Oracle or Are You Afraid of the Dark, or fun game shows like Uh-Oh. Live action shows had a smaller budget and could often continue longer and be more plot-focused than the animated shows that could be made with the same budget. Teletoon, being animation-only, was (and still is) notorious for producing shows with 13 episode runs and then airing them over and over and over and over again to meet the CanCon requirements. A single 13-episode show could have a primetime slot every weekday night for 3+ YEARS. This was especially true with adult cartoons, which tended to be awful. Look at Crash Canyon and Fugget About It. Unfortunately a lot of our better shows were international productions and whether or not the show was cancelled rested entirely with the international partner. Teletoon LOVED Clone High and wanted to continue the show, but just didn't have the budget after MTV pulled out. Look up "Canadian Content rules" for more context. IIRC these restrictions have been relaxed lately, which has allowed for Canada to finally get channels like Nick and Disney, but it gives a lot of context to Canadian animation pre-2015.
Huh, the Teletoons executives made a terrible adaptation of Mr. Enter's favorite childhood book? I T S B E C A U S E T H E Y *L I K E* Y O U M R E N T E R
I believe how the world treats Todd along with his characterization works. Todd always keeps going despite all the shit thrown at him. He never feels hopeless or miserable, unlike, say, dark-era Squidward. He's always optimistic. That being said, him being picked was pretty questionable as you stated.
It was great. Just the ride amount of crude, without being cringey and, if some characters were mean spirited, they got what they deserved, which felt extremely satisfying. Characters were all distinct and unique. And the characters that were blatant stereotypes were that way intentionaly in order to parody those stereotypes.
I always kinda hated this show because every episode was just about being shitty to todd, who is just a kid and never deserved the pretty awful stuff that happened to him. It would just make me uncomfortable to watch all his "friends" and even his teacher treat him like trash every. single. episode.
Same. I absolutely HATED Mrs. Jewls the most (next to Maurecia) for how she treated Todd. As you said, Todd never even does anything to merit being punished EVERY DAY, he's just trying to adjust to this new type of school and its wacky unorthodox ways, but there's just no room for error with Mrs. Jewls. It's because of her (and Todd's overall treatment throughout the series) that I quit this show after only 3-4 episodes. I can see now after rediscovering the series and watching these reviews about it that I made the right decision back then. (I know this is a SUUUUUUUPER late reply, but I just watched this video and saw this comment)
Ugh...this show was such a disappointment. On it's own, it's just a bland, mediocre mid-2000s cartoon. As an adaptation, it's even worse. I loved the Wayside School books when I was in elementary school. By the time the show started airing on Nick, I was already outgrowing the channel but wanted to give the show a look anyway because hey- it was an adaptation of my favorite books as a kid! And what we got was...a real letdown. I always felt like the series was REALLY easy to adapt to TV form; they took a perfect opportunity and threw it out for unnecessary changes and stock cartoon cliches. Nothing more annoying than wasted potential.
You took the words out of my mouth on that. I'm not the only one around here who hated it & to this very day my opinions haven't changed on this series cause the Flash animation looks outdated to be honest & Todd I show sympathy for.
@@thechuckjosechannel.2702 this series pisses me off on so many levels, i got actually angry hearing enter rip it a new one. like, it's so unfaithful to the book and barely relates to it other than the premise and the stories. how is this supposed to be an adaptation when it's not even faithful to the source material? like at ALL??
I have an idea of how they could have made this cartoon work from a story-telling perspective. It may be strange, but hear me out: 1: Have the main character be Ben/Mark and not Todd. 2: Have the first episode be based on the chapter where Ben/Mark joins Mrs. Jewels' class. 3: Have the second episode be based on the Chapter with Mrs. Gorf, wherein one of Ben/Mark's classmates explains what she was like through flashback. 4: Have every subsequent episode be based on the chapters that followed, with Ben/Mark's classmates explaining what school was like up until he joined. The list goes on.
I have a idea for a special that have Louis as the narrator explaining the various stories around wayside. The first involved the Mrs. Gorf story with the Bryon story cram in the middle to explain why he late. He the one who defeats Gorf by using his mirror.
I remember when my best friend and I were in kindergarten, we used to watch this show a lot, and we actually thought that getting punched by a girl meant that she loved you cuz that's what Mauricia always did to Todd. So one day, we went to the park and tried to get a girl to punch us. I'm never going to forget that memory XD
krspaceT1 i think it was french-Canadian actually, french is the 2nd most spoken language in canada and all of quebec is french-speaking i think. so it may of came from quebec
thinking about it, the way the show could've made the connection between Myon's character from the book and the TV show Myron is this: basically keep all the back story about how he lost his class presidency, and have THAT be the reason he's become a selfish lazy brat. "I lost my presidency because I cared about the well being about Dana's dog! So why should I bother?!" It's honestly so unbelievably simple that I'm shocked the show didn't do that.
Andrew "The Angry Sports Fan" Acuna it just proves how lazy the show is and how the makers fails to utilize already established characters. It's super easy
You know... Say what you will about the Wayside Cartoon... Goddamit, It got me into the books, and I still feel those lovely little nostalgia bubbles for me.
In defense of the music: It wasn't exactly an instrumental of Eye of the Tiger, it was slightly different. Granted, it was different on the same level of Johnny Test's theme and American Idiot, so that's not saying much.
In retrospect, it's kind of a cliche of music. They like to make variations of songs like what you named, Mission Impossible theme, or the Scooby Doo gag. Its odd though.
