Dear Guy, thank you for making the process of composing music so fascinating and so easy to understand! Today in your Italian melody I even heard Russian folklore motives! I really enjoy watching your videos and so does my mum! I just got interested in creating piano music and I would love to show you my miserable attempts to do it, if possible!

I am truly honored that you came to my country! I am an organist and composer, I live in Milan but I am from Puglia (a riot of sounds, colors, dances, rhythms .... and fabulous food!). I met Morricone when I was a child, in the conservatory, an exceptional person and musician! I hope to meet you personally one day, for now I follow you on your TH-cam channel! Have a good day, and good music!

Nice composition, Guy! Thanks for sharing with us. Also, I have the same little AKAI LPK25 controller and it served me well in the past...until I got the bigger MPK49. My favourite Morricone soundtrack has to be "Once Upon A Time In The West" what a combination - Sergio Leone, Ennio Morricone...and Charles Bronson on the trail of Henry Fonda!

Just bought one of those little things myself for the holidays. It's not quite the 88 keys or a grand piano but it's a fun piece of cheap kit that gives you access to all the cool sample libraries. It's certainly better than a comb and paper...

M-Audio keystation mini is a great little keyboard to use when travelling. It has a volume knob that you can reassign as a mod wheel to get all the expression you want! Works better than the buttons for mod and pitch bend that comes on the controller.

Award winning composer might be the most relevant part... mini keyboard, Mac, location are all very jolly .. don’t believe for a second that what you are watching is about enabling technology it’s about decades of musical training .. although the internet likes to make us feel everything is so accessible, easy and short circuited .. to get to where Guy is so it looks this simple takes a lifetime of work.

Nice to remember Ennio Morricone. I sometimes have to remind myself that early film composers played 'live' in the cinema on a piano , manipulating themes and cliches for silent movies. Ennio was a master of using themes using limited resources, possibly THE master and in a way.. sometimes you can have too much equipment when actually all you need to do is focus on the music.

  • @FredsGratisScores

For a small keyboard, I use the Akai MPK mini play. It has a similar 2-octave small-sized keyboard but it also has 8 assignable drumpads and 4 assignable rotary controllers. I have the drum-pads assigned to the bottom (dusty) end of the keyboard so you can select legato/sostenato etc if you have the BBC Discover installed on your computer. I assign the rotary controllers to CC7/11 etc so I can control the Volume/Expression on the fly. Plus, it also has some internal sounds so you can use it on its own. The sounds are a bit cheesy but it's good if you need to practise without computer.

Thank you Guy, the music was a perfect match with the breathtaking views and reminded me of my home country 🇮🇹
This is also the good example that one doesn’t need a lot of equipment to compose great music but just a few things and, most important, their creativity :)
Definitely a special tribute to Ennio and to Italy!

I have a 32-key mini that I normally use as a standalone, the F3-C6 range is enough to stay within the sweetspot of most instruments with octave transpose. Many only have a two-octave sweetspot in register; F3-F5 or C4-C6.

Korg Nano-Key Studio is AWESOME but no sustain pedal. It has a touch pad for XY or Mod and Pitch. I thought the unorthodox keys were a deal breaker. I was wrong. I love this and it is by far my most used Keyboard if I am not playing two hands.

Love it! Italy looks beautiful, and I'm so impressed you can make that music on 25 keys! I'm waiting for the music industry to come out with something 88 keys and carry on size that you can put in a backpack while traveling the world. Yet still velocity sensitive, sustain pedal, and fit for a concert pianist, without lugging your heavy midi controller through cobblestone streets waking up the whole neighborhood when you arrive lol. Thanks for this amazing video!

The Akai LPK 25 (3.8" x 13.4" x 1.1") is an excellent conventional choice for a traveling keyboard! An unconventional choice to consider would be the Novation Launchpad mini (7.1" x 7.1" x .56"). The Launchpad isn't as robust as the Ableton Push 2 pad controller (18.8" x 14.29" x 4.37") but it does the job as a pad style controller pretty well for basic work on vacay (Ableton's Push products were made for Live and I'm unsure if Push 2 works with traditional legacy DAWs like Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, Fruity Loops, et al.)

Yup, same thing happens to me; I psych myself up (or "out," as it were) when I am playing in at particular timings. The very first time I hit record at the start of a new project, I usually don't start playing until bar 5 or 6 (as opposed to bar 1 or 2) because it takes me those extra few bars to get myself prepped.

Hi Guy, love the channel. Logic records all the MIDI events even if you're not in record status. There is a function called "capture record" with which you just can start the music, play whatever comes to mind, stop and get the whole performance since the last time you pressed play as a MIDI region. You can get the Button for that by customizing the transport bar.
Since I am always pressured as soon as the "red light is on" this helped me out a lot.
