  • In this video we look at a how to make a car awning with a tarp for under R1500 (US$100).
Tarps, or tarpaulins, are great for wind, rain and sun protection and come in all different shapes and sizes.
The tarp I'm using in this video is 3.5 metres by 3.5 metres (11.5ft x 11.5ft) and puts out a shade area of around 12 square metres (132 square feet). This is a really practical size and offers plenty of space and shelter for a small group.
One of the biggest challenges when putting up a trap is the wind, so this setup makes use of your car to not only block the wind, but also to anchor the tarp so that it's super quick and easy to set up - even on your own.
Step 1: Park your car so that it offers the greatest sun and wind protection.
Step 2: Fill 3 sandbags to about halfway (use pegs if you're not on soft sand).
Step 3: Roll down the sandbags and place them on a nylon strap that you have prepared with a loop knot at each end and a large carabiner clipped in. Feed the carabiner through the loop knot on the opposite end, and pull to tighten.
Step 4: Clip a guy rope onto each sandbag carabiner.
Step 5: Walk the sandbags out to roughly the position they will be in for the final setup.
Step 6: Feed a nylon strap that you've prepared with a loop knot through the cab of your car and position the knot roughly a fist's width from the edge of the car and clip in a carabiner.
Step 7: Clip a corner of the tarp into this carabiner and walk the other three corners out, clipping them into the sandbag guy ropes as you go.
Step 8: Position the sandbags so that the tarp is nice and tight and then prop it up with 3 poles.
There are dozens of different ways to set this system up, so play around with it and let me know what you come up with.
Here's everything you'll need (I just found the best looking products with good reviews on Amazon):

Such a high quality video. There are too many over-engineered setups. I was specifically looking for a technique requiring minimal hardware, and one that could take advantage of a large tarp for very broad coverage. Thank you!

That's great!! So glad you found this video helpful. I literally use this setup practically every time I go out now. It's so quick and easy (and fun).

Great tutorial, nice job! I am in Phoenix, Arizona and today it was ~44°C so having an easy way to create shade out at the lake is critical 😅 Sandbags will be perfect, we definitely have lots of sand hahaha. Cheers!

Haha - that's great! We get similar temperatures this side, but probably not as dry as Arizona. I still use this setup all the time :)

This is perfect. My sister and I are going diving and trying to figure out how to make a beach shade. Thank you for figuring it out for us

Love your awesome tip, placing tiedowns around the roof as anchor point, great idea 👍I don't have roof racks, never thought of doing this .. thankyou for sharing 🙏🥰 Di NSW Australia

Thanks Di - Glad it helped. I've been using this setup for years now and that anchor point is key :) One addition I've been using recently is adding a centre pole for more head room. Works like a charm.

Thanks for your video. I hadn't thought of the sandbag procedure as I usually don't go to a beach since I live in the desert. The ground is super hard in many places but I can scrape enough soil or use rocks to make my anchor points. I prefer tarp setups like you demonstrated to buying an awning for my Jeep. Your way is so much cheaper and is relatively fast, though not nearly as fast as a 270° awning. By the way, I did like and I did subscribe. I look forward to finding more of your videos.

That's great - So glad you like the video. We often go to places where there is no sand at all, only stones, and I just fill the bags with rocks for the same effect. Nothing will really come close to how quick it is to set up a car awning, but this way has a lot of cost advantages, plus, especially if someone helps you, you can get set up pretty quickly. Lately, I've been adding a centre pole for extra head room.

Thanks for the tips. Why is your snorkel facing out?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not sure to be honest. When I bought the car it came with the snorkel. The guys here do a lot of deep river crossings so maybe it has something to do with it being more difficult for splash water to get in from the front?

Thank you Bevin! I'm a fellow South African, and you have no idea how much this video has helped me as a single mom.
I have a self-built van set-up (nothing fancy, and on a tiny budget) and I didn't want to spend the ridiculous amount of money on the 4×4 awnings everyone is trying to sell me.
I've now been playing around with the tarp. I am anchoring it to the vehicle in two spots, pulling it tight, but the poles stay wobbly, even with very strong pegs. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Celeste - that's great! I'm so glad you're using this setup. The best way for me to help is if you can send me a picture of what your set up looks like. Please feel free to send me an email at bevan@strayalongtheway.com and I'll take a look.

@@Strayalongthewaythank you kind sir! I will do my setup this coming weekend again (where my vehicle is, I am unable to set it up)
If your tips did not help, I will definitely make use of your kind offer.🌈