Anime Girl Yeah, it was a very close sound alike. The main difference being the last now of each line going up instead of down. very slight difference, but I'm sure it was enough to stave off lawsuits.
you know what it reminded me of? when How It Should Have Ended make an episode about a movie and they have a slightly altered version of the theme song from the movie so people will recognize the music but it's still not the exact same thing so they don't get sued
*DID YOU KNOW THAT?* In the mid-80s, CBS planned to make a Saturday-morning version of _Wayside School_ as a star vehicle for Pee-Wee Herman. About 99% of the ideas generated for _Wayside_ went into _Pee-Wee's Playhouse._ It's in Caseen Gaines' book _Inside Pee-Wee's Playhouse._ A little something I never knew.
Knightofjustice I think he was just showing clips of teletoon cartoons... I loved totally spies and braceface (regardless of that awful theme song). I still love those shows lol and rewatch them.
I'm from Canada currently taking a broadcasting and film course. When I was at Chorus Entertainment (the company who owns Teletoon), their attitude towards there work was incredibly corporate. They focused more on appealing to their target demographics rather than trying to make anything of artistic merit (they really emphasise their appeal to women and children). It also doesn't help that Canada has the CRTC which requires broadcasters to show 60% Canadian content on their channels, so these cartoons are essentially mandated.
You should reconsider, True our animation industry has glaring issues, but everything else about the country is top quality. Besides, just because they show shitty cartoons on TV doesn't mean you have to watch them, we don't.
Wait, the book was written in the 70's??! DAMN! I was born in the early 2000's and I still found a copy at my library. It's the one with the newer illustrations, though. I actually distinctly remember that picture of Paul pulling Leslie's pig tale better than the other one's you showed.
totally spies was produced by marathon media. i think it just aired in Canada and was made in france like martin mystery and lolirock. if i'm wrong about this sorry because their is a huge difference in animation quality between shows like totally spies and total drama kinda hard to think their were made in the same studio
You're right, actually! Totally Spies! was made by a French studio called Marathon and was brought over to Teletoon around 2002 or so (I think it aired in Europe and the US first). Total Drama was made by Fresh TV and its animation is somewhat of an anomaly when compared to its other cartoons. The cartoon the studio was working on before it (6teen) had a style that looked very different and sported no outlines, and that style was later used for another show, Stoked. Their other cartoon, Grojband, is animated a bit closer to Sidekick style-wise. I don't have a fucking clue where they got the idea for Total Drama's art style from.
Kiera Vermeal I loved it too although I was a senior in high school when it came on...first time North American studios got anime right. Before that all attempts at it just looked awful.
The Wayside books are amazing, each better than the last. I will admit in all truthfulness that my school had prom 3 weeks ago and I (being socially awkward because Mr. Enter and I have a lot in common in our brains) didn't know what I should talk about on an actual date other than the usual weird stuff I talk to my boyfriend about. In the car I found out he had never read the Wayside books so I started fangirling to him about them. At the beginning of prom.
I really have to give you kudos for this. It's pretty rare for a critic to return back and analyze a point other made about a review that was fair, and recognize that the point of the comments was fair too and discuss it. Being in another country as I said, i never even heard of the books, but got the show and frankly liked it enough. It helps me understand your point analyzing that also on that point of view as " not an adaptation ".
Holy shit! When you where talking about how timeless the books were it got me thinking about a book we read as a class in Middle School. It was called "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom". I'm from England but I remembered that the book was set in America and it was so timeless that I didn't know it was released in the 80s. I looked it up and what do you know, it was written by Louis Sachar as well. This guy's a really damn good writer.
Man, I loved wayside as a kid. No idea it was written by the guy who did Holes. No idea it was animated either... though that may have been a blessing.I think I'll skip this and maybe just reread the books now that I've been reminded of them.
I had no idea that this cartoon was based on a series of children's books, let alone that they were written by the same guy who wrote Holes! I freaking loved Holes!
"Ed, Edd n' Eddy came out at around the same time" Don't you mean it WAS around at the time the show came out? Ed, Edd n' Eddy came out in 1999, and this show came out in 2005.
Totally Spies isn't a Canadian series it was made in France and was localized by Teletoon for english specking audiences. Teletoon is also known for dubbing their shows into both french and english (because both are spoken in Canada of course) but is also known to convert one language to another for internationally release.
Nachover 9000 I think DHX is a Canadian company. Because of this, all the voice actors have to be Canadian as well (to protect them from being screwed over by American voice actors), and thus most of them are based out of Vancouver. Tara Strong's the only one part of the main (or mane haha) cast in LA, but she was born in Canada so she still qualifies. It's why she's part of a lot of Canadian content, like Xiaolin Chronicles and MLP FiM.
Skeeter Mania Arthur is actually created by PBS, from Marc Brown, American production, it's animated in Canada by various studios like Corus, Cookie Jar, 9 Story.
Well, like he said, the original Wayside books had a huge effect on his life; they shaped his sense of humor, they inspired him to be a writer, you know. And he's talking about this terrible adaptation of the books; this adaptation that completely butchered the characters he loves and has built connections with, and is composed of a bunch of cliches, that completely go against the creativity and originality the books had. He's talking about this show that spits in the face of the books that practically shaped his character, and that have a special place in his heart. Is it any wonder that he seems on the verge of tears?
As a fellow fan of the books (my first experience was a teacher reading a few chapters a day back in elementary school), I do agree with the video. Especially as I'm not so sure that Wayside School is even as remembered as something like Spider-Man, Garfield or TMNT. As such doing an adaptation for money in my opinion doesn't make sense. You either do it because you're a fan who wants to give it additional life or you don't do it at all. Plus, like the Super Mario Bros movie (which arguably has guilty pleasure appeal), if not for the name being used it would likely fade into obscurity.
