Full proof means it was proofed down to what it entered the barrel at. Barrel proof/strength means it’s bottle at whatever proof comes out of the barrel. Love your guys’ videos!
I have 2-3 1792 FP store picks and people think I'm crazy because I tell them it's my favorite bottle in the last 2-3 years. Give it 2-3 months to open up and the candied fruit comes through on the bottles I've had. What a hitter.
I did a store pick tasting for my buddy's liquor store in Bardstown, Ky at 1792 for a Full Proof Bottle. The staff at 1792 was amazing to us and we had a blast learning from them. They are non chill filtered bottles and I want to say they brought us 4 or maybe 5 barrels from all different parts of the barrel house. They couldn't have tasted more different. Each barrel had its' own unique flavors and attributes. We spent hours going over them and the barrel we picked was amazing! They are 1 off's compared to the regularl release. Definitely worth trying if you see them.
Great content, as always!! I have found getting to know the store and their palate preferences is key. To get a store pick just because it’s a store pick can be a crap shoot if you don’t know what they shoot for in their picks. I have two specific stores that I get my picks from as I have gotten to know the owners and align really well to their palates. A good store will offer samples of their picks for you to try before buying.
I picked up a store pick of Stellum and the first thing I thought of when I started drinking it was "man these guys must love scotch". Definitely had notes of Oban, but a bit more subdued but higher proof. After I finish this one, which may take a while, dont know that I'll buy any more of this stores picks unless they are willing to serve up some samples of it first. Strong ethanol start which lingered too.
1792 Small Batch is all we have seen here in NC. That being said, it is one of my top 10 bourbons. Finding a full or barrel proof would likely be a top 5. Great show guys!
I'm still working through the last of my first 1792 Full Proof. It is a Total Wine store pick. When I first opened it, it was just too dang hot. It drank more like 140 proof. It's been open for many months now and the heat has dissipated a bit. It's rounded into a really enjoyable pour. I recently found a pick at a different store so I grabbed that one.

Bought a store pick AND a regular release from Beverage House in Vista, CA about a year ago. The store pick was noticeably better, almost sublime. I went back and bought 3 more bottles the next day. I ended up buying 8 more total including the last one. I still have not finished the second bottle as I have a lot of other Bourbons. I will be enjoying this for years.
The point that many have made here IS that the store picks are only as good as (or at least reflective of) the palate(s) that pick them, so they can be hit and miss--or at least not match your palate. I have not had many great Total Wine picks, but in Texas I find Spec's picks to be reliable.
The only store pick and shelf pick i ever had side by side was Buffalo Trace. I did a blind and store pick blew it away. I was told the the store pick waz 2 or years older. I have the shelf 1792 Full Proof and like it a lot. Looking forward to tje cocktail video. I am always up for a new cocktail to try.
So cool that you’re doing this. I just blinded my 1792 FP against a pick (r/bourbon). The pick had a better nose…. but I honestly couldn’t discern a difference on the palate and finish. Great episode! I guess a pick is only as good as the picker!
I have two 1792 store picks and the difference is crazy. The one is great - smooth and has complex flavors. The other I would be better off using as a cleaning solvent. The one that isn’t very good came from a store where I also had picked up a Knob Creek store pick. Not a fan of that one either. I don’t plan on buying any more from that store but do will continue to pick some up elsewhere when I see them. They really can be very different from the normal bottles - coinflip as to whether it’s better or worse
One of my favorite bottles of bourbon was a store pick Old Souls. I purchased 2 bottles and quickly disposed of one bottle. So I had to buy 2 more because when they are gone, they are gone for good. Not many stores carry Old Souls in this area.
I love 1792 full proof, I always have a bottle, usually a store pick on hand. If it is a bit too oaky I add a bit of 1792 small batch to fix it. Better than adding water.
I'm hesitant to go for store picks unless the store at least provides a description of what makes the pick unique with tasting notes. That's really helpful to me, as opposed to just putting it on a shelf and leaving it a mystery. I have a local store that puts descriptor names on their Knob Creek store picks like "Candy" and "Top Floor Vanilla," and they have short explanations for the names.
