That was a particular way of speaking (and writing) cultivated for decades by news and sports reporters. It started with written news. The idea was to trim out the "unnecessary" words so that you could get more content into fewer column inches. This let you get more news (or news and ads) on a single page. It was thought that this would better keep the attention of the reader. Somewhat like TH-cam videos that fast-forward or cut over parts of a process that they think will be boring. I've seen a number of these Yesterday's Newsreels, and I have to admit that this one certainly stood out for the newscaster narration. I never really noticed it on any of the others I've seen, but boy, it sure is obvious here. This dialect, BTW, was the origin of the concept of "hard hitting" news. The idea was that you were punching the viewer in the face with the parts of the news that you considered important, and leaving out all of the rest.

Can someone please explain why the narration constantly misses out words from sentences, particularly the word “the”, thanks.
