    Back in 1996, I cycled from Missoula to Edmonton. Seeing these videos brings me back immediately to those mountains. The rockies are majestic and a video is hardly capable to capture the shear beauty and size. Staying at campgrounds in small little tents brought me even closer to nature. Great friendships were build with other cyclist. Cycling these mountains you inhale the scenery in a nice flow that I will never forget. Thanks for making and publishing this video. It brings back joy and smiles!

    This is spectacular! This is probably the best video I've seen of Glacier Nat'l Park. Just the scenery, facts and what we're interested in. No whining, no endless shots of yourself or annoying music. Thank you!

    This is one of the most informative educational videos about any park I have ever seen. Steve Salis (the videographer) must have been a teacher before. His video is like a very well composed course on the history and landscape of Glacier Park. He is really incredible. I can't think of any park video done so well, and I live and breath these types of videos.

      Thanks very much! Yours is one of my favorite comments. No not a teacher- I have done quite a bit of instructional design for clients. I have a film degree and an MBA. Designing and project mgt of educational software, curriculum and other courseware for large corporate clients enabled me to afforded to write and produce and narrate every this passion project. All require just good story/info
      telling.

    In 2012 we’d made the trip to the West. We’d visited Yellowstone & Tetons NPs. It was GREAT, however it was the idea to go to Glacier for one day. Due limited time we didn’t and by seeing your video I’m regretting right now, however one day is not enough. So right now I have to plan separate trip to Glacier & Waterton to explore. Thx a lot for this amazing and inspiring video.

      Thanks for watching. FYI- after I visited last Oct. I updated this video with lots of new footage- also please note the park is overcrowded now. Long waits and traffic detract from the experience. Also, people are visiting the park for the wrong reason. Commenters have told me kids were loudly paddle boarding (without going through the required Zebra Mussel check) in Fishercap Lake and scaring away the moose. Commenters have also said kids were partying in the campgrounds and cabin areas in the wee hours- making hikes more difficult with little sleep.

      The West is Big! Travel Guides The chalet has a great view of the valley and you can see the Lake McDonald. Last week was unfortunately very hot but we experienced a thunderstorm on the mountain too 😂 one downside of the chalet (or the whole park) is bugs. I am not sure if there were that many bugs in the past.

    LOVE THIS!!
    Would you recommend staying in various locations in the park during the time you are there to avoid road travel to each side of the park? I will like to explore the whole park but do not want to spend most of the day driving back and forth to one hotel. Hope that makes sense. I loved the waterfalls at the beginning. So good!

    • @dannylandrum7899
      @dannylandrum7899 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you could certainly do that. Spend a day or 2 or 3 on the west side (in Columbia Falls / West Glacier / Hungry Horse / Coram / Apgar / Lake McDonald Lodge / Polebridge) for the west and NW sides, then spend a few days in East Glacier or Two Medicine Lodge for the SE and S sides, then spend a few days in St. Mary or Many Glacier to explore the NE and east sides. Then if you have more time and a passport, spend a day or two up at Waterton.

    • @TheWestisBig
      @TheWestisBig  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Staying in each of the areas is a good idea. The park is so crowded now in the summer its hard and time consuming to get from place to place and even harder to park. FYI- I usually fly into Calgary which is only a nice 3 hr drive from Many Glacier. Calgary is also only a 90 minute drive from the Canadian Rockies! If there is a prolong weather (or even a fire issue) you have the option of bailing and heading to Banff, YoHo and Jasper. And of course the fabulously named "Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump" is on the way.

      I went in March 2019. Everything past Lake McDonald was closed due to heavy snow, but we still enjoyed it so much we just went back in July 2020. Even now only half the park was open just past Logan Pass visitor center, all the east side is controlled by tribal government and closed the park due to 1 case of this thing going on..again, only did half the park but so worth it. Hopefully it's fully open by next summer so we can do the entire park. Even then you'd need years to completely see this park. So much to see. So much to hike. So beautiful. Dont wait too long, who knows where we'll be in the near future with all these shut downs.

    Hi Steve, we talked yesterday while you were testing the new Sony camera. I loved your video and thought that adding geological aspects would be useful especially when explaining the different layers in the rock strata. Also adding something about the native American that are local to the area might be a good addition. Keep up the good work. I have B&W pics taken in the summer of 1998 with Ilford FP4 in 6x7 format. If you respond with your email address, I can send these to you

    • @TheWestisBig
      @TheWestisBig  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I know they removed the info signs stating the glaciers would be gone by 2020. I talk about this in my "what to know before you go" video. I'll add this to my 93 min video with the next update which will be after covid19 is sorted out. FYI- if you're going to Glacier in the next month- call ahead! There are some changes you need to know about and the website is not being updated daily. For example, there willbe no hiker shuttles this year and Red Bus Tours will be Social Distanced so few riders on each bus. Also, some campgrounds closed all season and some cabins with no bathrooms also closed for the season.

Anything near fishercap lake as we want to see moose and bear(from a distance of course). I’m a wildlife photographer so hoping to see as much as possible.

      Yes, there are 26 glaciers still in the park. It seems the “expert” climate alarmists were wrong again-. The glaciers will be there for many years to come- likely many decades. Though there are still a few info signs in the park stating "All the Glaciers will be gone by 2020." Btw- several of my videos on the park have been updated. When i updated this video last year that reference slipped by. My next update to this video will be released soon. .

      The roads are only open for a few summer months- as determined by the weather. The park lodges and even private hotels etc are only open during the summer months. Of course there are hotels in the West side towns year round.

    What people don't realize is that a mama moose with a fawn is MORE dangerous than a brownie sow with cubs, and a brownie sow is quite dangerous. Also, more importantly, as someone who lives here and hikes the park a lot, beware that it is *very* "Darwin-friendly", meaning that it's very easy to fall and die - very few barriers on cliffs, so take extra special care, particularly with kids and elderly, and especially on the highline / haystack trail. People die every year up here from falls - way way more than from bears or other wildlife.
