  • Everyone knows the United States is made up of fifty states with their unchanging borders. There are hardly any examples of a state seceding from another successfully. But that doesn't stop places from trying! In this episode, we talk about the history of the Long Island statehood movement!

    As a Long Islander, my proposal is to actually cut Westchester in half, on a line continuing from the northern corner of CT's panhandle to the Hudson River. We, NYC, and southern Westchester then boot the rest of upstate out. Dpwnstate stays New York, Upstate becomes the 51st state of Erie. The one thread I keep finding on my travels is that almost everyone south of that line hates paying for Upstate's roads etc, and everyone north of that line hates having NYC and its suburbs impose social policies like gun control on them.

    • @spelticup
      @spelticup  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This will likely never happen though, especially since the major cities upstate would be upset from that. In reality all parts of the state benefit from the arrangement. For instance, NYC gets its water from upstate.
      It's fun to think about, but likely not practical.

    • @secondarycontainment4727
      @secondarycontainment4727 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, if you saw the conditions of the streets in upstate - you would wonder where all the money goes. It sure isn't to MENTAL HEALTH issues.

      @@spelticup True, Syracuse and Binghamton would be pretty pissed to be outside the Empire State, and have to deal with the massive red shift that an independent Upstate would take politically. NYC's water is a problem though, we've been destroying aquifers and resevoirs from the Hamptons to the Catskills, desalination might have to happen with or without independence.

    Alrighty, here’s my opinion on which states should exist in the future:
    -puerto Rico
    -Guam
    -long island
    -northern Mariana islands
    -U.S Virgin Islands
    -American Samoa
    -north California
    -Washington DC
    And here’s a few more outlandish ones that I’d like to see:
    -Quebec
    -Taiwan
    With all of these, it would bring the US’s state number up to 60 without any need of invasion! (The two outlandish ones actually have support for American annexation, but in reality it would be unlikely to happen)

    • @spelticup
      @spelticup  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I doubt any of those outlandish ones will happen (and Long Island should also be considered outlandish). Ultimately the "nothing ever happens" camp usually wins, but I think Puerto Rico would be a great addition

    I'm from Connecticut, the south east part of the state and can see Long Island from my house. If they make Long Island a state, it would only to be concentrate taxes within the Island and of course line the pockets of any politician that runs it . Because of it's location means they will keep the taxes the same or even raise it. There's no benefit to the residents on the island if they were to become a 51st state. Connecticut is the highest taxed state in the union partly because of it's proximity to New York City and Boston. I would expect the same results of a succession from New York. You can also bet on Brooklyn being the capital as it's the most populated part of the island. If you travel to the eastern side of the island, it's basically wine country with a small population. This move would really only benefit a handful of politicians running the show and it's a ridiculous reason for it to happen in the first place.

      It's the core issue of oUr DeMoCrAcY when the cities can vote to steal everyone else's money. It's like in CT where all the state taxes go to be laundered in bridgeport, hartford and new haven; or into the rificulous pension systems that the people never got to vote for but are on the hook for forever.

      State Bird: The Seagull
      State Anthem: "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant"
      State Flower: The Cattail
      The Ducks will join the MLB; we'll erect statues along the LIE of our great icons like: Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Joel, Alec Baldwin, Rosie O'Donnell, Bill O'Reilly, and who could forget that guy from King of Queens!
      We'll turn MacArthur into something to rival LaGuardia-- New York spent $8 billion over 9 years? HA! We can do better! I say $13 billion over 15 years!
      Our license plate will have the Big Duck and a big 🖕to show the rest of the country we don't duck around! The Governor will deploy the state guard to Central Islip and Brentwood-- a man with a plan! We can invite the Gambino's to run the Comptroller, and the Lucchese's can keep collecting our trash! The children will learn of our rich and deep state history, how our ancestors fled from the rotting sewers of New York City in the distant 1970's. How glorious it could be, our precious Long Island State, free from the tyranny of Manhattan & Albany. But what do I most look forward to? WE CAN FINALLY PAVE THE GOD DAMNED ROADS!!!

      @@spelticup At least you kept the original flag design mostly intact with just that star change. I wouldn't blame you for finding the colors actually being a little harsh on the eyes. The stars being intricate it's what makes it so. People however on the internet are always trying to "beat" the original with vastly different designs. They're always overly designed and or just garbage.
      Long island will become a state someday maybe soon or later. Upstate will too definitely. Because when you get to peek into what's going on in the state you truly see why it goes by the title of the empire state. It's basically NYC bullying the rest of the state. Just not on taxes but laws or policy. The State claims to love nature yet they buyout farms and forests and replace it with apartments and solar farms. Putting windmills on our ocean front. Trying to integrate Long island's power grid with NYC. Overdeveloped polluting the water supply and having Upstate provide with their own water. As of recently New York State/NYC is currently suing most of the state like 20+ counties including Suffolk because they're not wanting to provide their homeless shelters and thus relating resources meant for citizens and most importantly their residents. Because of NY's/NYC's own immigration policy having created a crisis with them using millions in tax money already.
