I bought a 2010 Genesis Coupe in Grand Touring trim in 2010. I was going through a divorce and could no longer afford the Infiniti G37 convertible that was going to be my next car. I loved that Genesis coupe. Five years later, I traded it in on a G37 convertible and regretted it within a year. It's far from being the objectively best car I've ever owned, but it may be my favorite. I do not think that they were trying to make it a luxury car. I don't think they knew quite what they were doing with the Genesis nameplate yet when they put out a luxury sedan and a sports coupe with the same name. Though not quite real luxury, the sedan's interior was way, way, way better quality and materials than the coupe's.
@@AlexSchwartzATV On a year for year comparison, the Hyundai had better in-car tech a more modern looking cockpit, and after they updated the engine to direct injection, more power. It took until they replaced the G with the Q for the tech and interior to get updated. Since I got a convertible, I could feel the extra weight of that more than with any previous convertible I'd own.. When I started fighting small window leaks in the rain, I began thinking about what maintenance was going to be like on that hard top convertible. I've had a half dozen convertibles, but all the previous ones were soft tops.
I used to work at a Hyundai dealer and remember this thing. A shame not many customers owned them. Usually if someone brought one in it was an automatic :/ Same thing now with the latest Veloster
Hyundai's traction control is intrusive on all their cars. My gf's Accent's traction control is unreal. Unusable in snow or slippery conditions. On another note, I've always had a soft spot for these. Generally considered them everything the FRS/BRZ wanted to be but no one bought them because Hyundai.
But the frs/brz is simple, light and has good handling characteristics. What this thing has over it in power it loses in aftermarket support, handling, and overall cheesiness.
i owned a 2.0T and wish i coulda kept it, but it was so impractical. and LOADS of fun. yeah the traction control was garbage. sometimes i'd break traction in a turn just for shits n giggles and it's just like mr. R said - it cuts power down to nothing. just nbd when you can just turn that shit off =D
I really want to like the gen coupe but whenever I see the interior it looks just like every other hyundai on the inside. Having to stare at the hyundai badge on the steering wheel would kill any joy i’d get from driving it.
This critique is exactly mine. I replaced the clutch pedal rod with an adjustable one, and that solved a bunch the issue for me. Also, the drive by wire lag can be eliminated with a potent booster that adjusts the throttle curve of you gas pedal.
I got my Genesis coupe r spec a couple months, exactly like the one in this video and it’s been a dream. Turning off the stability and traction really shows the true power this car holds and it’s just a perfect car to have fun in, MPG for me personally hasn’t been too bad, I mean if you’re getting a sports car MPG is the last of your worries. I’ve had so many people compliment my car thinking it’s some brand new 2023 car so the design is definitely the strong point and it’s reliability is pretty decent if you’re not abusing it every single time you drive it. If you’re interested in getting a Genesis coupe, I say go for it, they’re cheap and fun as hell, you really can’t wrong with this car
The genesis sedans are everything Infiniti wishes they could be, you didnt see that before but we all see it now Also forgetting about the tau v8 making 429hp
Owned my 2010 3.8 GT since 2012 and I still love it. Incredibly reliable, fun to drive and I can still get my daughter in the back seat in her car seat. At the time the engine was great and after all these years, I'd rather invest 18K into a brand new LS3, T56 swap and keep it another 8 years rather than spend 50+K into a car docked out with driver aids and other electronic bull shit. With a class 1 I don't drive like a 16 year old anymore so a solid bump in power to keep it fun is all I want in a car. Everyone has their opinion, but if it's not their car, who gives a shit.
0:45 "The Genesis sedan is for someone who can't afford an Infiniti" This comment wasn't even applicable in 2016, nevermind today. Infiniti will always sell cheaper than Genesis (gotta love Nissan and their fleet sales and endless rebates), with worse depreciation, and will likely die in less than a couple years.
Infiniti/Nissan RWD-based vehicles are actually VERY good cars. G37, Q40, Q50, Q60, QX80, Armada, Titan, Frontier, 370Z and GT-R are long-lasting, durable vehicles. A G37 Coupe does have much better resale than a Genesis Coupe, but is still cheaper than a Lexus RC350. 3.7 based cars also have the luxury of a plethora of power-adders that no other Asian coupe (aside from FR-S, but they are weak) has available to them. Now, if you want to say "All Nissan FWD-based CVT vehicles are utter garbage" I'd agree with you 100% ! Nissan makes some SHIT cars!
I put a throttle controller on mine and it completely eliminated the throttle lag and made it so much peppier, much better with it. I've owned mine about 8 months now and it's been great, no issues. I wish it got more recognition for what it is. It's a great coupe!

