Taking us back to 2 years before the end of steam on the mainline, to the summer of 1966, the Great Central Railway's excellent Railways at Work event saw a focus on the transition from the old to the new and look at how British Rail started re-inventing its image in the mid-1960s. The event held 56 years to the day since the final BR Steam Hauled Railtour - the 15 Guinea Special on 11th August 1968 - saw period dressed re-enactors to taking part in this event alongside period commercial vehicles. The GCRs extensive freight fleet was in use, with three goods sets (tankers, vans & pick up goods) in use over the weekend.
Quorn and Woodhouse station was the centre-piece of the event with trains shunting into the up yard for loading and unloading. A crane was on hand to unload vehicles off wagons and an class 08 shunter as yard pilot for shunting duties.
The double track action was impressive and some trains passing at speed (including two goods passing twice) featured in the video between Loughborough and Quorn.
1966 World Cup Winning celebrations were still in evident at the event with football 'hooligans' causing some trouble for the 'local constabulary'.
