No more $130, it's now $178.
Way too heavy for me. I’ll stick with my Maxlite5
@@lynnleipold2617 Also an inch too thick for most guidelines.
It's 189.00 now
6 Sep 2024 this bag is $189.99 for non-Prime shoppers!
At 8.5 pounds, it's pretty heavy if you want to keep total weight to about 17 pounds, about the weight some foreign airlines require for carry on. Otherwise, it will get checked...and it's even a bit too large for a lot of European airlines.
3.8 kg that’s more than half the 7 kg weight allowance. It’s too heavy.
My thoughts too. I'd travel with a half empty bag just to keep at the 7kg limit.
Everything old is new again! Kind of old school, like an old hard American Touristor!! I like this! Hope it holds up long term!
I've never owned a clamshell bag 🤷🏼♀️
I still use my parents' old American Tourister luggage tags from the 60s... back when people used to fly Pan Am 😅. I gave up my old latching lid suitcase when it got too big and heavy for me, or I suppose I should say I got too weak for it!. I miss it. My soft-sided carry-on bag is OK for the amount of use it gets. At least one side is deeper than the other 😊
I don’t want to be “That Person”….but…until clamshells hit the travel scene - a deep suitcase with a one-sided zip opening was the standard for a lot of luggage. Seems like simple physics that you can cram more stuff into one deep bin than two shallow bins….the hard-siders can take a bit more punishment on the road, but only if they are very well made…$$$$ !! I also love resale shop luggage…..IF it’s totally functional, the correct size for my trip and Does Not Stink!! I delude myself into thinking that old, beat-up luggage isn’t that enticing to a thief…but that’s just my fantasy - I am aware!!💕 Happy & safe travels to all!!!
You're not the only "that person." I was scrolling through the comments like, "does no one remember what suitcases used to look like?"
@@SDot2385 …no kidding!!! 💕
Joining the "That person" club too :) I always figured you either get clamshell vs top open (my preference is top open for how we access our luggage in hotels). Hearing the clamshell being called "traditional" made me feel really old at my 43 years on this Earth....lol. Although I don't usually see a hardshell with a top open, so in that respect, that is interesting and best of both worlds.
You that person. Me too
literally i was gonna say every suitcase my entire family has had for my whole life has been lid not clamshell.
Regarding unusual baggage colors: A friend of mine has bright purple luggage…she has had her underwear (just her underwear!) gone missing somewhere between her point of origin and destination twice now! I have had good luck with teal, it contrasts with all the black bags, but apparently doesn’t scream “steal my underwear”! 😂😊😂
… 😮😂
Funny and creepy!
lol that is quite a story! Maybe put them in a packing cube like I do and burry it!
@@alysmalls I’ll have to suggest that to her next time she flies!
😮😮😮
I always hated the clamshell design when it became the norm, hence why I still like my soft shell top opening ones. Just more compact and can lean the top lid against a wall, instead of having to spread out the clam shell on the ground. Thanks for sharing
Same here! I’m still using my top opening one from 11 years ago cuz I can’t find a good light top opening one anymore…
I love the top open style. Packing cubes are the game-changer that makes this style ver efficient for me. I love the look of this sturdier piece of luggage.
I find it cute that calls the clamshell "traditional." 😊
Top open design….AKA, what soft shell suitcases have been doing for ages! 😏. Long live the soft shells!
The cup holder!!! Omg!! As a parent, I have zero spare hands and always need to scoff a coffee so I have a hand free for kids lol. I love the simple stuff
I won’t buy a hard shell suitcase because they are too heavy and I don’t like spinners because they waste space and don’t handle cobblestones well. I do like the basic design, and as other people have pointed out, almost all luggage used to work like this.
The ones I've seen lately are very lightweight, but strong.
nowadays hard shell suitcases are much lighter than cloth counterparts, and very sturdy. they last pretty long.
I'm in total agreement about this style of bag. We use Travelpro Maxlite5 2 wheel bags, which have even more room than this. They're softsided but well built and really light, which is becoming a more important factor.
I use the 2-wheel Travelpro Maxlite5 as well. With international carry on weight often limited to 15 lbs/7kg every bit of weight saving helps.
What sized of travel pro do you suggest? I'm traveling to Miami and want to get their carryon but standard 21 is actually 23. I'm not sure it will easily fit in a regular overhead bin lifted by a female.
Yeh, I have a knockoff one of those. 2 wheels always beats spinners for capacity.
Travelpro is the goat! ❤
Finally, time to consider a hard shell 😊 will wait for Prime Day in 2 weeks!
I see that it is .5” too long for Air Canada and 1” too long for WestJet. I wonder how many suitcases does one need to buy to fit in the sizer for the few different airlines you fly with…and where the hell do you store them if you live in a condo!!?? How I wish for the old days of travel.😞
Ya it's weird! I mostly fly WJ (which is smaller than AC) and it fits fine as demo'd in the video lol. My most recent carry-on video shows and talks about this!
