I used to work in the Fex Ex Office store in downtown Santa Fe and the most tenured employee always told me pottery MUST go into a double box and that it was the only way to avoid damage.
Another great video. My favorite parts are when you share stories from your experience, and I love that you clearly love making the videos. Thank you, Jon the Potter!
For someone looking forward to sell pottery on Etsy one day very soon I'm glad I watched your video as I was very much concerned and puzzled on how I would approach this part. Thanks a lot! -sincerely, a fellow (neophyte) Potter
The first time I shipped pottery....a $300 order from Louisiana to Ohio. Customer said she thought all was well until the UPS truck backed over the box & crushed it. LOL! The next day I destroyed my shoulder, so I was out! Studio has been locked tight for years, but you've inspired me to start again!! Love your videos...thanks!!!
One of the pottery groups (Hobby Potters) that I am a part of on Facebook was recently talking about shippig issues and I think they'd love to see this video! Thanks so much for sharing!
Yay!!! I just ordered one!!! I’m so happy! I would have to say though my main shipping issue is sending more than one piece at a time. It just gets so expensive to ship. I just shipped 15 jewelry dishes and 2 broke, so I got the $300 insurance that I put on it. And made 2 more and sent, then all was good, but double box is the way to go. I just make sure to send things super early so you have time to remake the items.
Yeah the shipping can be expensive, I am just starting to figure out how much everything is to ship and how to do all that charging with shipping and handling etc.! Thanks for buying the mug!!
Perfect timing. I'm packing my siblings' Christmas gifts tonight to ship, ironically, to Texas. I've been putting it off because I'm so nervous about shipping.
I love the mug I bought from you in your first restock- so I had to come back and grab another one as a Christmas gift for my husband too! Also this tutorial is super helpful for when I (hopefully) finally start shipping my own pottery, thanks!
I wish i would have watched this a few days ago. Sent a mug to my mom, packed it so nicely but only one box... carriers must have jumped on it over and over, it was shattered into so many small pieces. Next time! Just an excuse to make the same mug again and better. Love your channel!
aaah you make me giggle. I was cracking up :) hehe And Thanks so much for this tip!! .. i've had some pottery breaking and it's definitely a huge bummer! I will be packing this way now FOR SURE! THANK YOU :)
Thank you for putting more mugs on Etsy! I am fascinated by that Northern Lights glaze, and just ordered your “big” mug. Yup, I am one of those freaks that love big mugs. 😂
Great video! I loved how much fun you were having kicking that box around! Double boxing really works! Ha ha! I also wanted to mention that Etsy has discounted shipping through USPS. You can just print out the label from your Etsy Seller Dashboard and tape it to the box and give it to your mail carrier when they deliver your mail. It saves money and a trip to the post office so you have more time to make pottery, play with Ryder or kick around boxes! 😉
Hey man its my 2nd video and i already subscribe u your work really motivate me cause your work is more then a potter just keep continue it and i wana tell u am a student of ceramic design
I just did a video of the way I pack my pottery! I call it the coffin method. It’s essentially the same but to save space I wrap the pottery in a cardboard coffin after wrapping it. Then I put that pottery burrito 🌯 into a box and fill all the space with paper or packing peanuts work too. Then vooalahhh! All the energy transfers to the packing materials surrounding the cardboard pottery burrito!
Thanks for the video! First time I shipped one of my Etsy potted stone 🌵 buyer got it broken. It was so embarrassing, but I have another order I'm gonna try to ship out with this method. Thanks again!
This year I've had two coffee mugs broken by the USPS. I'm heartbroken. Why didn't you go up one box to 8x8? Or could you put the 6x6 box in a bubble wrap envelope? I sent a pottery cup in a bubble wrap (after wrapping in a lot of bubble wrap. It didn't break, but everytime I send something in a box it breaks (USPS).
I sent some of my pottery, to my family, that were some of my first things I made after not doing it for 20 or so years, they arrived broken. 😞 Thanks for this.
lol! Way to make an incredibly boring topic super entertaining and funny. I loved watching you beat the crap out of a box of pottery, even better that it survived! This couldn't be more timely for me, I shipped my first double boxed pots out because of this vid, and that alleviated some nerves.
This is kind of random but that frost over Waconia the other day was really pretty the other day and I was wondering what it looked like from above and now I know from that last shot and it is really beautiful
I am getting requests to ship my pottery now. Where do you get shipping materials for a low cost? Boxes, bubble wrap, peanuts? Is the USPS the best deal for shipping? What size boxes do you use for 2 mugs, 4 mugs, 6 mugs, 8 mugs?
That was a great video. And even if would have broker you could have edited it out. LOL Glad it didn't though. Keep the video's coming. Love how cute your son is too. As for USPS.com I have an account, print out my postage, then schedule for them to come pick up the next day so I never have to go to the post office. I buy stamps that way as well. I order all my priority box for *free* from them too and they deliver them to me as well.
New subscriber! I’m really enjoying your videos and tutorials. I recently started making pottery in school and love it, even wanting to make more ceramic work outside of school! I’m wondering what some good starter kilns are to have at home. Thanks!
Wow does it really take months to make set of 12 for dining? Im learning on the wheel at the moment for 2 weeks now, and made some mugs already, you are a great inspiration to me, never stop or give up man, lots of love and many many thanks for all the inspirations.
I should have watched this 4 days ago before shipping 4 boxes to family and friends with my favorite babies (i'm new, every pot that turns out well and beautiful is beloved) and so far the first box arrived with one major break and the other bowl okay. I'm so bummed to have lost the one that broke.... it was my favorite. I thought I used enough bubble wrap and peanuts and paper and paid for Fragile care.... but noooooohhhh. So apparently I have to do a two box method..... sigh.
I am shipping UPS and every other mug is damaged. I am on my 3rd claim for a UPS refund. The USPS also has damaged mugs. No matter if I put it in a box or wrap it inside a padded envelope. I've tried both. With shipping & packing prices going up, to ensure that the cups don't break (box inside a box inside a box) costs a lot of money. How much do you charge for shipping?
Hi John, love love love your pottery and your videos. I have just started selling and posting my pottery, but being vegan I dont want to use polystyrene or bubble wrap. Any ideas what I could use instead. Thanks
Which shipping service do you use for international shipping? When I looked up USPS prices, the cost of shipping one box was going to be more than what I would sell a piece of pottery for :O Thanks very much in advance!
Kelly Eefsting the cost of the shipping supplies like bubble wrap, boxes and tape are the “handling” fee in “shipping and handling”. So the buyer reimburses the seller for the supplies used when they pay the shipping and handling charge. I also include the cost of my promotional materials like business cards, post card and stickers in this charge. Remember that each customer is only paying for the materials sent to them so it’s a very small charge around one or two dollars at most. Etsy has a place to plug in the handling fee so that no matter where your item is being shipped when the shipping and handling fees are calculated the handling charge is included. Hope this helps. 😊
Yes great explanation Christiane! I would just add that when you buy shipping materials in bulk from commercial places like Uline it drastically cuts down on the costs. Boxes can be anywhere from 2-5 dollars at UPS or Target, but Uline packs of 25 are less than a buck a piece!
Jonthepotter would it be cheaper to use flat rate (free boxes) from usps? Or is cheaper to sell mugs with the Uline type boxes? I am new to this and clueless. Thx for this video
Dude... the climbing wall though. You're killin' it brotha. Thanks for the inspiration. Like you said, "A rising tide lifts all boats." I'm just getting started, so the vids are much appreciated. Keep it up. Check out themuddymoth on insta. See you there...

