    Thanks for joining me in this mycelium fabric experiment! Which of the three substrates-paper, hardwood, or coir-do you think will produce the best leather-like material? And if you have any other sustainable substrate ideas, drop them in the comments! I’m excited to see how these different methods turn out and hear what you all think about mycelium as a potential alternative to traditional leather. 🌱🍄 I can't wait to craft my own flatcap 🪡

      I should be updating this series soon. The paper didn't work out entirely well so far, maybe the species wasn't suited well for it. The sheets however are growing at least one of them, I checked last week. 🍄🍄

    Great video! I'm planning to experiment with Myc leather soon

    {Stares at her office paper shredder with her left eye, watches this video with her right eye and gazes at her various grows with her 3rd eye} Ughhh, like I need another project right now. Though I am super curious if this is a viable way of getting a little extra out of my Unicorn bags after colonizing in them - taping over the air filter, loading them with paper/coir/hw, forming them right in the bag and seeing if whatever itty bitty myc in the bags is enough to do it. Not that I know what I'd do with a supply of mycofiber, but I'll keep following and maybe give it a shot next time.

      @@eschient You definitely need another project right now! Let's see if I can streamline the process a little more to make it easier to follow and replicate yourself. 🍄📃

    Hi, Leather familiar dude here.... Uh, tanning is a bit of a interesting process, but furthermore have you considered that the structure and texture might need some sort of Melting binder to make it closer to the real thing?

    • @TheFungiFilesSC
      @TheFungiFilesSC  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@bravojr absolutely. Some people have used beeswax in the curing process to accomplish this, and I believe that having a heat press to help form and press out the moisture and compress the material may be a huge step in processing it.

      One factor to consider is that leather today isn’t all tanned the same way. Mass produced leather for cars are probably chrome tanned but I do remember a video in Missouri maybe that still uses veg tan 100% for their leather and still make leather pieces for harnesses etc for heavy duty applications like draft horses using thicker bull hide.
      Then ya got buckskin brain tanned stuff that’s supposed to be soft but is bad if it gets wet.
      In veg tanning you use tannins. I suppose someone would have to see if tannins could be used in mushrooms maybe? Idk. It’s one thing to have a decor type briefcase or backpack or jacket in the city but I am not convinced that mushroom material could replace leather for the construction of saddles or gloves or reins for horses etc. maybe mushroom material is durable but I’ve never seen videos showcasing that.

    Anyone can make amadou at home, if you live in a temperate climate, those hard, chicken of the wood mushrooms, I don’t even know their name, can be sliced up and stretched out with minimal processing. Tools are a good blade and light hammer. One of my aunts used to make little decorations with them.

      I've seen them called horse-hoof mushroom. Chicken of the woods is a different one. And edible, actually!

      @ yeah, I knew they were different. Darker and hard. When I was a kid, they used to send me out to gather them, then my parents sorted by species.

      I've seen that! I'm pretty sure that's how Stamets hat is made. I'll have to find some to work on this as a foraged alternative. Thank you!

      @@tobiastho9639 of course! That's why we're not using it for fruiting bodies we wouldn't want anything to leech. We'll just be using this to grow the mycelium and make our leather sheets. 🍄📃

    Maybe wear latex gloves to prevent contamination and keep clean hands?

    • @TheFungiFilesSC
      @TheFungiFilesSC  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tobiastho9639 Personally, I use my gloves for Agar work and spawn work. Id hate to waste more plastic just to innoculate a simple project like this. I thoroughly washed before and after, and everything is non nutritious so for contam there's not much for it to thrive off of, but doesn't mean the chance is 0. I still did this all in open air. I will say the paper mycellium is growing strong with no signs of contam! The two sheets I won't be opening for at least a week.

      I assume it was for demonstration purposes but seeing an open agar container in open air made me clench lol