I live in a condo. I don’t have this carry on but my current one either lives under my bed or up on the top shelf in the closet.
My bag is about the same width (soft sided) and didn't fit in WJs sizer, and it wasnt overstuffed:(
They are getting very picky!
West Jet has introduced new rules for passengers. They have done away with the free carry on case. You can bring a “ personal” bag which must go under the seat in front. Otherwise you must pay to bring a carry on case onto the plane.
@@BenDorm that's incorrect, it's only for the ultra basic fare if someone chooses that option.
I have a similar case without the cup holder, but I LOVE the “lid” design like I had with some samsonite pieces back in the 90s
So deep… don’t you constantly have to unpack half of it to get to stuff?
Right. That's why the clamshell bags got so popular years ago.
All depends on your packing style!
Great review Ally. Thank you. I really love the top opening concept better. Finally a classic regular suitcase, with a durable outside. Cup holder genius !! The clamshells are a pain to open and close. I hope suitcase companies do come out with a set in this style and durable material. I hope it goes on sale for prime day 😊
I’ve been eyeing these for a while. It makes so much more sense. Usually your only choice for hard sides is a clamshell. And there are so many reasons I don’t like them. With this is much easier to access on the go if needed. Easier in a small hotel room, fits on hotel luggage stands, it’s easier to pack bulky items aka souvenirs 😂. I have not run into weight issues yet so I agree the weight might eventually be an issue. I keep hoping other companies start making these and they will get lighter.
Dagne Dover just released a new luggage bag and I believe it opens like this.
Lojel USA sells these. They are a higher end Japanese brand. It’s appropriately called the Cubo. These aren’t much heavier than any other hard side around the same size.
8.3 pounds is a little more than twice as heavy as my hardshell carry-on. I don’t mind the clamshell design, but the heaviness of that bag would be a deal-breaker on a lot of international flights with strict weight limits.
I always hated the clamshell design, never understood it!
its amazing what can fit in a good 20 inch carry on for a tropical destination you could easy pack for almost 2 weeks in a bag like that!
Totally!
It's 9.8 inches deep, the airline regulation is 9 inches, but it fits fine?
You gotta have a DAB (deep ass bin) LOL. I prefer this type of luggage as well. It is so much easier to pack and handle. I used to have a very large soft luggage suitcase and it had that design. Now I am a minimal packer and this one looks good. Thanks for your insight. 😁😁
Haha love me a DAB!
that top opening feature is the only way a hard shell suitcase makes sense to me
Everything old is new again. Deep cases use to be industry standard. Personally i love the trunk era... hanging area on one side, drawers on other side.
I love my travel pro carry on. I like to open the lid. Very easy to grab something I need at the airport. So much easier? Never understood why the middle zip was so popular lol. I travel a lot
clam shell is easier to organize.
It’s $189 US on Amazon in the US.
Seeing it for $160 on U.S. Amazon. The creator (who is clearly Canadian given her obvious accent and cadence) did the conversion correctly, it’s just more expensive now.
@@lawr17..but of course it’s more expensive now…. Over 150,000 folk have seen this video, and either ordered one from amazon or made a video about this suitcase and posted on youtube. 🥸
This is too big for carry internationally (most international carriers).
I like the suitcase you’re showing but its weight empty, puts me off.
The way you pronounce, "bag"... gives me Illinois/Minnesota vibes.
But, your use of "washroom" gives me Canadian vibes.
And, then you confirmed Canadian at the end. Land of the Maple Leaf!!! Woooo!
😁 Good video.
I prefer the clamshell since you won't have to dig deep into the suitcase, but it does take more space though, can be hard in some smaller hotel rooms like in Japan.
But in a clamshell luggage, I DON'T have to take everything out to reach for something I need mid flight. I am able to quickly open side and keep other side zippered up while I pull out my items.
Takes wider space to open though.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available for people in Europe. It looks like an awesome item, and I will need a new carry-on in a few months, but I can't seem to find anything about it for people outside of the American continent. :/
That is the BEST travel related item I've yet to see. I began using travel bags that really do make packing/travel easier. I'll try this suitcase. THANK YOU! 👍👍
Hopefully more companies will make this style, which looks so much saner than the clamshell, in accordance with their draconian size limits.
@@AnikanotevenUnfortunately, it fits and packs the same amount. Only real difference in capacity is the fact youre not limited to something that is 4 inches tall per side.
It’s too big for United’s carryon requirements.
did you watch the whole video? 2:53
Hard-shells are the way to go because you can wipe them down with disinfectant wipes after a flight and after a hotel 😊 I still like two separate sides but this one is cute.