Awesome!! Just received your awesome soaps!! Thanks so much!!
@@Jonthepotter You're very welcome! I enjoy your videos, so it seemed a fair trade. :) Merry Christmas!! Don't forget about the soap dishes! haha!

Oh wow, really ! a rock climbing wall on the back of the garage. That’s such a great idea. 👍🏻✌️
Can you add a link to your Etsy account? Thanks
www.etsy.com/shop/Jonthepotter
Glad your showing how to. I'm packing mine and sending it to California. Ups is known to throw the packages. Thanks for the tips!

Wow, pretty awesome. i was a little squeeze watching you throw that off the garage but i am so glad it worked!! Good to know!!!
OMG! That is the best video you’ve ever made ( I watched them all). Love the demonstration that it will not break. Good job!
I saw Old Forge Creations uses biodegradable cornstarch peanuts, that might be something to look into as well! Great video
Love your video! Please dont quit pottery!
Haha I think I am over it now!
aaah you make me giggle. I was cracking up :) hehe And Thanks so much for this tip!! .. i've had some pottery breaking and it's definitely a huge bummer! I will be packing this way now FOR SURE! THANK YOU :)
Fab video Jon. We sell pottery on ebay and this video has been a godsend to us xxx
That was a great video.. Learnt box in box method... Thank you so much.. Lots of love from India...
Thank you for a great packing and shipping video and sharing your heart breaking experience of poor packaging....
Ha ha ha, That was brilliant! Now I know how to wrap things properly. Nice one Jon, another worth while educational video. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
❤️ I love how you are after you open the package! So funny I laughed out loud! Much success to you Jon!
Thank you for putting more mugs on Etsy! I am fascinated by that Northern Lights glaze, and just ordered your “big” mug. Yup, I am one of those freaks that love big mugs. 😂

Holy over-engineered, love it.

