    The reason why scramblers are so popular now is not because it's a scrambler, but because manufacturers is aiming for the retro look with their motorcycles and it looks good.

    This one deserves more views, loved it. Personally I think that modern dual sports like the Husqvarna 701 and DRZ400 are way more of a spiritual successor to the original scramblers. But that's just me 🤷‍♂️

  • @PortCharmers
    @PortCharmers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Remember that the first scramblers (and Cafe-Racers) were not produced by companies, but modified road bikes. In WWII Motorcycle messengers took hardtail bikes off road, like Harley WLA or BSA M20. What I see in a scrambler like the modern Triumph or Ducati is a bike you can travel on, clock up some serious miles on road, and don't have to be afraid of a stretch of gravel road or worse. They would be too heavy for the scottish six days. Like an adventure bike, but with style.

  • @Michele-ue5eu
    @Michele-ue5eu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +75

    I could see the use of a modern scrambler, I feel like adv, enduros, dirt bikes and so on, are all in the same category but on different scales, I mean:
    Pure offroad? dirt bikes
    Long trips on road and offroad? ADV bikes
    Short trips mosly offroad but need it to be road legal? Enduro
    Long trips mostly offroad? Rally raid
    Medium distances mostly on road but with some offroad? I think the modern scrambler could fit right here, mostly a "regular" road bike with some offroad capability.
    You might argue that there is a big "poser factor" in the scrambler buyer, but isn't there a little of "poser factor" in everey motorcycle category? I am sure you have met the BMW GS guy with full metal panniers that has never seen a bit of dirt in his entire life and I am sure you have met the full dainese suit super sport guy with tyres with chicken strips as big as his brand new puck sliders

    I have been watching these Scrambler reviews a long time and almost all of them say that Scramblers can’t off-road good but after buying one and trying it myself I would argue that they do almost as well as a dirt bike but that might be because I have been riding almost all my life off road. All in all any motorcycle can do almost anything if the right rider is on it.

    When I was looking at buying my first bike I started in the scrambler section because they looked cool and I was enticed by the idea that they could be good off road. I quickly discovered that a lot of the modern scrambler market is very fashion over function. If you want a bike for hopping around an urban area that has a lot of curb appeal, the scrambler/cafe racer section may be a nice option. For me I wanted a bike I could feel comfortable putting on dirt roads that was comfortable enough to take longer distances, simple, reliable, and easy to maintain. For those reasons I ended up going with a KLR 650. I'm not a speed freak and the simplicity and durability of the KLR was what ended up winning me over. ADV bikes are not the prettiest, so you might not get the barista's phone number, but you're also a little less likely to have your bike stolen. If your goal is really going off road and don't care about fashion, dual sports are definitely the way to go. Don't be dissuaded by the fashion over function argument though; just be honest with yourself. Attractive bikes are popular for a reason and if aesthetics matter to you don't feel bad about getting something that looks good. On the same note, if off road functionality is more important try not to get lured into a bike that looks good, but struggles in the dirt. You'll have more fun riding something that you aren't afraid to drop!

    Being as old as I am, I remember going to watch (as a boy) scrambler races back in the sixties. I would laugh my socks off watching someone on one of these modern scramblers on the same track. Picking one up after you fell off, standing in pouring rain, slimy wet clay underfoot, on a slope with water pouring down it. Yeah, right. No way. They are way too heavy. The dirt bike is the true scrambler.

    A scrambler was a naked street standard that was modified to better travel in the dirt. It was often stripped to the bare essentials, and modified with tall bars, high exhaust, and knobbier tires. A skid plate was also a smart addition. The modern scramblers can be made much more dirtworthy, usually by stripping weight and changing tires. Suspension upgrades also help.
    An enduro is basically a dirtbike with lights, although some also have the road-legal equipment of mirrors and horn. A modern dualsport adds mirrors, horn, and usually some more road amenities...like a cush-hub rear wheel, vibe-reduction features, passenger accomodations, an odometer/trip, and a wider overall gearspread.
    Adv bikes typically add range and comfort features, often for a passenger too, like a fairing, more cylinders for power/smoothness, fuel range, payload capacity, and electrical charging capacity. They're long-range dirt-capable touring bikes, designed to slab across a continent, then tackle challenging dirt roads, with the focus being on long-range slab capability, whereas dualsports are usually less focused on long-range slabbing, and more on shorter and/or slower pavement runs to retain more dirt ability by being lighter, more agile, more durable, and easier to fieldfix.