For myself I tend to not go for 'store picks'. A store pick is a voted on barrel, picked by a group of strangers to me. I have no idea what their tastes are or what they like or are looking for in their Bourbon. The group of store employees that vote on a barrel pick could have radically opposite flavor profile characteristics to what I like or desire in a Bourbon bottle profile. That for me tends to be the case. My tastes and what I look for in Bourbon is vastly different than the majority of the majority of people or Bourbon enthusiasts. That is why store picks don't impress me. I have learned to stay clear of them. It will just end up being a let down and waste of money and probably end up getting poured down the drain.
Got my 1st bottle & taste of this a cpl days ago & it was a store pick for $45, Brl# 9990. Very nice at that price. Has distinct sweet vanilla on the palate. Not hot like many reviews have said for this. The color in the Glen was significantly darker than the other BP juice next to it. Would think it was double oaked or had coloring added, when not knowing what it is. From reading lots of reviews, it seems they improved this significantly in the last yr or 2, since it's was originally released in 2016.
I bought 1792 because of you two. I've been really enjoying their small batch. I have not found any other offerings yet. I'll watch out for the store picks now also. Thanks for the video.
I almost never find store picks to be superior to what the distillery puts out. I think for 3 reasons, #1 taste is so specific that unless you and whoever is doing the picks have similar taste, odds are they won't pick something you like, #2 I find they try to pick something "different" from what the distillery puts out and that usually translates to not as good and #3 do we really think some random liquor store owner has a better, more refined and more trained palette than the distillery master taster/distiller/selection panel? All of this is why I love the single barrel or picks released by the distilleries. They are almost always superior to store picks, and sometimes even better than the regular stuff. I haven't yet had the pleasure of tasting one of the SLB picks, but I have to say one of the reasons I enjoy your videos so much is early on I figured out you guys tend to like the same things I do, which means I would be more likely to enjoy your picks. I guess if you can find a specific store that picks in line with your taste, then absolutely, but in general, chasing store picks is going to end up with you owning a shelf full of inferior whiskey. JMHO of course. To each their own.
It took me a while, but I finally found a bottle of 1792 bottled in bond. It’s really good in my opinion. Full proof and bottled in bond are my two favorite 1792 bottles.
I may be a little late to this party, I just started seeing these full proof bottles in my area but damn they are surprisingly good. The price point is in the $40-50 range but we’ll worth the money. Thank you for a great comparison video and cheers!
I just revisited a bottle of 1792 small batch after your brackets inspired me to dust it off. Sure it want the exact bottle in the tournament but it had me interested. On second visit I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I bought a couple single barrels and a full proof this past week. Can't wait to step it up a notch and see what it has to offer. Cheers SLB crew!
I live in the area of this store. I’ve got this bottle. It really is fantastic. I’ve had 2 of these store picks from different stores. They’re both really solid bottles. I’ll buy one of these whenever I see it
Living in non controlled states, the store pucks are often cheaper than the distillers drops. EC BP is 110 where I live, but I can get a store pick EC BP for 80. It's usually a no Brainer.
I just got a store pick 1792 full proof for 50 and it is absolutely delicious. They also had a store pick blantons I picked up. Also delicious. They said the blantons barrel was the highest one in the rick house
Great video guys. I'm a bit envious because I can't even find a 1792 Full Proof let alone a store pick. It's one bottle I've yet to come across in my journey, and to be honest, I sort of forgot about it. Based on your reactions to each though, I have it firmly back on my radar. Cheers.
I've never seen a non store pick of full proof in my part of Texas. I'd be curious to do a comparison as well. Awesome content, guys. And the zoom in on Trents face was priceless 🤣
Great video guys! My favorites to hunt/find are single barrel or store picks like that 1792, wish I could find one! I haven’t found a bad single barrel or pick yet, they are always good to just awesome tasting. Cheers
I love the channel and I've learned so much about whiskey from you guys! I keep an eye out for 1792 products where I live (Bay area, CA), but I've only found the small batch so far. Excited to try some of their other bourbons!
