Alan, this training vlog reminds me of an old Dan John article about the seasonality of training and the importance of having different phases to keep your training fresh. Great content.
Honestly Alan, I've dipped in and out of your content for years but I always come back. You come across as curious, genuine and always enjoying training which is what I aspire to be in training. Looking forward to seeing you win the Cali Strongest Man 2025!
I'd like to take a moment to voice my appreciation for the little cooking segments that sometimes pop up in Alan's videos. Simple, healthy and delicious. Would love to see more 🙏🙏
This is some good shit, Alan. Your thinking on jumping is spot on. I've been thinking about my training as a way to build and preserve athleticism throughout my lifespan (not that I was ever much of an athlete). Being strong is great, having great cardio is great, but we also want to be powerful (move heavy things quickly) and have the ability to do things like jumping in our 50s and 60s (and beyond).
Exited to see this prep and I love your approach to training last year. I feel like we all need a couple of months (or year) to just do things that feel fun.
I've been battling sciatica for the last 6 months. Still not 100% back to normal but I too am weak. Prioritizing diffrent strength goals has actually been refreshing and humbling lately.
Low back pain is the worst. The exercises that helped me more than anything were lunges and split squat variations. You'll quickly determine whether or not a large cause of your sciatica and low back pain is due to a strength imbalance between the legs, which throws off the hips and lumbar spine. Try a split squat hold on each leg and note the difference in strength and stability. The pallof press and back extension are also great. Good luck and happy new year 🤙
Love the new video Alan! It's inspiring to see some proper strength and conditioning training. I think this year im going to try and get back into being a bit more athletic and explosive as I've fallen into being a really strong bodybuilder which is nice but I do miss being able to push, jump and throw heavy things.
Excited to follow this mini journey of yours as a long time fan. Crush it! Also, when you explain doing only 2 sets for some exercises, are you doing any warm up sets or just going straight into the exercise?
The thing about jumping is true. It’s so easy to unlearn. As a child you naturally jump around. When I started working in wood wholesaling, I was jumping up and down the the trucks or the sideloading forklifts. Now in my mid 30s I still Mountainbike, lift and hike but I can’t remember to and don’t dare to jump down more than 2 steps of a stair.
I understand getting up early to get things done before everyone else is awake, but I don't really understand sacrificing sleep time to make a fairly involved woodfire breakfast. This isn't a criticism, I'm sure you have a reason and I'd be interested to know about it.
Ironic. As someone who mostly watches and lifts olympic I was thinking the opposite but you are right for someone who isn't a competition level lifter in the C&J he is pretty solid.
10 year follower here. Looking forward to this series and the competition! Question: why not focus more on strength first and then branche out to practicing the events, i.e. how are you going to keep track of your overall strength progression with all these different exercises; will you track it with a periodic squat/deadlift/(bench)press check-in?
@@CalebTheSeeker What's this about? I live in Finland where food is relatively expensive but a pack of 18 large eggs still costs no more than maybe 3.80 euros.
@kgsvvgla2i I live in a small town in Texas with my wife and two kids, and the price of groceries is our highest monthly expense, even higher than our monthly rent. A gallon of milk is $5 A dozen eggs is $6 A pound of ground beef is $7-8 One avocado is $2.39 One bell pepper is $2.79 I make $19 an hour as a service mechanic at a local garage, so making ends meet for my little family is tough. But my God is good and has always provided everything we need and everything I have asked for. 🙏
can you make a complete beginner series where you cover everything a beginner needs. The series should really cover the basic well and should be comprehensive so the foundational knowledge is strong for a beginner. I think most of the videos you need for this course are already there on the channel so you just need to add in a few and make it into a playlist. What do you say to it?
Elevating myself for a deficit deadlift makes sense, but not for a pendlay/barbell row. I would consider the "deficit" to be the ROM of the barbell. As in applying fat grips on the bar to get the ROM. Or doing the same for a barbell bench press, sure the individual can do dumbbell variants and get similar ROM. I'm just not convinced involving an elevated platform for barbell rows has as much impact.
He isn't really doing a Pendlay row. The whole exercise seems like some sort of hodge podge row. Not sure it matters as strong man isn't super technical like the Olympic lifts or even the classical lifts. Glen has an old video out there of how to actually do the barbell row that bears his name now for those who are interested in what it should look like and what you should be focusing on. Great exercise in my book.
So you just proved that strength doesn't mean size and you cant have both at the same time, because you can lift heavy on advanced level, but you look the same as you looked 10 years ago, no matter how much fat you've lost. Anyone with 2-3 years of gym experience can look like you, without doing the big compounds on intermediate level. No offense

Untamed ASMR
Just finished GVS’s new video, now this drops. What great day to have a ton of driving for work!
Watched this one after the second... I am enjoying this vlog look into your prep. Best of luck!

I saw a coffee grinder like that at an antique mall over winter break. GOT to have one it’s so classy
This will be interesting. Good luck on your journey to new strength levels
Beautiful video. I find it to be a calming and interesting watch. Real talent in lifting and vlogging, thx man! Good luck at the comp!

Yeah my second half 2024 was low back healing. Think I fixed it finally. Back under the bar now, a little wiser. Hang in there buddy. Take your time

You should do audio books. You have a very calming voice
Welcome back 😎
10:50 I'm glad someone as cool as you thinks Anderson's are great.
8:15 yeah Attia says we should maintain some jumping and sprinting capacity as we age. In addition to strength, cardio and mobility.
alan, i just wanted to thank you for introducing super squats to me, i just hate my life the last weeks now
Really enjoyed this Alan.
I've noticed a huge difference in my training my incorporating jump rope.

That’s one well seasoned cast iron!
Damn gonna make these pancakes this week
Will u be competing in a lower weight class this time?
With that supplement stack sign Alan to BPN immediately 😂
What kinda asmr video did I step into here 😂
Alan, how would you train for special forces and still want to train hard with weights, doing powerlifting and strongman stuff?
Hi Alan, have you ever been in contact with NH about your BB program after 1 year of training? Are you planning to run it in the future?

Oh shit! A sweet potato!? The carnivores are going to put a hit on you. Better call the boys in.
Alan how can i get those hamstrings bro...teach us your ways
Get strong af with general lifts, then lean out with carbs and less weight and more reps. That's what he has been doing for the last 5 years.
Methinks Alan had to use photoshop to remove muscles for the thumbnail!
🔥🎸🔥
Idk I’m gonna have more muscle in 10 years than I have today
Is this that ASMR everyone's been talking about?
How as a strongman does one justify completely negelcting any type of neck training???
How old is Alan?
He's 35
