The F4E was a response due to the urgent need of an internal gun and performance capability. The F4J was built around long range missile technology. While the F4J carried Aim-7s, the Aim-9Gs work similarly in terms of range and flare resistance. The F4J makes for a good long range support fighter picking off enemies that are occupied while the F4E is better at close range dogfighting. I personally like the F4J better since your missiles have an insane range of 5km, they usually give me around 8-10kills a match!
