    I have 3 switches that connect to my living room light. 2 of them have multiple switches so I cannot install the smart switch on those spots. The 3rd switch is when I need to install. I have one set of wires coming in. It has a red, white and black and a copper ground. There are no additional wires. How can I hook this 3way smart switch up in that spot?

    Good instruction. I changed one of the switch to smart while keeping the other as it is. The issue is smart one works only when the other is ON. Not sure if I mixed up the wires or both have to be smart. Would appreciate any help.

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  ปีที่แล้ว

      One can be “dumb” but if it’s in a 3 way circuit it would need to be a 3 way switch and if it is it sounds like the wires are mixed up or it’s actually not a 3 way circuit.

    On the diagrams you say one traveler cable go to the opposite cable on the other switch, but on this smart 3 ways you are connecting the same traveler from the outside left side to the same left side of the other switch, so the diagram are for a regular not smart switch? Please let me know about the 3 ways smart switch.

      Since the smart switches use pigtail connectors instead of screw terminals go by the wire labels on the switch instead of the side

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s hard to give you a specific answer without more info but it sounds like possibly one of the wires are not connected to the right lead. If the setup in your situation looks non standard or you aren’t confident it may be best to check with an electrician due to risks involved with electricity.

    I'm not getting any power to the 3-switch on the load side - meaning the LED on the switch itself isn't lighting up (and the overhead lights aren't working either). I tried the same switch on the line side of the 3-way and it lights up fine. Why would this be?

  • @jturn4787
    @jturn4787 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have set up a bunch of these but am having issues with one 3-way Wifi switch in a chain operating outside patio lights [3w - 4w - 4w - 4w - 3w]. I have the load wire coming in from box identified (hot no matter how the switches are manipulated). It connects to Wifi, I can press power on the app and the light turns on/off BUT the power button on the app doesn't turn green when ON. This causes and error that doesn't allow the timer function to work properly. I discovered that on my other 3-way Wifi switches at the end of a switch chain, I have to figure out the exact switch pattern for the other switches in the chain for the Wifi switch to not show error (even though it turns the lights on/off). I went through 16 iterations of switch patterns without luck. Any thoughts on what I can do or the issue?

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't recall seeing whether or not a 3-way + 4-way circuit was supported with these or not. Did you verify that should work already from Treatlife?

    • @jturn4787
      @jturn4787 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have two other switch chains with a single 4-way in the middle- once I experimented w/ the switch pattern, the on/off at the app turns green and times correctly. I don’t see how the Wifi switch circuitry could differentiate between one or more 4-ways in the line.

    Can I use this for in a 4way set up? Where I use one of these to make the system smart with 2 4 way switches at either ends?

  • @johngarmley3859
    @johngarmley3859 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What are your options if you have 2 3-ways switches and a 4-way switch sitting between them or multiple 4-way switches in between the 3-way. When I wired my house smart switches wasn't a thing, Now there everywhere but my home was wired for convenience with the ability to turn off most of the the lights while exiting the house. Will this switch also act as a 4-way switch or do I need to look at a different product.

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you turn things on or off in that setup? You need multiple switches to change state to turn something on or off?

    • @johngarmley3859
      @johngarmley3859 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reallyMello yes there are multiple switches. example: I have 4 places throughout the house I need to turn on and off a light. this would consist of this type of setup.power->3-way->4-way->4-way->3-way->light. This gives you the ability to turn on and off the light in any of the 4 places in the house. If you need to add 5 location you would just add another 4-way in the middle.

    this is an amazing video thank you so much. i was struggling so hard to understand my switch box. whoever build the house made the white wire load( if i disconnect the switch and touch it, it's the only one that gives me spikey hair) and the black wire neutral. i am looking and searching for a video for a 4 way setup for over 1 week now and can't find one. any chance you would make one any time soon and explain exactly like you did in this one(i am interested on how to wire the whole circuit in between boxes because whoever did it 20-30y ago seems like they were in a rush and couldn't care less for the cables colors)

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It is very frustrating when the colors are different or inconsistent. That is the great thing about standards--there are so many to choose from...I've never had a chance to work with a 4 way setup before but if I do in the future I'll be sure to post a video.