NART how did blurred lines cause a lawsuit over the melody specifically then. It's pretty damn close. I think no one really cared enough about the shitty show to bother is all
I absolutely loved the Wayside books as a kid, so when I saw the show, I wasn't just disappointed--I was flat-out confused. The characters' names were the same, but they might as well have pulled their personalities out of a hat. It was all wrong, and I didn't understand how someone could take such a fun, unique, well-made series and turn it into such a mediocre, forgettable show.
6 Million copies in 30 years is still VERY impressive for a book series. Sure it might not seem like that much given say Harry Potter, Movies, or Videogames... Yet even getting 100,000 books sold is considered a great success for a book.
Well MrEnter I wanted to say thank you for this review. I too enjoyed the Wayside books immensely, I still remember being in my school's library curled in a chair as I read the wacky adventures of the class on the 30th floor, the nonexistence of the 19th floor and Ms. Zarves, the way Joy stole her classmates' lunches, the way that one kid was kicked over a fence and the ghost of Ms. Gorf returning as potato salad. The Wayside series was one of my favorite series as a kid, and when I first saw this show I remembered I really tried to like it, I used to record each episode and was eager see what they came up with. But you're right, it was absolutely mediocre, and beyond that, it left such a little impression on me I actually can't remember most of the episodes, even though I've seen almost all of them. The books are memorable, but the show is not, and honestly that is sad. I think of the biggest disappointments was the episode that dealt with Ms. Zarves and the 19th floor, because in the books Allison went to a strange other world in one of the most memorable chapters of the series. In the episode it's shown as a boarded up vent, and literally was a small part of the episode. That kind of rushing over details is just really frustrating. On the bright side, if I were to trust anyone to remake the series, it'd be you.
I had an almost identical experience in elementary school, where I remember being obsessed with the books and show, and recording the episodes to watch later but your absolutely right about them not leaving an impression, I can't remember a single episode of the show that stands out in my memory now.
pokemonmanic3595 Honestly, I actually want to do this show too. Aside from adding 10 new main characters, all 28/29 students will appear and in their original personalities, mostly as some of the characters' traits are based on the cartoon to make some viewers more familiar with the show.
Nice to see you back man. Oh, and don't let all the hate get to you and Strider there are are still people like me, who still like watching your new content. Keep up the good work, and can't wait till the next episode.
Melochronic Enter deserve a lot of the hate he gets. Some of Strider videos can be bad, but he is a nice guy, so I can forgive it. Enter isn't really a good person.
+JG Perez I think if you actually stuck around, watched a bit more of his Admirable Animation videos, and dug a little deeper into Mr. Enter as a person (the man's gotten VERY introspective in recent months, thanks in no small part to a certain Bojack Horseman) before you start calling him "not a good person."
as a kid I loved Braceface, Total Drama, and this show and I did read the books in school as well. Also when I watched Wayside as a kid I had a crush on Maurecia and to a much lesser extent Mrs.Jewls. I was around 10 or 11 when I watched this show
I love the chapters centered around them. In the first book, the nicknames given to them are so hilariously ironic, and in the second book, Eric Bacon's responses to Mr. Kidswatter's interrogation are hilarious.
Oh my god it's been a solid decade since I've read and watched Holes, I remember my 5th grade self being okay about it, but I really wanna give it another go since I'm 21 now lol
"Watch WAYSIDE SCHOOL on TV!" - The front cover of your copy of Sideways Stories ...I just noticed that, and I'm betting that's just a little insulting, all things considering.
Kenneth Ayoob I'm not sure if Mr. Enter is the kind of author who would allow an adaptation of his work. They have to have your permission, and you have every right to say no. Or he could be like J. K. Rowling and only allow it if he's able to help make the adaptation.
being Canadian, i actually grew up with Teletoon and YTV (Basically a Canadian Nickelodeon), so i actually like some of these "garbage" shows. Thats just my opinoin tho
"Guys, I grew up with the Wayside books, they were a big part of my childhood." -Mr. Enter and Chris Stuckmann Wow, I'm actually surprised most of the replies are actually discussions of beloved childhood quotes and not annoying Stuckmann-related quotes.
My childhood book was "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". I actually expect a cartoon out of that one, the books aren't really episodic, but the style is really fitting for a cartoon and let's be honest: It can't be as bad as the live-action movies.
My childhood books were Junie B. Jones, Captain Underpants, and Harry Potter. I'm cautiously excited about the Captain Underpants movie because everything about it looks accurate thus far, and the fact that they got Weird Al to do the theme song seems like a good sign that they get the series.
I remember loving Wayside because I was 9 when it came out, so I was the perfect demographic. I also related to Todd because I’ve been the new kid in a unique class that looped. What I find interesting about Wayside is it was one of the few times when a western animated cartoon was about a weird school and the adventures the characters had within it. With shows were the protagonist is a child like Loud House, Ed Edd man Eddy, Codename: Kids Next Door, and Fillmore the kids and their friends are the unique feature rather than the school. What made Harry Potter so well believed by kids is it took a boring concept like going to school and studying, and made it a place you’d want to go to. Usually only anime makes shows about weird schools like Soul Eater, Food Wars, and My Hero Academia. So it was interesting to see a western cartoon about a weird school. However, like most anime about new kids going to school like Rosario Vampire, Todd is a very bland protagonist mostly because he’s a passive protagonist rather than an active one. Most of the show is him reacting to the weirdness rather than causing it. The only thing separating him from other useless male protagonists is the fact that his hair is orange rather than brown. Also I feel like it would’ve made more sense for Myron and Principle Kidswatter to be father and son. They’re both fat, black, have pink hair, are selfish, and are unaware of their own stupidity. Plus Myron’s egotism and power tripping would’ve made more sense because then he could be like, “My dad’s the principle! So if you don’t do as I say I’ll get you suspended.” They changed so much about the show it wouldn’t have been too much of a stretch. As an adaptation, I completely understand your gripes with this show considering you grew up with the books. My favorite book growing up was Junie B. Jones. If someone turned that book into a tv show and ruined all the characters, I’d be pissed too.
