This is truly an incredible production. Also, the fact that three of the principals are a G&S expert (Dennis Olsen), a musical theatre star (Anthony Warlow), and an operatic legend (Dame Heather Begg) really shows how broad of an appeal Gilbert and Sullivan can have.
Heather Begg on the bass is just priceless ... she was taught to play it by the late principal bass of the opera orchestra, the wonderful Aloha Hunter (r.i.p.)
This particular production was borrowed from the English National Opera, originally staged in 1969, ten years before this Australian Opera performance.
The sound quality is so much better than so many other Gilbert and Sullivan videos. Many Thanks....but on the other hand...“This particularly rapid, unintelligible patter Isn't generally heard, and if it is it doesn't matter."
Thank you so much for this, SIER101, I really appreciate you taking the time to upload this :) I personally prefer the The 1961 D'Oyly Carte Patience *recording* but this particular performance was the best one that I've ever _seen_ hands down. Just so fun too watch and excruciatingly witty even if the singing could be better in some parts. Thank you again! :)
My college had a theater group that mainly did G&S plays. They did a production of Patience that replaced the aestheticism with existentialism, and it was hilarious. I wish it had been recorded.
This production is borrowed from the English National Opera's 1969 production. If the DVD to which you refer is the Brent Walker television version, that, too, was based on the ENO, but reblocked for camera in studio rather than a stage with a proscenium. Personally, I prefer the ENO choreography and set to the more mobile version for TV. Both casts give great performances.
I saw a production of this long ago and wasn't sure what I was seeing. Best I could understand is that G and S were making fun of posers. Everyone in the play is more or less a poser pretending to be something they aren't for status and to get attention from the opposite sex. Bunthorne pretends to be a poet to attract the lovesick maidens but secretly hates poetry. He loves Patience but she hates poetry. Then it all go downs a rabbit hole with everyone deciding that if they are a good match then it can't be because true love is boring and tortured love is hip. Sadly not much has changed since the 1800s.
That you for uploading this, but the audio needs to be processed a little. It sounds very squeaky and tinny. I'm sure you can run this through an audio processor to clean it up and finally do this masterpiece justice.
Why was this my opening podcast the day after my adopted family's mother figure became possessed?! They're all "praying" for her, I hope that an exorcism happens asap. And then here is.... "Patience"!?😂
this production is WHY i love gilbert and sullivan....it really goes all the way with it
Best performance on the net
Yes I quite agree with you. Definitely the best version of Patience I've ever seen or heard, on the net.
As usual with the Australia Opera‘s performances

Great production and wonderful show. I'm playing the Duke in a production here in Israel. We're opening tomorrow.

I remember Heather Begg when I was at school at St Marys College in Auckland New Zealand 🇳🇿, what a wonderful voice.
I can't express how happy I am this is up!! ❤
Brilliant production. Wish I could have been there in person.
This is a near-perfect version , throughly recommended.
Always enjoy the Australian Opera productions.

@@kevinwachs5905 Thank you. Always glad to learn.
Wow! What a great production -- the best I've seen!
Thank you for uploading this.
Fantastic production!
Yessssssss! Finally this full version is on the net again! Thanks a ton
I am crazy for the whole thing, but I am absolutely bananas for the BRILLIANT set design!

Thank you so much for your upload! This is one of my favorite G&S
Wonderful!

Wonderful memories of school production!

NGL, I could totally see Chris Lilley playing Bunthorne - it would definitely give new meaning to Patience's mention of "ecstasy".
First time watching/listening - this is great!
That girl with the cymbals is KILLING me 😂😂😂😂
Rest in Peace, Richard Gill!
Searched for this from Chariots of Fire. Thankya
fine performance...thank you! Opera Australia's version is almost as good as the DVD.

Absolutely wonderful. Truly funny. How many pieces well over a hundred years old hold up like Gilbert & Sullivan?
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!

Perfect production, even if Lady Jane really did floor Bunthorne! Why h aven't I watched it before?
Great
She went for the - Duke
Played the part of Colonel Calvery.
2:03:20 Oh, he got her good!!
I saw them both in various G&S productions, in which she whacks him on the back. This was hilarious.
Why was this my opening podcast the day after my adopted family's mother figure became possessed?!
They're all "praying" for her, I hope that an exorcism happens asap.
And then here is....
"Patience"!?😂
Lady Jane is too pretty and for some reason she hasn't dyed her hair gray
1:34:55 Tell that to Rose Maybud!
Whatever accent is that?
The performance by the actor who plays Patience is too exaggerated and terrible
Of course, you are entitled to have your own opinion but I think she is brilliant!
51:00That there's quite a short tunic that what's-his-name is wearing!