Love your reviews I saw this in the Amazon store and loved the drink holder of all things. The bag reminds me of my beloved Motherlode with the way it opens. The Motherlode offers a bit more space in the top which is where I store sports equipment, water shoes, puffy jacket, umbrella, etc. stuff I rarely have to have and I love that. I jump between it and my Away bag but always bring my wheeled Jansport backpack as I often check the other bag on the way back and my carry-on must have wheels! XO, Kelly
I have been looking at these suitcases, so I’m glad you reviewed it. I’m so tired of the clamshell design. It just doesn’t make sense.
JUST ORDERED THIS BAG. I hope it arrives before Sunday. I'm hoping to use it on a flight and cruise. Thank you.
This lid at one side makes more sense than the two equal halves idea. Now this new concept is out, we will likely see a gradual takeover of this design from all brands.
Not a new design....but yeah
I’ve posted so many times how I refuse to buy the even split clamshell design.
On my recent trip to vegas, trying to repack before coming home and trying to cram it all in, I thought of this concept of why can't a suitcase open from the top😭😭. Had no idea it's a real thing😂
Wow! Mind blowing! I wonder why this isn't the default format (or even common).
3.8kg empty is actually quite heavy. I agree that the one opening from the top is game changing but my previous carry on not even 3kg empty. Mostly 2.6kg. So I'm not sure if I want to change to this because most airlines in Asia and Australia is very strick with the carry-on weight limit. But overall I always like your reviews. Regards from Hungary xx
Stay tuned, currently putting together a similar video for my next favorite bag which is 2.5kgs!
The holy grail! We've been looking for something like this, and it's astonishing that none of the mainstream or newbie luggage brands make it. A hard shell that opens like a soft shell.
Did you know that for flying international out of Sydney Australia my weight limit for carry on was 7kg. This bag looks great but it weighs in at 8.8 pounds. That’s 3.99 kilos. So I could take 3 kgs of luggage in my carry for the flight.
I totally agree. They are hard to find nowadays. The footprint is also much smaller when open.
8.3 lbs or 3.8kgs is way too heavy. There's no way I would go with such a heavy carryon bag.
I've always used a soft sided carry on because I like the top open feature. Glad to see it is available with a more sturdy suitcase.
I got a rolling clam shell suitcase recently and the first time I used it I realized that the open top style is so much better. The first chance I get, I'm replacing the clam shell bag. It's too inconvenient at the hotel.
Yes but I thought the plan was to go under the seat, and forget about the overhead bin. That's the plan you taught that I love, and have implemented with success! ;-)
For those that are restricted to only under the seat bags or want to travel ultra-light - yes those videos are my system! But I also still fly with a full carry on as many of my flights allow 😊
Well look at that, were back to using a trunk for travel. I love it. British Airways lost my heirloom carryon with garment bag in the lid. Rest of the bag was similar to this, but soft sided. Thank you so much for this posting this, it solves my search for a replacement.
I do love the front open design. I hate center open suitcases with a passion. My ideal suitcase, at least for bigger suitcases would be a front open design that opens down because I pack my heaviest items on the bottom so that the suitcase it bottom heavy and less likely to tip over. The downside I see with this suitcase you featured is that it weighs over 8 pounds. That's kind of a deal breaker for me.
I love how proper and civil she’s speaking and then she drops the “deep ass bin” description 😂
This bag is too heavy while empty, there are other better lighter bags I still prefer clam shell
This video makes me feel absolutely ancient. Wait’ll you kids discover the perks of owning physical copies of music, movies, and books!
I must look and sound younger than I am...thank you for this comment 😂
Oh, bought that bag a few months ago (mine is pink). I love it to bits. My brother was impressed by it and how smooth it rolls. He ended up getting the black and red wheel one. I highly recommend it.
clamshell designs are very awkward to open as the top half is weighted, especially problematic in tight areas like airports and small rooms. I hate this design and would never buy or use one.
Been waiting all my life for deep hard case top opening bag.i bought a mid size bag . Mine is a ZOOMLITE it’s so fantastic as it has an expansion joint in the centre so any pockets just love it and I bought two more one cabin and one large
Why didn't anyone think about this sooner?
Top loading with packing bags are the way to go. Without the packing bags, everything quickly gets jumbled in the bag as you dig into it to retrieve clothing.
Two things...1. 3.8kg? WTF? how is that practical? 2. Agree on many points, but at the same time clams have a advantage of being easier in terms of managing space if you are not unpacking at the hotel... one-sided zip seems to be like a bin for clothes.
You forgot the NUMBER ONE reason:
hotel luggage racks don’t hold clamshells, so the clamshell slides off with both sides open
So basically they reinvented the wheel?! This is how all suitcases used to be.