Same here, I remember liking it growing up, admittedly I haven't watched it in years so it could just be nostalgia talking; I should probably re watch it and see how it is now.
I remember reading his Deviantart journal a few years ago analyzing cartoons of the 2000s by each year they came out, and he described Totally Spies as being a "fetish cartoon."
OKAY, I just read the video description, and I am SO RELIEVED. I was sitting here freaking out soooo bad because I KNEW I'd seen this review before, even though this was a brand new upload... I spent so long feeling like I'd been dropped in the Twilight Zone- or, I guess, Wayside School! Anyway, I'm glad that he's updating his older work that he's not totally satisfied with. It's interesting to see which episodes he, personally, was dissatisfied with, and what he chooses to do differently too(especially as someone who, eventually, wants to become a content creator).
Mr. Enter, you are awesome I'm glad that you make these shows give the punishment or praise that they deserve depending on whether being Admirable or Atrocities. I would love to see so much Admirable Animation though. You deserve to see better shows that don't talk down to kids.
+James Moyner It's not complete ;-; all I have for now is a TH-cam post of character designs. God willing, the pilot will be put out for TH-cam by the end of next month.
I felt they left out a few important characters such as Kathy as she was the antagonist of the books and Alison who had quite a few stories revolve around her. The fact they left out so many of the characters from the book was disappointing.
Nerdy Fan once in third grade I had let my friend read my captain underpants book but then my teacher thought it was his and took it and then read it aloud to the whole class
I think what made the Wayside cartoon a failure for me is that it doesn't capture the kids very well... not just that they have almost completely different personalities, but... well, in the books, the kids were plausible as little kids. Even if what happened around them was totally bizarre, it was still plausible because they still talked, acted and overall felt like genuine children. The kids of the cartoon... do not look, act or feel like real children. This is a common problem for cartoon kids, of course, as not all writers are as good as Louis Sachar when it comes to writing kid characters -- but here it's especially blatant. The students look, act and feel more like teenagers, or at least caricatures of teenagers... except for Myron, who looks, feels, and acts more like a caricature of an unusually stupid adult man. (Really, giving him that haircut was not a good idea... it makes him look like he's suffering from premature baldness.)
I remember when me and my 5th grade classmates watching the scene when Todd saved a lot of kids from drowning and gets discipline for that. I told the teacher "Teacher... Is this a David Lynch film?" She responded "Most likely at his worse."
Every wayside episode: Todd goes to school, something wierd happens, Todd points out that a thing is wierd, Todd is blamed for ruining the day, Todd is sent home early with the kindergarten bus, repeat.
Some Wayside episodes I have seen don't do this, but yes, this is really what made Age of Aquarium the worst Wayside episode I have ever seen and it must have its own review later this year. July 13, 2017, 12:05am
He said on tumblr awhile ago that it was basically fetish fuel and thought the main characters were stupid. Personally I don't remember it well enough to back up either statement, but the people at Tv Tropes seem to agree on the fetish part as they even noted it on the page.
The Mansion World Not just that, but each of the main characters cater to a specific fetish. Alex always ends up bound Clover is always the subject of various transformations like being shrunk, getting fat and turning into a furry And Sam is the victim of mindcontrol
Let's play a game I like to call "Reverse the Genders!" Imagine, if you will, a boy who likes the new girl, and for some reason, he just can't help but punch her whenever he sees her. Yeah, double standards are bullshit sometimes...
Double standards? This happens to thousands of little girls across Canada every day Stephen. Theyre bullied by boys and when they tell a parent or a teacher theyre told "aw sweetie, he just likes you!". Does it happen it boys? Yes of course it does. But it is more likely to happen to girls statistically because girls are shyer and boys are more careless at that age. Have you ever heard of hair pulling? Boys in schools will do this do Girls constantly and its never addressed as harassment or bullying by adults but as "aww he just likes you :) "
THANK YOU! I have been trying to tell most of the anime community that bad adaptations do effect the original but most of them choose to ignore reality.
poor Saint Seiya had an entire filler arc and it got cancelled before they could get the real third arc down...fortunately later they made an OVA that completed the story. over half of Naruto is nothing but filler... JoJo only avoided filler because the manga came out in the 80s and the anime in the 2010s. and Season Zero...they took a minor character, made her a main character, and made her annoying as fuck. At least we're spared the sight of a perverted baby taking a shit on someone....
adoplusjr It died after World Tour though. Pretty much when Chris was gone. If they can get him back and some of the originals, then we can friggin get it, m8. 👊
Chris has been in every season, seeing as he's the host of the friggin' show. If you mean the original cast, maybe you'd have a point, but I'll admit I got tied of them after World Tour, and I actually kind of liked most of the Revenge of the Island cast (with some exceptions, of course). But yeah, All-Stars sucked, and I didn't get to see most of Pakhitew Island. Hell, I never even got around to watching The Ridonculous Race, but to my knowledge that season was more of a spin-off series than anything else.
Chris was in all seasons, but Ridonculous Race bc that one was a spin off where they killed Noah's character. I liked the first 3 seasons (never got around to any of the others except Ridonculous Race) esp Noah, but they....trashed him so badly. Some of the other characters introduced in RR were really good tho!!
