It has been years since I did any gardening and newly moved to Madison county and a lot of red dirt. First thing I did was add castings and bought a container of the wiggles for my raised garden. And....so far the results are great!! Very informative report...thanks!
That worm harvester (shown at the end) was invented by a guy out here in Northern California who had a big worm farm in the Sacramento valley. He fed his worms manure from a nearby dairy.
I live in Deltona Florida with two bins of red wigglers. As I type, I am brewing compost tea from wiggler castings. I cannot afford to move two miles down the road to the "AG" approved area. How can I expand in my garage operation? I am not a marketer. My County AG center is not what you would call entrepreneur friendly. I also have some back and neck problems that do not help. I really would like to increase my casting sales. Do you gentleman have any suggestions for a frustrated beginner. I would like to find a like minded person like myself to come along side of me.
I guess they believed their own rubbish about worms laying an egg every day and populations doubling every 4 - 6 weeks. Same lies that lost a lot of people a lot of money during the worm "boom" 20 odd years ago.
Well, you know the eggs do not all make it and a new worm has to mature for the 6 weeks. Worms will not reproduce unless conditions (especially moisture and temperature) are right. So 'the math' is subject to some influences.

I have a bunch of baby red wigglers that I want to save. How do I harvest the compost without killing the baby worms?
Follow the heap harvest method.
