Who Builds Liminal Spaces?

  • Everybody knows what a liminal space is, and those who don't have an easy time finding out. While real life liminal spaces are a bit more transitional and temporary, liminal spaces found in video games, comics, and books demonstrate a haunting steadfastness that makes you wonder, "Who built this?"
Side note: Jacob Geller has made a video on each and every piece of media used in this video. His works inspire me enormously and I hope this is distinct enough to not look as though its plagiarizing any of his work.
    Media Featured:
    NaissanceE, Blame!, House of Leaves
    Music (In Order of Appearance):
The Final Station OST - Nowhere
Clint Mansell - The Night Cafe
Thierry Zaboitzeff - Prométhée Part 1a
Silent Hill 2 OST - A World of Madness
    Pär Boström - Trollslottet II
    Hex System - Revelation

I like how you combine the aspects of different pieces of media in accordance with your overarching subject, it's a really entertaing narration style.

I was very surprised that this popped up on my feed, I've been watching video essay type stuff for a bit as it's a good way to pass time and it was only after I finished watching it that I realized it only had 130 views, this is some really good stuff.
    Keep it up!

Love me some liminal spaces, though this went a different direction than I thought, it was an incredibly intriguing video. Very cool.

I gotta say the architecture of the infinite (feel like i juat stole a jacob geller title there :P) is sooo fascinating to me.
i think its uniquely uncanny - the constructed spaces that are so familiar but NOT human in the way that we are finite. We can only see so far, do so much, live so long and yet these infinite spaces, apparantly designed for us, defy even our most basic truth that we will not be around forever.
and i just think thats the coolest thing

It is such a coincidence that I watch this video right after giving the game a try…
I still believe though that the kind of liminality we’re talking about isn’t really a transitional space unless we mean in a grand scale in which case everything is liminal
I’ve heard other people talking about it and I have to agree that it’s about the feeling the place gives more so than anything since some things seem to have traits that a liminal space has but feels normal anyways
It’s the uncanny valley for places instead of people
But you are absolutely right though, the unnatural nature of human structures to begin with makes liminal spaces what they are
Humans made them for a purpose and when you exaggerate it to the extremes
    Well
    You either get nightmare fuel
    Or a comfortable silent space

The phrase is such a misnomer. They’re more like discontextualized places or no-places.

Ever watch the anime girls last tour?
It's very much has this feeling. The handful of human left on a planet where Maga cities stack on top of each other. Which serve as home to large industrial complexes.
War torn. You spend the name following two children who can remember the world from before trying to figure out what they are looking at and why they are alone.
    It's wonderful

But until then, I quite enjoyed the video !