I think the punch montage using the same animation over and over again should show repetitiveness. Not defending all reused animations but just this one time.
Video game adaptations have that same issue you mentioned. A lot of people will just watch the movie & never plat the games. Resident Evil for example has a movie series about a character that was never in the games & the characters from the games are just there. It actually feels like a different franchise.
The animation itself is solid, but the appearance does look a tad cheap in my opinion (this coming from someone who does really like the show). That being said, it's very distinct in its own right and has both good and bad qualities to it. There's been some pretty bad animation errors in regards to its character modeling, but I do like the variety of shapes, heights, etc. It also feels cheap compared to some of the other shows that the same production company has made (6teen and Stoked).
vcom741 Total Drama's style works in its favour. It's not a soft show so the thick lines are actually pretty fitting. While it can appear stilted or "cheap", it still manages to look pretty good in action scenes, which I appreciate (making Flash expressive is hard haha). And to be fair, Steven Universe is supposed to have good animation but even then, it's riddled with weird inconsistencies. So there's nothing wrong with liking the style, even if someone else called it "bad"!
good review, I remember this show from from when I was younger , I didn't think it that bad of a show although I did think it was one Nickelodeon weakness shows those
Never read the books, but did watch the show briefly when it was on Nick. Not exactly in-watchable, but the only memorable and worthwhile thing was the theme song. Talk about wasted potential, it sounds like the studio practically had it gift wrapped for them and they still screwed things up.
Don't forget, when you are making a kids show, you are NOT making it for the kids. You are making it for the parents to approve to their kids. Just like when we create songs for commercials, we aren't making it for the products, we are making it for the teenage girls. Sadly, as a person who's job is to advertise for the entertainment industry, creating stock characters and scenarios is the best choice. Why try to create something unique or fantastical when you can create something that will work for a short lived show that will piss off no one? The Way Side TV show was never intended to go past 50 episodes, even if it exploded with popularity. It was DESIGNED to make some money, keep your employees working and move to the next project that was in the planning phase. When you make a risky project, you are risking your job. No one likes to mail their resume everywhere before your family is on food stamps. You can ONLY take risks when you can afford them.
From what I understand, the reason Canada makes a lot of crap cartoons because they have a rule that a certain percentage of all media must be Canadian in origin, probably to keep its entertainment and culture from being enveloped entirely by American movies and shows. The effect of which is a bunch of people get a little money to make a show quick and cheap so they can say that yes, at least X% of their stuff is in fact Canadian.
Mr. Enter, I've been a fan of you for a while now, and I wanted to recommend something for an Admirable Animations, you did the episode of Phineas & Ferb, "Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together!" And I wanted to recommend another episode called "Out of Toon", it's a late Season 1 episode about Phineas, Ferb, and the rest of the gang becoming superheroes inspired by shows like Justice League and the more Shonen and action style anime. It also makes some great jokes about writing and producing, as well as plenty of others. Heck, I'm watching it as I type this, and I'm having a hard time not messing up from laughing and chuckling so much. Easily one of my favorites.
I remember when the Wayside cartoon came out on Nick, which was around the same time my 3rd grade teacher started reading the Wayside books to my class. Before she read the books, I remember liking the cartoon. But after she started reading the books, I as well as many other kids in my class noticed many of the inaccuracies of the show, and I remember not really caring for the show afterwards. So yes, even a bunch of eight-year-olds could recognize how poor of an adaptation this was
Then again, they're the ones I've grown up with (and still have), so maybe it's just nostalgia talking. Also, I definitely agree with Julie Brinckloe's illustrations being the way to go! Wayside School was also a big part of my childhood, and it's nice to see that I wasn't alone. Thanks for taking a look at this! But I digress. That way, we could possibly see some of Louis' more creative ideas actually brought to television. I'd love to see another attempt at an adaptation! Too bad this series turned out as it did. Might be fun to watch it play out. Or something like that. They could make all the scenes "properly", then just show them in reverse order... Man, I would have loved to see them do the chapter where Jenny was late to school.
Jamison Parks I bought the first reprint since the 70's when I was in 3rd grade in 1990. The more realistic illustrations were awesome b/c they made you feel like the stories were more believable which made the stories more surreal. These don't even look even human .....ugh.
"Hello? John Enter? We at Teletoon really loved your book and would love to offer-"
MrEnter: *hangs up and goes into hiding*
If he got Fresh TV to do it, it could be passable.

He is the only normal character 😅
Pirate of Rock Thank you I love that show
Pirate of Rock Yeah, sometimes it works; really hit and miss.

Those aren't the chords for "Eye of the Tiger"... it really just is a sound-alike. Same rhythm and structure, but a completely different chord progression.
...a really BAD chord progression. It'd be hard to write a decent melody to sing over that.
Agreed.
Like The Krusty Krab Training Video, but worse.
It's just different enough to avoid getting sued.
IIRC these restrictions have been relaxed lately, which has allowed for Canada to finally get channels like Nick and Disney, but it gives a lot of context to Canadian animation pre-2015.
long af explanation.
but well explained.
What you know, you learn something new every day. Thanks for the lesson.

I believe how the world treats Todd along with his characterization works. Todd always keeps going despite all the shit thrown at him. He never feels hopeless or miserable, unlike, say, dark-era Squidward. He's always optimistic.
That being said, him being picked was pretty questionable as you stated.
Kind of like Milo Murphy?

Total drama doesn't look the best but in my opinion it was a great show
Endy The show was fun enough to make up for the animation definately.
