In the late 80s I was working in Texas and chasing a elusive whisky bottle, I was do remodle work on one of his properties and had the great privilege to watch him Wright a song about a jack rabbit. He has mental and musical talents nobody knows about.
We’ve seen him three times, twice in small East Texas venues. He is so much fun, and he interacts with his audience. My son and I were so tickled to get an acknowledgement from him, waving at him from the audience. I love how he sings his hits, Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die, then at the end, we all “have church” with lively gospel sing-a-long. You can’t help but love this man, and I’m sad that he’s nearing the end of his life, but a life well-lived. God willing, we can keep him just a while longer. Love you, Willie Nelson.
Yes, it’s thrilling to know it’s YOU he’s looking at, waving and smiling. I love his small, up-close venues when he coming through Texas . It’s quite a difference to see in those small settings. He really loves his audience. And I was delighted to discover his older groupies, men and women up in years that follow him when he’s doing local venues. You know they’d spent time with him by the way they talk. They are so cute. The last time I saw him was at a bigger venue, and we too far away. He was obviously tired and struggling to catch his breath, and I really thought we might lose him soon. But he has rebounded. If only we could be blessed to have him for another decade or two!
Well here we are three years later and he's thankfully still with us, praise the Lord. I just finally saw him last night for the first time, and I'm so grateful that I finally got to see him. Unfortunately it wasn't at a smaller intimate venue, but as an opening act at a huge stadium show for George Strait, but it was still awesome to finally get to see him in person.
Redheaded stranger is my 6 yr old daughter's favorite album, she loved watching these songs be performed by Willie back when I (her daddy) was only a year old 😁. She's a 3rd generation die hard Willie Nelson fan. Thanks for posting, and THANK YOU WILLIE.

he is, actually. His solo playing is like a stripped backed Django. It's minimalistic, but actually shows a pretty deep understanding of music theory. Targeting chord tones, using triads, playing the changes, diminished scales etc. The gypsy jazz influence is there. He's not just a strummer of cowboy chords.
