Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! I'm teaming up with GiveInternet.org to help provide students with internet and devices to better their future. If you are keen to help, check out - giveinternet.org/Techdox You are awesome!
@@Techdox I have a lot of space on my nas, and so that may be an option for me as well. I have been looking for a good and reliable backup solution and would like to use something like Duplicati that ticks the box of being cheap, easy, and reliable. 😉
Ive only got a small proxmox setup but last night I backed it up via clonzilla to a 2T m.2 eternal usb. Wouldn't this be a better solution than paying for cloud services. I know in your case you need to ensure that your content is available should the house burn down and you are showing the duplicati process. Or maybe this onsite backup is also available to you. Anyhoo good content and the look of relief was worth all the pain.
That's funny, the clonezilla solution was one of my first thoughts when I started (and still in progress) learning and using Proxmox 👍 (but I am also lazy and a click and forget solution seems to be for now the easiest 🙄😳.
While I agree with you, this wouldn't be considered a 3-2-1 backup anymore. An alternative, no monthly cost option that keeps a similar level of resiliency is putting a spare NAS at an off-site location (friend, family, 2nd property, etc). You keep the same on-premise, off-site, and multiple copies approach.
Good you got everything recovered, I too use Duplicati and love it, but was thinking for my Proxmox machines to try out URbackup and of course the Proxmox Backup Server. Haven't used any of those yet for Proxmox, but I am keen to see how it works. And as I am a little backup crazy, I might have a proxmox backup server plus a URbackup 👍 thanks for sharing 👍
There is also the built in backup functionality for proxmox under data centre -> backup. It's simple to set up and could be a simple starting point before setting up a complete system :D
@@Techdox Proxmox has a robust built-in mechanism for VM backup and restore, thus your Duplicatti setup for VM was unnecessary. If you had it in place, you could attach the backup store and restore the VMs within minutes. Unfortunately, Proxmox does not have an easy backup and restore for the host itself.
@@Techdox I now have a NAS as of today - IMO, you should setup a local Proxmox VM backup first. Personally, I find it very convenient to be able to just nuke a VM I just broke and restore the working one from the backup within a minute. Another option is to schedule VM snapshots. This way you may roll back within seconds.

Amazing... thanks for sharing. Can hear the anxiety in your voice -- it's brave of you to run this recovery "live" with us.
It was a tense moment! That's for sure. I now have a NAS all my VMs are backed up to as well as an off site backup :)

I have the off site cloud backup for now while I build my NAS :)

I run PBS on an old PC I built years ago and it's working great.
I run mine on proxmox as lxc containers. Just backup to a different node.

Setting this up again now! Thanks for the reminder

@@RomanShein1978 I did have snapshots but that went when my entire server decided to die, haha.
I have PBS in a virtual machine under Proxmox and also Truenas. But both have direct acces to a separate dedicated ssd and harddrive.
You shd be using Proxmox Backup Server
Really need a dedicated machine for that
I have PBS in a VM on my Truenas Scale server.
Yeah, something I’ll have to do!
