While there is some truth to it. You can see many cases of better openings beating more popular animes, like Evangelion (from 1996) beating JJK which is the most popular anime right now. Kekkai Sensen beating One Piece. Black Clover beating Naruto. Haikyuu beating Demon Slayer and so on.

Some interesting results. FMA put up a fantastic result beating everything, besides Sign. Evangelion beating JJK was a good sign. Bye Bye Yesterday making it through was suprising. Blue bird being massacred was odd. And Aoi Shiori and Hadaka no Yuusha losing is just preposterous.
I thought there were a few upsets, but the fact that Black Catcher and Blue Bird wasn't tighter was the biggest surprise for me.