It doesn't always work. I had a Buffalo Trace store pick from shoppers vineyard in Clifton, NJ. It was horrible, it tasted like a grass and hay smoothie. 😢😵
Single Barrel store picks that are normally batched products have more gravitas. That's why Weller store picks are the most sought after. ...Especially going back a few years before distilleries' marketing departments decided to make "store picks" available to every store that had the through put, even large chain grocery stores. Since that point, "store picks" have lost their luster a bit. I still buy them, but have time believing "joe the grocer" sat down and actually went through a lineup of barrels and hand selected "his" barrel based on his "seasoned palate" .
I have a store pick of the 1792 full proof and am very impressed with it. It really does have such great flavor and at 125 proof doesnt have the burn you would expect. These guys had a Buffalo Trace store pick as well, which very solid too. I definitely appreciate the palates of the guys doing the picking there. Great topic and review. Cheers!
i got a 1792 full proof store pick from total wine today for $49 and used my $5 rewards coupon. I don't think you can get a single barrel pick at 125 proof for $50 from any other company.
The 1792 small batch is great pour. Nice pretzel profile which i really enjoy however its extremely hard to find in my area. Id like to try the rest of the lineup if i can find it
I had a chance to buy the NC special barrel 1792, but a friend who had gotten it said the 95+proof basically killed the flavor with proof. I love 1792 for the sweet notes and subtly. If that's gone, what's the point
Good stuff! It took me a year but I finally got my hands on a full proof & BIB which are hard to come by in NO. Keep this series going! Interesting to see which picks are hits & which are duds.
Store picks of 1792 FP are common near me, and I ALWAYS grab one. 1792 FP is one of my favorites in that proof range. I will actually reach for it before ECBP most days.
That's crazy! It's everywhere here. But I to emphasize the weirdness of distrubution in the industry, some basics like Old Times BiB (both before and after the sale of the label) are not available in the state/ region. @@FakingANerve
For us new bourbonites, how can we tell if a bottle is a store pick or not? Is there a special label or markings? Perhaps a giant sign that says store pick? Do tell.
The store will call attention to their picks. Often there will be a separate shelf for store picks. There should be a shelf tag saying "this is a store pick" and an extra label on the bottle. Where I am (Ohio) picks are done at the state level (OHLQ). The label will say something like "OHLQ exclusive, barrel 247". Stores typically have a shelf devoted to OHLQ picks.
My bottle of Balcones True Blue corn whisky is a Total Wine store pick - and I didn't realize it till I got to the house and saw the sticker. There might have been something on the shelf, but I had already planned to get that whisky and so I was just looking at the bottles.
These explanations are great! There should be a sticker on the bottle that states that fact. Just ask the store clerk for location of their barrel picks.
I always really like 1792, and got a store pick ata southern Missouri liquor store, Beehive liquors. Thr manager wa sifferingtastes a f their pick and it was great. Still haven’t opened our bottle but it should be tasty!
You mentioned getting hit with the proof when your nose gets too close to the tulip. Have you guys ever tried the Norlan whiskey glasses? They really let the nose come through. Would be interested in a video review of them. Slàinte
Store picks are a try before you buy in my book. I bought a 1792 Full Proof that was a nasty mess. Since then, I have only bought from stores that have sample pours for sale.
With all this talk about bottles and tasting notes that you're finding, I just wish that I could find a bottle of 1792 Full Proof or even a Bottled in Bond! They haven't appeared on many shelves recently. Nonetheless, great show! Cheers!
I have store picks of full proof and BIB . Both are exceptional. On a side note, I find that 1792 SB has the closest flavor profile to Blanton's. I wonder if anyone else has done a comparison between the two and thinks the same?🤔🥃
@@slbdrinks Thanks. One of the things I've done with my buddies when tasting scotch, bourbons or whiskey 1.smell & taste pour 2.add 2-3 drops water 3. finish on ice. I know I know it's blasphemy according to some BUT the difference in flavor is astonishing especially to beginners!
