Don't love the shape that was left on the jacket but do love the result in the texture, I think that doing this treatment in plain leather and then doing something from scratch with the "fabric" would be the way to go since the pattern wouldn't change

yess agreed that it's a bit hard to apply this to upcycling... may be I will turn this jacket into a corset at some point because the shape is little much hehe

Underrated channel. This looks cool. I’m not great at chemistry but I wonder if this has a neutralizer? To stop further shrinkage for more controlled fabric manipulation

Thank you! someone posted some kind of dry cleaning info about how to undo this but i cannot find the comment back ... I put it in chat GPT and vinegar will break calcium chloride down it says, so i guess its worth a test! also someone commented to thicken it with gelatin which is clever but probably will take even more time to get results.

I looked up how to reverse this (in case you want to start over if you don't like the result) and found this on a leather cleaning forum:
*To restretch the leather and remove the calcium chloride follow these steps:*
The dehydrated/stiff leather will need to be pH balanced of pH overexposure from the alkaline/base calcium chloride as the first step, follows up with hydration and fatliquor reconditioning to return to pre-damaged condition. The first step is to pH balance the alkaline/base calcium chloride overexposure. The second step is to hydrate and relax the leather shrinkage back to its pre-damaged condition. The third step is to recondition or replenished the leached-out fatliquor (fat and oil) so that when dry will return to its pre-damaged leather softness with strength.
    *Cleaning:*
    1) Prep-4.4 (optional)
    2) Cleaner-3.8
    3) Rinse-3.0
    *Conditioning:*
    4) Acidifier-2.0
    5) Hydrator-3.3
    6) Fatliquor-5.0
    *Protection:*
    7) Protector-B+
The leather has to be fully wet, if Hydrator-3.3 is not enough, you may use distilled water to fully relax the leather, stretched in shape prior to Fatliquor-5.0. Any surface residue from Fatliquor-5.0 is wiped with Hydrator-3.3 prior to Protector-B+.
    *Tips:*
Use only distilled water to wet it.
Shape it up and leave it to slowly dry away from any heat source.
    Inspect regularly for mold growth.
    *Why does this work?*
Leather has a pH value between 3 to 5. Calcium chloride is a base/alkaline that has a strong pH value higher than leather, thus causing the amphoteric leather protein fiber to lose its ionic positive (+ve) hydrogen bonding attraction with its other ionic negative (-ve) constituents and in this case, is the leaching out of the fat and oil content that causes the shrinkage.
When the tanning migrates from the center of alkaline overexposure, it may feel tacky and a good pH-balanced leather will feels squeaky, as a sign of healthy leather just like any fresh protein, be it fish or meat. This pH balancing is performed mainly by Acidifier-2.0 after a good cleaning depending on the soiling condition of the leather.
*Why the need to hydrate dehydrated/stiff leathers?*
Hydration performs the relaxing of the leather structure where each fibril is plumped and separated to return the leather to its pre-damaged dimension. Hydration with Hydrator-3.3 will also open up fibril sites ready for fatliquoring.
*Why the need for fatliquoring or fat and oil replenishing?*
Fatliquor (fat and oil) is the lifeblood of leather! Without the fat that plumps the leather for fullness and the oil that lubricates the millions of hinge-like connections for softness and strength, stiff leather remains useless and will crack or tear when flexed. You may need an individual product like Acidifier-2.0.

Oh wow! sounds a lot more complicated to reverse it though.. I am curious if this will fully be reversible, even the color changed so it looks like there could be some marks left. But good to know should I have more accidents.. haha. I suppose I rather upcycle this further than spending days undoing though. When things are looking a little weird I usually find some challenge in it again 💜

@@PeerCoxFashionRecthis technique works because of calcium chloride’s effect on the proteins in the leather, and gelatin is protein based. It’s worth a try-just know it might react with the calcium chloride and have a different effect on the leather by the time it can sink in.

when i look up de humidity pills, it gives me these little silica gel packs ? Calcium chloride is used for beer making aswell i see, that might work aswell. i think i'll try that

    • @PeerCoxFashionRec
      @PeerCoxFashionRec  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, they might have the same effect but I am not sure. The calcium chloride is sold in big bags or per kg online and is really affordable. Here it's sold in stores in autumn as well to melt snow or use as dehumidifier.

I think it may look better on a pair of leather pants ;) But instead of doing this on the pants do it on a piece of leather then add it to the pants. Butt patches or knee patches, the pocket. Google quilted leather for some inspiration 😉
