Been doing BJJ for 8 years, but never have seen such great videos to put everything together in a great overview. Helps just to watch one then go roll!
@captainzorikh from what my instructor has told me, you're supposed to keep your outside leg planted and bridge slightly while pulling your inside arm in so that you can recover a laying-on-your-side position. You should only lock your half guard when your opponent is attempting to pass.
BJJ already blows my mind with its chess-like antics every day but THIS REALLY REALLY BLEW MY MIND LIKE NOTHING ELSE, especially the rolly/spinny moves like 2:36 and 6:30... I mean I've taken college math classes like multi-variable calculus that require visualizing weird solutions in multiple dimensions but this video puts them all to shame! Every engineer, chess player, and intellectual person should be exposed to the mind-bending beauty of BJJ.
Your rapid fire techniques are perfect. You are not supposed to get everything down watching the video a couple times. You watch the video indefinitely and train while working key techniques that fit your style. Its perfect and its been improving my Jiu Jitsu. Even the proper Shrimping tutorial has improved my hip escapes both front and reverse. Thank you and keep up the great work
Awesome video. Awesome helpful series. Thanks for making this. Sometimes people forget not only how expensive intructionals are but also the fact that fighters are always broke. Thanks again, big time.
man...i REALLY like all your vids....like seriously these are just really good reference videos that showcase alot of options from a few positions in a way that really gets me thinking more about those psotions. if there was a place i felt i didn't have as many options from so i never worked on it well now i do lol. i mean these vids are really good at getting you to think about sub's of course, but really alot of control
I really like the approach you are using to make your videos. I think you are the first who did these small vids with many fast following techniques in it. It is nice to see the whole variety of possible techniques from a certain position.
@captainzorikh Your job in the half guard is ALWAYS to get on your side and try to get the one underhook. If you're flat on your back, you have almost no attacks or sweeps available, and you will be passed. If your on your right side, you your right hand to block your opponent's left hand. Otherwise, he can get head and arm control and flatten you out. You can think of your full-guard the same way. Try to be slightly on your side. You will have more dynamic movement.
I was just in class today. We learned a new counter from half guard and I was able to use it in the free rolling later. However once again I did find myself flat under someone's half guard and though I had double underhooks, my head was on the wrong side. I guess at my level "don't allow them to do that" is not a fully applicable strategy yet :)
Just went through this video very slowly and took notes.. I'm a smaller beginner, and im always in this position! Thanks very much ill be studying this and hopefully have some success, thanks!
Watching this at half speed is super helpful for processing the different steps of the techniques. It’s also unintentionally hilarious, because the voiceover now sounds like he’s had about seven shots of Jameson.
Your videos are really great! Seeing all these many options in quick succession are making it easy for me to select a few to incorporate. Have you thought about making each one an animated GIF? I know that's a lot of work but I had to ask.
Wow, mind blown! I'm a blue belt and this is a lot to decipher. I don't even know where to begin. I think just the recognition there is a whole you can do on the bottom. Seeing points where I think I'm passed is actually the opening for a submission or sweep. Amazing. Thank you!.
Awesome, most of the techniques are pretty much self explanatory as well which is even better I'm making a note right now to drill that calf slicer and kimura tonight
also i've already showed 1 or 2 ppl at my school ur 55 closed guard tech vid and they liked it. im gonna make it a point to show my instructor, i'm sure he'd appreciate them
im only a beginner but watching this has taught me something very valuable...never stay on your back!!! its all about angles...i cant wait to see how much easier it is to defend when im actually in the right position! lol, thanks
same! The reason is because whenever someone is going from sidemount to full, you will use half guard to stop it. When you are escaping mount, using a elbow escape, you will end up in half guard. Half guard is a non-negatiable -- especially against bigger opponents who get dominant positioning over you.
That was amazing, thank you very much for your videos sir, the rolling triangle and rolling omoplata were complete jaw droppers for me and I hope my friends don't mind rolling with me tomorrow so I can practice these moves. Thank you again for these videos.
HOLY SHIT!!! That toe hold is sick dude! I'm one of the smallest members of my gym so I find myself in bottom positions often. This will be a game changer for sure! Thank you!
THIS IS SOOOOO AWESOME!!! As are all your vids!!! And still CONFUSING AS ffffffffffff I can watch all these over & over INCLUDING THE OTHER TEACHERS TOO!!! Thanks for you kind information and SHARING YOUR ABILITIES!!! Signed, WANTON FOLLOWER
did that for a long time didnt have the time or money to train it help me a lot ..back then agaisnt a white belt i did good.. but not a collored belt...
Thank you! Please show us what to do with full opposition. So far in my practice my opponent flattens me out and I don't have all that space to work with.
Good stuff. Half guard is my main thing. One question: what is your counter if the guy on top hugs your legs and sprawls? I use a Kimura, but it doesn`t always work.
Seeing this makes me realize how much I still need to learn
I could watch this a hundred times a day.

As a half guard player, I love seeing these techniques get out there. Thanks for making this.
Been doing BJJ for 8 years, but never have seen such great videos to put everything together in a great overview. Helps just to watch one then go roll!
I remember having to really search to find the odd new technique but now vids like this make it so much easier.
Thanks for your work.
The sheer breadth of knowledge of a black belt never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for putting these together.

Awesome video. Awesome helpful series. Thanks for making this. Sometimes people forget not only how expensive intructionals are but also the fact that fighters are always broke. Thanks again, big time.
Took me a while to realize how half and closed were more my style then most open guard variations.
FOUND THIS VIDEO AFTER 10 YEARS. ITS STILL GOLD DAMN!

You're putting out some of the best stuff on the internet right now.

thank you jason for loading this amazing stuff up.....i include it in my grappling style....please keep on the good work.....
i'm loving all these reference videos, so many options i'd never thought about or heard of.

Fantastic video. The demonstrator moves so smoothly.

I say this sincerely. Shut this video off and go watch Gordon and Danaher’s half guard system. This was great stuff a decade ago
Awesome, most of the techniques are pretty much self explanatory as well which is even better I'm making a note right now to drill that calf slicer and kimura tonight
Thank you for the rolling omoplata attack at the end.
also i've already showed 1 or 2 ppl at my school ur 55 closed guard tech vid and they liked it. im gonna make it a point to show my instructor, i'm sure he'd appreciate them
Very nice reflections on the half guard. I really liked the toe lock from deep half. Lots of fun variations I'm going to bring up in class!
Guys. Seriously keep this up!
Loved the techniques, I have never even seen the waiter guard before so it was mind blowing especially!
im only a beginner but watching this has taught me something very valuable...never stay on your back!!! its all about angles...i cant wait to see how much easier it is to defend when im actually in the right position! lol, thanks
absolutely incredible. i am just beginning and notice I am always in this position wanted to get some ideas. thanks
SAMEE haha
lmao
Tyson Arden I use it a lot. I've got a lot of sweeps and submissions by using the half guard, both during training and tourneys.

incredible this video was posted 11 years ago this was before the other BJJ youtube channels
Me and my friends dont have this sport in our town soo we must training by youtube! This video is soo helpfull!

Definitely giving me ideas to start being more active instead of locking down in the bottom
HOLY SHIT!!! That toe hold is sick dude! I'm one of the smallest members of my gym so I find myself in bottom positions often. This will be a game changer for sure! Thank you!

Good stuff. Half guard is my main thing. One question: what is your counter if the guy on top hugs your legs and sprawls? I use a Kimura, but it doesn`t always work.
