    This is a very important video. These Reddit accusations remind me of tumblr posts accusing TH-camrs of rape or sexual assault with no basis or police investigation just to destroy their reputations. This is the same case here. There is a lot of bad blood and drama between developers and some of them resort to these tactics. Innocent until proven guilty.

    • @techlore
      @techlore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @tom spark I think the discrepancy lies in what we are debating. Lots of accusations thrown at these VPNs have to do with the fundamental basics of company management and the technical description of their service. It’s fair to question random accusations with little backing, as it’s pointlessly attacking a service for no reason.
      The Hated Ones video discussing what VPNs do and don’t do is accurate in the sense of not trusting a majority of services to keep your data safe in the scenario where you’re wanted, as you’re only as strong as your weakest link, and a VPN would likely be a weak link if you’re over-reliant on it. So yes, assume VPNs will log, but there’s no issue with an “innocent until proven guilty” mentality behind a claim that a reputable company is somehow based in Lithuania.

    • @TheHatedOne
      @TheHatedOne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@techlore Thank you for your answer to this. There is absolutely no contradiction on my part. I made my video as a technical clarification for people to understand what VPNs are and aren't good for. I see it way too many times where people think using a VPN alone can protect them from Google trackers. This is simply not true and people should understand what they can expect from a VPN - that is privacy by policy, and not privacy by design (as would be with a correct PGP implementation in an instant messenger for example). It's a completely different topic than what Techlore's video is about.
      I am glad that Techlore covered these accusations. A nuanced view on this was crucially important.

    • @satibel
      @satibel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In case of security software, I treat them as guilty until proved innocent, i.e. won't use them unless they are open source, and I can check they can't (not won't).

    I bought a 3-year subscription from Nord VPN, back in 2018, by 2019 I went 5 months without service. Mind you that I live in China and use VPNs daily. During this time, I had to rely on free vpns, and other stand-alone proxies which work 99% of the time. Long story short, every time I contacted customer service, I was given the same answer for 5 months straight, which was “NO REFUNDS AFTER THE TRIAL PERIOD” and that their technicians were working on resolving the issue. In the end, they got the service back and running with a few glitches here and there, but no refunds nor credits.

      Because some of these services only want people to use them for encryption purposes . They dont want to take on government entities . Services like Proton and Nord take on governments . Services based in the US such as IP Vanish dont want to be in that sticky business .

    • @apophis5213
      @apophis5213 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Richard Vaughn Not True . The US has no mandatory logging policies like people think they do . The whole commotion about ISP's tracking what you do is there agenda , not the governments . The government just ruled that its legal for them to do so if they so desire - which they do . The fact that the government can use the said logs is just a benefit to that fact . The VPN PIA is a prime example of this . They have been taken to court not once but TWICE . However , in the US it is true that they can start forcing them to log connections for specific people , but in the end that is just fruitless in most cases . Its also true that they can make them not say anything . That is they reason PIA does not have a warrant canary unlike other VPNs' .

    • @apophis5213
      @apophis5213 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Richard Vaughn Even if they capture all the data , that does not mean they can decrypt it . Nothing is 100% secure on the internet . The question is how much effort is your opponent going to go threw to compromise you . There is a reason governments want encryption outlawed again . Just a few decades ago encryption technologies were considered munitions , and regulated as such . I recommend you look up a channel called " The Hated One ." You will learn a lot about privacy and security and what is and is not practical .

    My ISP is throttling my VPN's IP's one by one, and I have confirmed they are invading my privacy. Oh well, I'll start browsing grotesque porn sites and make them watch. Proof is my VPN was shutting on and off, they do this in case you don't have an internet kill switch enabled, hoping your data will leak out while you connect to your VPN's server or just get frustrated stop using it, I know this because when I disabled my VPN and played Fortnite I noticed my connection was going on and off like my VPN was i then connected to my VPN and a different country and the 'on and off" throttling immediately disappeared, they obviously got my Fortnite connection confused with my VPN. I might not even be able to play videogames anymore online since they may inevitably throttle the servers I connect to, thinking it's a VPN.