    I’m replacing 1 dumb 3-way switch with a Treatlife 3-way. When I connect the line (black) wire to the switch it turns the neutral and both travelers hot, making the switch not work. I tried 2 switches and each have same result. Any advice is appreciated. I’m wondering if I have defective switches.

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike. I've not run into this myself but some googling seems to indicate that could occur if a neutral wire became disconnected somewhere or if a hot wire is somehow joined to a neutral somewhere. It might be worth checking with an electrician.

      @@reallyMello Can you demo this? I am having an issue where one smart and one manual switch all works correctly (smart, manual, and app all control light as expected) but smart switch always indicates off (both on the switch LED and in the app). I read in an amazon answer that it might be the result of a long run of traveler wires so that the "dead" traveler would have some inductive pickup off the "hot" traveler such that the smart switch would not detect the switches state correctly.

      @PumpkinDog33 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cmearls55 Not sure how my house is wired but my smart switch worked fine on either switch (tried them both). What I found out the issue was (after a lot of painful research and chatting with not so helpful customer service) is that if the distance between the two switches is too far the 'off' traveler wire will pick up some inductance from the 'on' traveler wire which will throw off the switch from detecting if the light is on or night. The one I had problems with was really far apart (front door and garage door for outside lights). I've since installed the same switch in other places in my house and it has worked just fine. The one with a long run actually works most of the time now too... sometimes it doesn't.

      @@PumpkinDog33 Many thanks for the insights and helpful guidance! The inductance issue is very interesting, and may explain an issue I've had with a long hallway. Ana Voorhees this video you are commenting on is for a 3 way switch. Are you installing this version or the other model for single pole use?

      @@reallyMello I know it's not the same one, n I'm sorry if you aren't sure, but I am reaching out to people who have used smart switches and are more educated than I am lol

    Hey man! What if you only have one traveler? White, Black, Ground, and Red

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have those going from the receptacle from the one switch to the other you should have what you need to connect the two switches to each other. You’d probably have additional wires coming in from the main power on the first switch and another set leaving the second switch going to thing you are switching, the load, though. Each house is different though so use caution and consult an electrician if you are unsure.

      @@reallyMello Thx for the reply. My situation is two switches on one wall controlling ceiling fan and light. The switch across the room only controls the light, and that's the one I'm trying to replace with the Treatlife 3-way smart switch. Incoming wires to the switch are red, black, white, and ground, and the new switch has two reds, one black, one white, and ground. Think maybe someone tied in the traveler with the neutral? Looks like I only have one traveler. Thanks

      Garth Mitton they are called wago wire connectors. Just started using them. Nice little time savers

      Hi Shivtopher, thanks for asking. The 3 way model shown here is not dimmable, but this one is th-cam.com/video/KU_m-YO9Oag/w-d-xo.html (it is not 3 way however)

      Hi Mark on this one as far as I am aware “Alexa turn ____ off/on” is all there is for voice commands though you can create routines as well

    Question for 3-way smart switch, do you have to have 2 smart switch??? or can you just install one and a regular 3 way switch.

    Mello, first of all thanks for the great video and all your responses to everyone. I gave you a like and subscribe. So now my question: I only have one traveler wire on both ends of my three way switch, leaving me with an empty traveler wire on the switch. Any ideas on how to make it work? I also realize this is an almost 3 year old video, so if I don't get a response, my feelings won't be hurt.

      Hi Kevin, I'm not familiar with that type of a setup so I wouldn't want to take a guess there. If you've figured it out let I'd love to know.

    You keep calling the boxes receptacles, which they are not. Also, you installed two Treatlife three-way switches in the same circuit, whereas Treatlife say you only need one. What's up?

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn’t hurt anything to use both but yes you only need one to control the circuit

    Can I install one three way Treatlife and one standard Treatlife switch or do both switches have to be threeway?

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jim Kok thanks for the question! Yes, you don’t need to use both smart switches on the same circuit. One is fine. The other switch can be a normal (non smart) three way switch.

    dislike because you say "Alexa" loud. Mute when you Alexa , or say "lady A" or " madam A" or something else.