It was great. Just the ride amount of crude, without being cringey and, if some characters were mean spirited, they got what they deserved, which felt extremely satisfying. Characters were all distinct and unique. And the characters that were blatant stereotypes were that way intentionaly in order to parody those stereotypes.
I think the same
Endy Definitely.
Endy
Yes agreed
I always kinda hated this show because every episode was just about being shitty to todd, who is just a kid and never deserved the pretty awful stuff that happened to him. It would just make me uncomfortable to watch all his "friends" and even his teacher treat him like trash every. single. episode.
Are your friends only sometimes nice to you? No, then they wouldn't be your friends.
Well, I've never watched this show, but I HATE squidward torture, so I probably wouldn't like it.
It is true even the principal does not help but he also does not try to stop it from happening
I also didn't like it because it was so boring
ReptarOnIce no true words have ever been spoken

You took the words out of my mouth on that. I'm not the only one around here who hated it & to this very day my opinions haven't changed on this series cause the Flash animation looks outdated to be honest & Todd I show sympathy for.
@@thechuckjosechannel.2702 this series pisses me off on so many levels, i got actually angry hearing enter rip it a new one. like, it's so unfaithful to the book and barely relates to it other than the premise and the stories.

We're sorry, this episode was taken down for use of the copyrighted song "Eye of the Tiger."
It's not an instrumental version of Eye of the Tiger. It bears a very strong resemblance, but it's not exactly the same.
Chaosdude7111 Its exactly the same song with the same chords.
If I were a member of survivor I would sue the shit out of the people behind the show
I have an idea of how they could have made this cartoon work from a story-telling perspective. It may be strange, but hear me out:
1: Have the main character be Ben/Mark and not Todd.
@David Silverman dude, Louis is the best character of the show
I have a idea for a special that have Louis as the narrator explaining the various stories around wayside. The first involved the Mrs. Gorf story with the Bryon story cram in the middle to explain why he late. He the one who defeats Gorf by using his mirror.
Also get rid of Mauricia
I like his new format. it delivers the criticism while also conveying the love for the product. I hope you can do more of this.
I remember when my best friend and I were in kindergarten, we used to watch this show a lot, and we actually thought that getting punched by a girl meant that she loved you cuz that's what Mauricia always did to Todd. So one day, we went to the park and tried to get a girl to punch us. I'm never going to forget that memory XD

thinking about it, the way the show could've made the connection between Myon's character from the book and the TV show Myron is this: basically keep all the back story about how he lost his class presidency, and have THAT be the reason he's become a selfish lazy brat. "I lost my presidency because I cared about the well being about Dana's dog! So why should I bother?!"
It's honestly so unbelievably simple that I'm shocked the show didn't do that.

Didn't Spongebob also use eye of the tiger?
I was gonna say, that is a lawsuit safe ripoff,
you know what it reminded me of? when How It Should Have Ended make an episode about a movie and they have a slightly altered version of the theme song from the movie so people will recognize the music but it's still not the exact same thing so they don't get sued
*DID YOU KNOW THAT?*
In the mid-80s, CBS planned to make a Saturday-morning version of _Wayside School_ as a star vehicle for Pee-Wee Herman.
About 99% of the ideas generated for _Wayside_ went into _Pee-Wee's Playhouse._ It's in Caseen Gaines' book _Inside Pee-Wee's Playhouse._ A little something I never knew.
I'd have to imagine it would've been at least better than this, though on the other hand, it could've been worse.

Well, I'm not moving to Canada anytime soon.
You should reconsider, True our animation industry has glaring issues, but everything else about the country is top quality. Besides, just because they show shitty cartoons on TV doesn't mean you have to watch them, we don't.
Chrous owns EVERY SINGLE FUCKING KIDS CHANNEL in Canada.
As Sheila Broflonski would say: BLAME CANADA!
@@Akrenix They own Global News too. Which would probably explain why they show no actual news on that channel half the time.
Yeah you are right but when i first watched Totally Spies i never knew they where made by the same studio

Dude it sounded like you were about to cry while talking about the books near the end
Oh... Oh no. I'm glad I have the original print books. YOURs appear to have the "watch the show" printed ON THE COVER.
Holy shit! When you where talking about how timeless the books were it got me thinking about a book we read as a class in Middle School. It was called "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom". I'm from England but I remembered that the book was set in America and it was so timeless that I didn't know it was released in the 80s. Totally Spies isn't a Canadian series it was made in France and was localized by Teletoon for english specking audiences. I think DHX is a Canadian company.

It does make sense
Me: Who uploads a video at 2 AM?
MrEnter: Oh boy 2 AM!
T i m e z o n e s
you sounded on the verge of tears around 22 minutes in. I don't know why.
That isn't actually eye of the tiger. Just something that is almost 99% the same.
Yeah, but it's close enough that it should've cause _some_ sort of lawsuit.
Sadly, it is different enough, especially with the lack of vocals for there to be no ground to stand in in terms of legal action.
NART how did blurred lines cause a lawsuit over the melody specifically then. It's pretty damn close. I think no one really cared enough about the shitty show to bother is all
You can sue anyone over anything, it doesn't mean it will hold up in court. Plus, the more money you have the longer you can stay in court.
NART the original creator won, because it's the same music, it wasn't frivilous, it was blatant plagiarism.
Let's just hope Captain Underpants is a good adaptation
It isn't
mrmimeisfunny did you see it by any chance?
mrmimeisfunny it's not even out yet
Carl Bloke I hope so too, I loved those books as a kid
beats0me yep
The only thing I remember about the Wayside cartoon is how much I hated Myron.