It was awesome wasn't it!?
thank you!!
Could you do more videos about running the business of pottery? This one and the one on pricing were helpful. Thanks!
Yes for sure1
!!
Oh my goodness that gave me the such a nervous feeling in my stomach, so pleased it worked 😂
MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄
I am getting requests to ship my pottery now. Where do you get shipping materials for a low cost? Boxes, bubble wrap, peanuts? Is the USPS the best deal for shipping? What size boxes do you use for 2 mugs, 4 mugs, 6 mugs, 8 mugs?
Minnesota looks a lot like Norway! Glad the mug didn´t break :-)
Elisabeth Bue it does get pretty cold here 🥶
That was awesome!
Thanks for the video this helped me a lot. I shipped a clay dragon once and the box was destroyed and crushed. But the dragon lived somehow.
They need a laughing face like !!!! I loved this 😂
What a perfect timing for this video!!! thank you!! And how do you pack 8 plates?
Plates are so hard to pack and ship....big boxes! I try not to do many plates...haha:)

That is the way to do it!
We had a mess of mugs that looked like they tied it behind the truck.. luckily insured and friend who was patient with us
yeah wish I saw this a week ago, all my presents I made in ceramic I class broke in transit.
How would wrapping plates be like? Will you have to individually bubble wrap each plate? 😥
Came here to watch Jon throw the box off the roof. 🤣
New subscriber! I’m really enjoying your videos and tutorials. I recently started making pottery in school and love it, even wanting to make more ceramic work outside of school! I’m wondering what some good starter kilns are to have at home. Thanks!
My first started kiln was an old kiln sitter I found on craigslist for 200.00, I fired that thing about 400 times til it started to collapse...
Wow does it really take months to make set of 12 for dining? Im learning on the wheel at the moment for 2 weeks now, and made some mugs already, you are a great inspiration to me, never stop or give up man, lots of love and many many thanks for all the inspirations.
Large dinner plates take forever!!! I have to let them dry so slow so they don't warp!
Will this method work for a ceramic Christmas tree?
Definitely an accurate demonstration of how shipping companies treat anything marked fragile. :-)
eta: ARGH! Why are there no items in your shop?!?!??
Where is the best place to order boxes and other shipping materials?
Are there any more alternatives i mean if we don't have some of ur material to pack.....Plz do tell
how much extra does it cost to do this wrap technique? Do you add it to the cost to customers?
Only a few extra dollars, I would add a little to the S & H costs yes.
good job ^^
I should have watched this 4 days ago before shipping 4 boxes to family and friends with my favorite babies (i'm new, every pot that turns out well and beautiful is beloved) and so far the first box arrived with one major break and the other bowl okay. UPS driver stands on the sidewalk near the front door & heaves the packages onto the concrete porch. 😮
how can we do this sustainably?

Lots of packing materials and big boxes. Bubble wrap is the best with peanuts or airbags around it!
Hi John, love love love your pottery and your videos. I have just started selling and posting my pottery, but being vegan I dont want to use polystyrene or bubble wrap. Any ideas what I could use instead. Thanks

How much more does a bigger box add to the shipping?
nvm! I heard at the end
Jow dobyou do plates? Or big pots! Teapots with apendages?
I have one video on plates!! I will do videos on teapots in the future!
Do you pack as items sell or pack in advance?
Jennifer Allara - I thought that was a good idea too. Have the boxes labeled and Bam! Speedy delivery even if you’re busy.
Not yet, but my wife and I thought that would be a great idea, only issue would be if some orders are multiple , it makes sense to package together.
Jonthepotter I also thought it would be hard to keep track of what’s inside each box.
Love the vid! Isn't this pretty expensive though to use that much shipping materials/boxes??
Kelly Eefsting the cost of the shipping supplies like bubble wrap, boxes and tape are the “handling” fee in “shipping and handling”. John! Do you cut your pieces off a bat or do you let them dry without?!
Most of the time I cut them off!
Depends on what it is though.
When a basketball player works for the part-time delivery.
jajajajajajajaj, this is what i needed to see. thank you jon :D
cant find your etsy shop. could you add it to the video please?
Etsy Shop is www.etsy.com/jonthepotter
Make pottery mug in the cost of package in India
Mind: blown
Still feel anxiety when you drop it. Stop.
Oh wow 😊😂😂
“And I’ll put that box in a box” -ezma
you are nuts funny!
Why’d you do your car that way though? 😂
Sold out already?!?! 😭😭😭
Lol, says "I'm just gonna put a tiny bit more." Proceeds to use like another 2 feet of bubble wrap
Dude... the climbing wall though.
You're killin' it brotha. Thanks for the inspiration. Like you said, "A rising tide lifts all boats."
I'm just getting started, so the vids are much appreciated.
Keep it up. Check out themuddymoth on insta.
See you there...
😆👍
I didn't know packing peanuts still existed. Must be banned in Ca or something
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thats kind of overdoing it with the packaging
Lol you crazy
Dude, go less on the coffee. Getting excited over packing pottery is over the top