Great content as always. A question please since I see 1792 getting listed in many people's list of must have bourbons under 50USD. So does it mean that this is one of the best representative of what a bourbon is what a bourbon should taste like?? Are there other bourbons that could be considered the same way??? Sort of like the most quintessential bourbon?? Thanks
That’s a good question. My guess is that this bourbon is listed as must have because it tastes great. I would not consider this to be quintessential though. That term I use mostly when a bourbon has Carmel, vanilla, brown sugar, sweet oak notes. This one is a bit outside that box but very tasty indeed.
@@slbdrinks Thank you for your response ☺️. I would like to try a bourbon which has those tastes you mentioned above. So may I kindly request your advise please to let me know couple of good bourbons to buy under 50USD which would give me those tasting notes highlighted in your above response? I am not a beginner when it comes to whisky in general but with bourbons I am kind of new and your videos have certainly helped a great deal in spiking my interest in bourbons 😇.
I would try old forester 1910, if you can find them Early Times Bottle in Bond and Bowman single barrel. Not sure if your area has regular Buffalo Trace but that’s another excellent choice.
Suprised to hear so many people saying this drinks so hot...The bottle of 1792 Full Proof I have drinks WAY below proof. The BiB I have even feels hotter. I guess that goes to show how varied store picks can be.
Just as the name, store owner or some representative of the store goes to the distillery to pick the barrel they want to purchase to sell. The usual process is they taste each barrel and let you choose the best one. So think of it as the best of the regular bunch
Two days ago I literally just picked up a store pick of 1792 full proof and now tasting along with the video with my full proof and full proof store pick.
Full proof means it was proofed down to what it entered the barrel at. Barrel proof/strength means it’s bottle at whatever proof comes out of the barrel. Love your guys’ videos!
Came here to find this comment! Full proof isn’t the same as barrel proof. Good catch.
Yes, it talks about that on the back label if I’m not mistaken.
What is cask strength mean?
They're not legally regulated terms and could all be watered down to some extent.
@@kjburke58 it’s the proof that it is when it’s dumped from the cask. (Barrel)

Had a sip of my 1792 Full Proof Store Pick last night and had same thought on bright / citrus tasting!
Thank you! Lol
@@slbdrinks Haha for how many times you said bright it made me laugh! But had same thought!
Good stuff! It took me a year but I finally got my hands on a full proof & BIB which are hard to come by in NO. Keep this series going! Interesting to see which picks are hits & which are duds.
Man I really look forward to watching these videos, keep up the good work guys! I just landed a store pick Barrel Proof as well!
Turn “bright” into a drinking game 😊
It's the viscosity in the 1792 Full Proof.. if you love a thick viscosity 1792 Full Proof store pick or regular is where it's at...
I have a bottle on my shelf, it is next on my too try list. Looking for ward to it
To summarize: the batch release is an incandescent light bulb, and the store pick is a workshop LED super bright light!
Exactly!
Store picks of 1792 FP are common near me, and I ALWAYS grab one. 1792 FP is one of my favorites in that proof range. I will actually reach for it before ECBP most days.
I rarely see any 1792 FP outside of 2X+ MSRP, and have only come across a FP store pick once (at MSRPish, no less). You're a lucky man!
That's crazy! It's everywhere here. But I to emphasize the weirdness of distrubution in the industry, some basics like Old Times BiB (both before and after the sale of the label) are not available in the state/ region. @@FakingANerve
Hear me out...Penelope Barrel Strength. Just picked one up last night and didnt expect much. WOW was I wrong. Snag it if ya see it!
Good stuff!
@@slbdrinks Thank you for the explanation
Nice review! I’d love to find a 1792 pick! Good thing it’s not a game of drinking every time the word brighter is said:) haha 90 picks in a year, wow!
1792 is a great value. Love the BIB and 12 year!
My 1792 full proof store pick is amazing. Tastes like honey, smells like a musty rickhouse with all that angels share aroma
I Enjoy 1792, especially for the price point.
I think its 50/50. Someones likes are not necessarily everyones. The regulars at times are better.
Agreed.
I really really really dig your videos! Keep up the great content and cheers from South Carolina
Slàinte
I do have a set of Norlans so that would be interesting.