Nice to see you back man.
Oh, and don't let all the hate get to you and Strider there are are still people like me, who still like watching your new content.
Keep up the good work, and can't wait till the next episode.
Melochronic Agreed.
Strider and Enter inspired me to be an animator! ^-^
Magic Ma'am Cool!
Melochronic
Enter deserve a lot of the hate he gets.
I was around 10 or 11 when I watched this show
Lol I had a crush on Todd as a kid. I hated that Maurecia hurt him so much.
I remember that one episode where Maurecia had her helmet and hair down my lesbian started showing
I don't care what anyone says, the coolest characters in the books were The Three Erics.
I love the chapters centered around them. In the first book, the nicknames given to them are so hilariously ironic, and in the second book, Eric Bacon's responses to Mr. Kidswatter's interrogation are hilarious.
Did...Did Mr. Enter just imply that he's never seen Holes? You better get on it, that is a GREAT movie! Great book too!
Grace Hershey Agreed!!
"I can fix that"
Oh my god it's been a solid decade since I've read and watched Holes, I remember my 5th grade self being okay about it, but I really wanna give it another go since I'm 21 now lol
"Watch WAYSIDE SCHOOL on TV!" - The front cover of your copy of Sideways Stories
...I just noticed that, and I'm betting that's just a little insulting, all things considering.
The worst part about adaptations of books is that if the adaptation stinks the front cover of the original will be there naïvely trying to sell it.
I swear Todd is Mikey from Kappa Mikey.
Chaos Frenzy I THOUGHT THAT TOO
I think it's the hair.
Chaos Frenzy And his clothes... sort of.
All I can say is that if someone does an adaptation of your book, they should consult you for accuracy.
Kenneth Ayoob I'm not sure if Mr. Enter is the kind of author who would allow an adaptation of his work. They have to have your permission, and you have every right to say no. Or he could be like J. K. Rowling and only allow it if he's able to help make the adaptation.
He's expressed interest in his books becoming an animated TV show, and he does want a hand in it all, so it's not too out there.
being Canadian, i actually grew up with Teletoon and YTV (Basically a Canadian Nickelodeon), so i actually like some of these "garbage" shows.
Thats just my opinoin tho
Same here buddy
fhat
same.
o p i n o i n
it had some good ones. hard to find, but good shit nonetheless
"Guys, I grew up with the Wayside books, they were a big part of my childhood."
-Mr. Enter and Chris Stuckmann
Wow, I'm actually surprised most of the replies are actually discussions of beloved childhood quotes and not annoying Stuckmann-related quotes.
Benjamin Abramowitz My childhood book was "The Lost Tomb Of King Tut."
My childhood book was "Diary of a Wimpy Kid".
I actually expect a cartoon out of that one, the books aren't really episodic, but the style is really fitting for a cartoon and let's be honest: It can't be as bad as the live-action movies.
ReasyRandom I LOVED THOSE BOOKS
My childhood books were Junie B. Jones, Captain Underpants, and Harry Potter. I'm cautiously excited about the Captain Underpants movie because everything about it looks accurate thus far, and the fact that they got Weird Al to do the theme song seems like a good sign that they get the series.
My childhood books where Mein Kampth, Fifty Shades of Gray and Spongebob You're Fired (book)
I actually didnt know they were written in the 70s
It truly is timeless. It always feels current.
*Readys a noose
Sees upload from Mr. Enter
Enters my legs into the noose instead and just swings watching a video on my computer
Sorry for the outdated joke in advance, but.....
LEEEEET'S GET ROIIIIGHHHTT INTO THE NOOOOSE!!!
His mouth said "High noon"
His heart said "High Noose"
A. A. Ran what a fascist
Mussolini was hung upside down!
I fucking wheezed
...I don't get how trying to get high rated comments, I don't get anything, but just being stupid for the sake of it ends up getting more attention.
But...Totally Spies! I really wanna hear your reasoning for not liking it. Genuinely interested.
Same here, I remember liking it growing up, admittedly I haven't watched it in years so it could just be nostalgia talking; I should probably re watch it and see how it is now.
Book Lover Hm, same. Would seem silly to claim an absolute if I accidentally bought a ticket for the Nostalgia Train.
ChopstickGirl241 I liked it too
I watched it recently, and it still holds up. Altough it's really clichéd, it has it's moments.
I remember reading his Deviantart journal a few years ago analyzing cartoons of the 2000s by each year they came out, and he described Totally Spies as being a "fetish cartoon."
Canadian animation is actually a lot better when you grow up with it
Yeah. like Martin Mystery, Totally Spies, thos Teletoon shows of the early 2000's...
Lps MaineCoon So is a lot of things. Like old cartoon network
Lps MaineCoon everything is better when you grow up with it
Heroin is better when you grow up on it...
Clee Clee! you usually die Young too so not much chance you will out grow it.
My dream is that when my cartoon series comes out, he'll give it a review. Even if it's an atrocity XD :3
What's your show and how can it be seen?
+James Moyner It's not complete ;-; all I have for now is a TH-cam post of character designs. God willing, the pilot will be put out for TH-cam by the end of next month.
Good luck with that also I've never heard of this show or the books until he talked about it.
James Moyner final fantasy question what Mr enter's class be
I felt they left out a few important characters such as Kathy as she was the antagonist of the books and Alison who had quite a few stories revolve around her. The fact they left out so many of the characters from the book was disappointing.
Love your vids!!!
Also I want to read wayside...and I didn't know you were a writer I'm gonna order one of your books if I can...
Yes! Read Wayside! It's the best!
Riggin Burgess I want to read Wayside too, but I do have vague memories from my teachers reading it to my class in elementary school.