    Scrambler is more of a marketing term these days, but I think the traditional definition is:
    Scrambler: a street bike that is adapted for riding off-road.
    Dual-Sport: a dirt bike that is adapted to riding on the street.
    That On Two Wheels scrambler comparo is the benchmark for quality moto content.

    • @tobparker
      @tobparker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. This is maybe the first true production scrambler, even if that's sort of an oxymoron. The world has changed, and Ducati and Triumph are filling the actual needs of buyers. No shame in having a scrambler-looking Icon or Street. Where I live, the streets require something a bit tougher, but I don't want a true off-roader. Adventure bikes are the new scramblers, and the new scramblers are really naked adventure bikes. I just rode the Triumph Tiger (on an actual adventure) and the 1200 XC. The XC is so much nicer for the real world, and I'd happily take it into the dirt. Just because it came from the factory doing the job of a scrambler doesn't mean it's not a scrambler.

    Other than having to find the right parts and do the labor, is there a benefit to buying a stock scrambler vs buying a dual sport and putting some retro-looking after market stuff like a bigger tank, round headlight, and wider leather seat? And taking off fairings? Seems like it would be nice to have that dual sport value to performance ratio with the looks of a scrambler.

      I can see more point to cafe racers than over-weight scramblers that are hard to pick up if they get dropped. Dropping them must happen often when off road.
      Cafe racers are like sports cars on the road. More streamlined, a bit uncomfortable, but to the purpose of going and handling that bit better than less purposeful vehicles.
      Scramblers look like hard to pick up and handle dirt bikes. If off road you'd be better off with a lighter dirt bike.

    The craziest part is that I was looking at a scrambler before watching this video. You and FortNine are my favorite channels by far.

    xD it reminds me somewhat of how I took my 1995 XJ600 offroading a few times (it got stollen in the woods by a crackhed, I now have a 1992 XJ600, and im getting a tracker for it lol)

    I’m currently building a different type of scrambler, people like converting the old street bikes into scramblers (cbs, bmws) but I’m actually taking a Honda xr250, and converting this dirt bike into a scrambler. It’s the opposite of the classic scramblers, but I feel more true to the idea than any currently produced “scrambler”

    Just bought a 2020 Scrambler Icon and love it whatever the purists think. It's a great all-round urban machine with excellent capabilities for fun outings on twisties. Fast enough for most situations but obviously not meant to ride at 120km/h on the motorway for hours. Horses for courses and for Paris and it's surroundings, I can't think of a better motorcycle. Although if I had a bigger garage, I could probably add another 5 different bikes just for variety.

    Going to watch later but I want a scrambler to be my first vehicle for college and hopefully keep it long enough to move to Mexico with. I already have an ATV but I want a two wheeler, probably a Ducati Sixty2. I know little to nothing about bikes but I still love em

    Good video. I always thought dirt bikes have some sort of ancestral connection to scramblers.

    My mate has just brought one of these, 2017 . Can someone explain the clutch? When he takes off on a hill and releases the clutch it drops the revs automatically for a smooth take off. What is that called? Sorry for noob question.

    I'm looking to get a new bike, used to ride a cruiser and looking to change things up. I'm doing my research but was hoping someone could give me a short explanation of the major differences between a scrambler and a dual-sport. I live in a metropolitan area but with tons of messed up roads and patches of gravel. I just wanna be able to handle the crappy street terrain and be able to hit a dirt road from time to time.