Before the semi-hard clamshells, we had these deep suitcases with a flat cover. It’s actually nothing new. I know because I’m THAT old. 😂
Currently $161.49 USD for Prime members. Also, "69% Nice" ... 😜😆
That’s pretty much the same as softside luggage. It’s not really new, other than this is hardside (and has some other subsidiary features).
I like these suitcases but its weight empty, makes me hesitant to buy it.
Cool, thanks. Who recommended it to you?
The trick is it must have a lot of adjustable compartments.
God bless you.
3.8 kg is very heavy, most international airlines allow 7kg hand-carry, tgis eats up more than half allocated :(
All long haul flights I've been on restrict cabin luggage to 15lbs or 7kg. So at nearly 4kg your actual contents cannot exceed 3kg.
Clamshells, especially the bigger ones, just won't fit on the baggage rack in the hotel room. I'd have to lay it down on the floor. This design is much better, but durability could be an issue.
The case is too big based on the video you just published about EU standard carry-on size. Oh well.
Oh, bought that bag a few months ago (mine is pink). I love it to bits. My brother was impressed by it and how smooth it rolls. He ended up getting the black and red wheel one. I highly recommend it.
I actually don't like the top-lid style like this. In my case, I bring not only clothes, but also a lot of non-clothing items (hair dryer, small iron, mini drying hanger, extension sockets, etc.), which makes the packing and access challenging if I have to put them all in one stack/side. The easier way is to separate clothes from non clothes in a clam-style suitcase.
It's true the top-lid one allows easier access in a way, but if I happen to need the item at the bottom of the pile, I'm gonna need to unload most of the stuffs inside. I prefer to just spread opening in the clam-style, at least there's no need to unload most stuffs from the top to reach the bottom.
Love bathtub style bags, sturdier and better for tall items.
You purchased it "FROM" Amazon, NOT "off of". Please learn English if you want to be a TH-camr!
4kg empty? Good luck flying carry on! Many airlines esp in Asia have a 7kg limit….
I love you and your videos but I Hate people with carry-ons!
That’s enough for a 5-7 day trip for you? I assume you rewash things or wear various things multiple times.
I bought top quality Delsey paris suitcase, and my god do I H*** it. It is reallt strong and good and beuatiful, but omg clamshell style is sooooo horribly annoying. I need to lay it on the floor and give it alot of space or put it on a bed. …just to take 1 thing out. Takes so much space AND heavy to lift the clam to open up. I am getting top open design asap and just gonna sell my expensive set.
This type of bag is great if you are traveling in a country that has smooth walkways and roads. If you are traveling in a country with dirt roads or uneven cobblestones, a bag with wheels won’t work as easily.
I’d like this capacity and practicality but as a rucksack, no wheels or handle. Looks cracking though.
I got a 5.11 roller bag that is expandable with a top open, perfect for a 7 day trip. I hated the clamshell design of most spinners on the market
Stopped using clamshell carry-ons years ago. The weight of this bag is a concern.
Ehhh- US Amazon jacked price to $161 8/14 - no deal
I have the biggest size in this style and I really like it. Now I have the hard shell benefits without my suitcase splitting in half to open. However,I tend to be overweight because there is so much room to fill.😬
Sounds like a bag I would use for my diabetes supplies for traveling
3.8 kg out of a 10 kg limit? I guess you should wear your heavy clothes.
This is around 300 euro in Europe, anyone got alternative / cheaper options of a similar design?
August 2024 the coffee holder back is almost $200 😂
Love that it packs more and that it works for you but personally, its a hassle to dig thru the pile to find what you need
there are generally weight limits anyway on carry ons so packing more will generally = more weight so meh, I prefer some basic organization
That's what packing cubes and bags are for.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade you still have to dig thru the packing cubes.
My thoughts exactly. I don’t want to have to pull my packing cubes all out if I have to get one on the bottom.
Not a new style. We've had them in NZ and in Australia foe decades. 6 of one half a dozen of the other.
But have to add we didn't have the tech accessories or the cup holder. Great idea the cup holder.
As a nightstand, that’s great I could ‘You can put your cpap machine’ yea that.
How does this qualify as novel thing...most travel bags i have had were s similar basic design...
Is it cause its a rigid shell and not a soft one?
So they took a traditional suitcase style and then switched to clamshell hard style suitcase as popular and then said “oh wait this design sucks! Let’s go back to traditional design with a flap like traditional luggage”. Brilliant marketing.
The wheels look huge which is decreasing interior suitcase space. This is why I prefer 2 wheel suitcase because you get a few more inches of actual packable space.
‘Bayg’ counter = 53
2:47 if the bag is 9.8 inches deep how does it fit "just fine" if the carryon limit is only 9 inches deep?
Thanks Aly, I love that bag but who is the manufacturer or the make?