Nachover 9000
Yeah my teacher read it to me as a kid! :D
I’m reading Wayside to my little cousins and they LOVE it.
That was the Episode "Age of Aquarium" i think.
Hey, MrEnter! You should do a "Top 10 worst Plankton Plot Episodes", mainly because like Patrick's a Prick and Squiward Torture porns they NEVER stop.
They should've just called Season 8 "The Plankton Season", He literally appears in every second episode.
Well, at least Plankton is still a decent character
Comment on video that has nothing to do with the actual video... :|
And he should do Top 10 'Mr. Krabs is a cheap asshole' episodes, because there are tons of those too!
that's actually not eye of the tiger, the notes are different. It is close enough that I wonder how they didn't get sued
Knight Blade I thought it sounded a little off, but I'm not a music expert so I couldn't be sure.
Wait, what's your beef with Totally Spies?
He said on tumblr awhile ago that it was basically fetish fuel and thought the main characters were stupid.
Personally I don't remember it well enough to back up either statement, but the people at Tv Tropes seem to agree on the fetish part as they even noted it on the page.
vladimir2tod4ever97 Catsuits --> S&M. There's your fetish fuel. :P
The Mansion World Not just that, but each of the main characters cater to a specific fetish.
Alex always ends up bound
Clover is always the subject of various transformations like being shrunk, getting fat and turning into a furry
And Sam is the victim of mindcontrol
Cascade Hellsing I never knew that as I never watched the show. No wonder our generation is so screwed up. lol
+Cascade
It's like youtube's kids channels except more subtle.
Let's play a game I like to call "Reverse the Genders!" Imagine, if you will, a boy who likes the new girl, and for some reason, he just can't help but punch her whenever he sees her. Yeah, double standards are bullshit sometimes...
If that happened it would be controversial as hell
Sounds like a stupid fever dream of mine. I'll pass.
Stephen Brown isn't that exactly how the world treats things though??? A boy threw a rock at you, that must mean he loves you!!
Roma TM According to Ms. Teacher Person...
Boys in schools will do this do Girls constantly and its never addressed as harassment or bullying by adults but as "aww he just likes you :) "
They dumped half of the old characters and then they MADE A NEW ONE that doesnt speak for the entirety of the series (Her name was Caroline?)
Her name’s Elizabeth, not Caroline.
20:55
her name is definitely supposed to be pronounced "bee-bee." It's why her last name is Gunn. Bebe Gunn. and her brother is Ray Gunn.
"Brother"
remember, when the teacher mentioned him to the mother, she went "Whos Ray?"
McBehrer Its a joke that its be be
He's a student on the 19th Floor.
There's this one Teletoon show called 6teen. I personally kinda like it, but I would love to hear your opinion!
THANK YOU! I have been trying to tell most of the anime community that bad adaptations do effect the original but most of them choose to ignore reality.
Why tell the anime community when they obv won't care as long as they get to see their characters
Mm, kinda like how Teen Titans Go! makes things kinda shitty regarding adaptations?
poor Saint Seiya had an entire filler arc and it got cancelled before they could get the real third arc down...fortunately later they made an OVA that completed the story.
over half of Naruto is nothing but filler...
JoJo only avoided filler because the manga came out in the 80s and the anime in the 2010s.
and Season Zero...they took a minor character, made her a main character, and made her annoying as fuck. At least we're spared the sight of a perverted baby taking a shit on someone....
The Total Drama series was lit
adoplusjr It died after World Tour though. Pretty much when Chris was gone. If they can get him back and some of the originals, then we can friggin get it, m8. 👊
Kunio Dorbis was he not in the last one?
Kunio Dorbis Are they gonna maje more?
Wait the first wayside book was made THAT LONG AGO!?!?! Jesus, I thought it came out early 2000s or something cause those a bunch as a kid.
Jordan keane Same. When I was in 3rd grade, my teacher would always read the books to us at the end of the day. And that was in 2002-2003.
Same
....I can't believe that such a wonderful kids' book turned into something so.... not that book....
Me neither.
This is probably my favorite Animated Atrocity, and I’ve seen the review for Norm Of The North
Yeah
Wait, Total Drama has a bad animation? I kinda like that style...
It also feels cheap compared to some of the other shows that the same production company has made (6teen and Stoked).
vcom741 despite the fact that the characters look cheap, I think it has a nice charm that works well with the show
I think the somewhat cheap look of the show kind of have it that flavor in my opinion.
vcom741 to me TDI's animation was alright. I prefer Flash animation in America
vcom741
Total Drama's style works in its favour.
Don't diss Totally Spies and the original Total Drama Island. They're not that bad. Their squeals... eh.
DragonArbock TDA was good and TDWT is tolerable. TDI is my favorite.
I did like World Tour. Action always bugged me, and I learned why- Lindsey was supposed to be in the final 2, not Beth.
DragonArbock He said he likes Total Drama, just isn't a fan of the animation.
good review, I remember this show from from when I was younger , I didn't think it that bad of a show although I did think it was one Nickelodeon weakness shows those
Like Total Drake World tour, Total Drama Action and Island TBH.
If I had my own cartoon channel in Canada, I would seek older better Canadian cartoons to meet the required quota!
Welcome back Mr. Enter!
I have the copy your looking for! This was (and still is) my favorite book ever! I dislike my 3rd book because it has the newer illustrations.
Jamison Parks I bought the first reprint since the 70's when I was in 3rd grade in 1990. The more realistic illustrations were awesome b/c they made you feel like the stories were more believable which made the stories more surreal. These don't even look even human .....ugh.