On the topic of E- traction - I remember the mk4 GTI, when you'd be eye to eye at a stoplight, give it the beans without turning off the ESC, then a wild patch of sand slips a wheel and takes away your power for a solid 3-4 seconds. those were the days , haha. that blasted ESC button, got me so many times
That, and the Genesis makes that power without any turbos. Though the Supra now makes 382 horsepower and I have to wonder if it was already making more than 335 horsepower to begin with.
@@EpicB BMW always puts lower official power numbers to make their cars seem superior to other cars with the same figure. It's a common practice in the performance car industry but BMW is absolutely notorious for it.
8:49 - I disagree about the ideal triple-gauge setup for a naturally-aspirated engine. Oil Pressure, Volts, and Water Temperature are not useful on modern cars, because those systems are all "good enough or not good enough" which can be indicated with simple dashboard warning lights. The ideal setup is Vacuum, Ignition Timing, and Fuel Pressure, because those are the systems that are most likely to manifest problems _only while the car is moving,_ so you can't always diagnose them under the hood in your driveway.

It came with a box to reflash the ecu to a 20lb boost tune any time and revert to stock for emissions test. Also came with a spare water pump, spare brake pads, a performance clutch to handle the extra power from the tune, and a boost gauge I can install. It was a huge step up from my 94 Celica. Brembo brakes, 19" wheels, sticky pilot ss tires, lower performance suspension, 6 speed manual, and a limited slip diff. Is it the most perfect sports car ever? No of course not. But for the price I got it for I couldn't be more happy. 20lb of boost and bolt ons really wake up the first gen 2.0t

I’ve had my 2016 3.8 for almost 2 years. Driven over 30k miles. I love it. It’s not the fastest and the throttle response is poor but it’s still fun. In stock form, they look kinda odd, but once tastefully modded, they look amazing.
Shit man when I heard 16mpg, I lost what excitement I had. That's inexcusable for a car that age, that size and that shape... idc what motor you stick in it.
I have the first Gen 3.8. Great car, but a few notes to any perspective owners. First Gen R-Specs are super bare bones. No Cruise control, manual only, no interior options, no sound dampening. You still get the Brembos, LSD and the great driving Dynamics. The make a bit less power, but are still great fun. Maintenance wise, it's pretty easy. Tire sizes are hard to find in my area, so you might need to order tires or think about swapping wheels and tires. The biggest issue is the Clutch. It's very reliable, but when it does go out (mine lasted 100K), it is expensive if you go to Hyundai for it. The stock Clutch/Flywheel/Pressure Plate assembly is over $3000! The good news is you can get an Aftermarket street/track clutch kit with an ultra low mass flywheel for like $700, and the actual swap is easy enough. Plus the aftermarket kit feels so much better than the stock setup.
Glad to see my daily driver model being reviewed! Mine is a 2016. And you’re right about the clutch. It was my first manual to learn on and I FEARED stalling after a stop.

What did you like more about the gen over the g37?
@@AlexSchwartzATV On a year for year comparison, the Hyundai had better in-car tech a more modern looking cockpit, and after they updated the engine to direct injection, more power. It took until they replaced the G with the Q for the tech and interior to get updated. Since I got a convertible, I could feel the extra weight of that more than with any previous convertible I'd own.. When I started fighting small window leaks in the rain, I began thinking about what maintenance was going to be like on that hard top convertible. I've had a half dozen convertibles, but all the previous ones were soft tops.
"Before this genesis went to see if could last longer than the band, or the console"
Damn
I found that statement perplexing. Both the group and the console lasted a LONG time.
Genesis brand going strong now still💪
I used to work at a Hyundai dealer and remember this thing.
Its suppose to be intrusive its not a variable traction control system like in exotics I dont know any economy car that is not intrusive..
TC sucks on most cars I just leave it off.

0:45 "The Genesis sedan is for someone who can't afford an Infiniti"
This comment wasn't even applicable in 2016, nevermind today. Infiniti will always sell cheaper than Genesis (gotta love Nissan and their fleet sales and endless rebates), with worse depreciation, and will likely die in less than a couple years.
I drove the G37 as well as a A6 and was more impressed with the 2015 Genesis 5.0 sedan. RegularCarReviews comments are misplaced.

Oil pressure first, then temp if you really need it. When oil pressure is low at driving RPM, it's hot.

Supra HP: 335
Supra Torque: 365

8:49 - I disagree about the ideal triple-gauge setup for a naturally-aspirated engine. Oil Pressure, Volts, and Water Temperature are not useful on modern cars, because those systems are all "good enough or not good enough" which can be indicated with simple dashboard warning lights. The ideal setup is Vacuum, Ignition Timing, and Fuel Pressure, because those are the systems that are most likely to manifest problems _only while the car is moving,_ so you can't always diagnose them under the hood in your driveway.