I actually just got selected to buy a store pick Elijah Craig Barrel Proof today so the video came at a good timing
Store picks are a try before you buy in my book. I bought a 1792 Full Proof that was a nasty mess. Since then, I have only bought from stores that have sample pours for sale.
A good store will have samples of their picks. Good call.
Yes, that’s the only way I’ll pick a store pick they will give you a taste
Been to Buster's in Memphis many times. Great store.
Triangle had a pick a few months ago, I'd be glad to let you use it for another comparison
Possibly thanks Mike! Love doing these comparison shows.
I have every 1792 offering except Sweet Wheat. I love the 12 Year, BIB, Full Proof and Single Barrel. The others are still enjoyable. 🥃
Nice collection!
With all this talk about bottles and tasting notes that you're finding, I just wish that I could find a bottle of 1792 Full Proof or even a Bottled in Bond! They haven't appeared on many shelves recently. Nonetheless, great show! Cheers!
Just scored a Total Wine store pick yesterday. Last one on the shelf. Anyone had it? Can't wait to try it!
I just picked up a pick of this. Can’t wait to try it.
I have store picks of full proof and BIB . Both are exceptional. On a side note, I find that 1792 SB has the closest flavor profile to Blanton's. I wonder if anyone else has done a comparison between the two and thinks the same?🤔🥃
I have not but sounds interesting
The close-up 😅😅😅😂. Way too, go!!!! The close-up was brighter 😅😅😅😅😅😅😂🎉🎉😂
How long do the pours sit on the counter before you do your sniff test and description?
I try to get between 15-30 minutes. Helps me if it sits in the glass a bit.
@@slbdrinks Thanks. One of the things I've done with my buddies when tasting scotch, bourbons or whiskey
1.smell & taste pour 2.add 2-3 drops water
3. finish on ice. I know I know it's blasphemy according to some BUT the difference in flavor is astonishing especially to beginners!
The word blasphemy is for snobs only lol. Drink it the way you like it!
Another GREAT video, learning so much from you guys and enjoying you both. Have a fun and safe weekend.
How does it compare to the Kirkland version?
Quite a bit better imo.
Thanks
I would say no.
I just picked up the store pick of Jefferson Reserve Single Barrel and it’s delicious
Sazerac uses Full Proof as proofed down to barrel entry proof.
Love the videos! Just got this bottle! Store pick.
Suprised to hear so many people saying this drinks so hot...The bottle of 1792 Full Proof I have drinks WAY below proof. The BiB I have even feels hotter. I guess that goes to show how varied store picks can be.
What are the price points of the two?
A normal release if sold at retail should be 50-60.00. The barrel pick should be 70-80.00
Is it normal for stores to charge more $ for a store pick?
What is the typical price for a full proof non store pick?
Should be somewhere around 50.00
@@slbdrinks thanks, I will be looking here in SE Wisconsin
Hi novice here. What is the difference between a store pick vs a regular release?
Just as the name, store owner or some representative of the store goes to the distillery to pick the barrel they want to purchase to sell. The usual process is they taste each barrel and let you choose the best one. So think of it as the best of the regular bunch
@Henry explains this perfectly!
But is it Bright?
Struggled for the right words there but was trying to explain how much more the flavors were pronounced compared to the shelf bottle.
I bought small batch and Im not crazy about it. I will look for store pick
Two days ago I literally just picked up a store pick of 1792 full proof and now tasting along with the video with my full proof and full proof store pick.
Nice!
Was that store in Memphis?
Yes I believe so
Been there many times, good store
Just curious, can anybody tell me what the SLB in SLB Drinks stands for?
Strong like bull
@@deankruse4491 I heard it might have some sort of meaning to do with their Grandma or something though?
It’s an ode to my mother and stands for strong like bull.
@@slbdrinks I see... who's mother? Kurt?
@@HeyNikP yes
Not my fault that you are meme worthy ;)
Ha!! Go getem Carlos!
I think it may have tasted BRIGHT! Ha!
I though botanical on the brightness of my 1792 SP.
You got CRS can’t remember stuff; if you’re over 40 you’re allowed
Got that right! 😂
That's really strange, in a good way..how does that happen!?
