When putting the screws back, avoid over-tightening them. Screws into plastic will easily strip the threads. Generally I stop as soon as I feel any resistance.

I've done repairs on a lot DS4 controllers and only about 3% of them were battery related. Mostly ended up being analog replacements. I'm glad you showed people how is it to disassemble the controller as most people are too scared to do.
I would have to agree. I've worked on PS3 and PS4 controllers. I've only ran across one bad battery and I have controllers that are more than 10 years old. But I also have several so it's a lot easier to maintain good battery charging techniques in order to keep them lasting!
My ps3 controller is like 8 or 9 yrs. And it still works great. It definitely doesn’t last as long as it used to. But it lasted 7 yrs holding a full charge. I swear things these days last half the life as the old stuff.

As someone who just bought a used ps3 controller im amazed how good it still holds a charge. Different things like adaptive triggers/vibration will also use more battery.
I learned the key to having a longer battery is to switch the settings to only 1 minute. That means that if I’m not using my controller in a minute or over. It shuts off on its own. It’s a beautiful feature 👍
This is next-level in terms of its practicality. At first I was worried about breaking the controller or voiding a warranty, but honestly who cares? Worst case scenario, you’re back where you started.
As an extra step I would recommend checking the controller still works after installing the battery and before fully reassembling it! Just so if the new battery is faulty or not connected properly its easier to fix the issue. Brilliant video though
The common convenience of having a battery compartment should be something standard with all controllers. There's zero reason why you should have to go through that many steps just to remove the battery.

We endured this problem with our PS4 controllers for a long while, our only pair of controllers lasted for 20-30 minutes at a time, and our charging cord setup kept changing every crescent moon. I proposed the idea to swap out the batteries after researching a bit about the batteries in the controllers, but my dad found a cheap and extremely easy alternative by buying two whole controllers with someone in state, rather than go through the hassle it can be to find rather specific batteries at any pawn shops, stores, or online.

Hey John, love your videos. I'm now on my second ps5 controller. Battery on the first really started dying quick. After about 10 months. I have a new second gen black one. So far it's pretty good. But one thing I've noticed with these controllers is the joysticks can get dirty quickly and too easily. My Xbox one x controller lasted longer and was built better. Shame. Still love my ps5 though.
Degrading and dying batteries are one reason why I love that Microsoft stays with the battery compartment on their controllers. Happy to see that these are still relatively easy to get to, but having to pry off buttons to get to the battery when they could've probably just put a door you could unscrew back there is a bit ridiculous.
@@allwillknowmii1314 Yeah but they make it harder for you to change the battery so that most people will just by a new controller because they don't know how to access it.
I am not only impressed, but happy that the PS5 is very DIY friendly. It is very easy to mod your controller and console due to the simplicity of disassembling and assembling it all. I've modded my controller to add LED, transparent buttons, and added the mouse click bumpers. You can do all of the stuff yourself without shelling out a whole bunch of money to get a pre-modded controller.
I had stick drift with mine and fixed it by spraying contact cleaner while holding the stick down and has been fixed for the last 2 months. Easy fix for people having that issue.
Battery swaps are always nice. Used to do that for phones every 2 years, since it was cheaper than getting a new one. Can't really do that with newer models that much, but at least the degredation is not that bad. And you can always just buy a powerbank to power all your devices. Concise video!
for phones is kind of different. tech has been boosted to the point that alot of tech has become irrelevant(basically most phones from budget and up can cover all your needs including long battery times)

"Xbox controllers still use AA batteries, yikes" Yeah the point is to give you the option and you can always buy extra rechargeable battery packs if one goes bad.
There's no yikes about it. Microsoft gives you multiple options of charging your controller without it damaging your controller. -Wired, what most people use rechargeable battery packs, or if you're really desperate AA Batteries. This is the one that baffles me with Sony. I used to mock Xbox for still having batteries but man in the long run. The small inconvenience of charging some batteries outweighs the ps4 and ps5 controllers. I have now got a large battery bank on the couch with me with my ps4 controllers. The ps5 controls are great but the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers just seem to drain the ps5 control so fast. I wish Sony would make battery modules instead for ps6 or make controls with much bigger mAh battery units.
It's actually pretty amazing to see how easy it is to maintenance the PS5, I really appreciate that Sony, all while without voiding warranty I assume since there are no stickers
Ive had my dual shock 4 since 2017 😂 no battery issues i just fixed r2 by myself coz the silicon wears out Id say if you use them without too much force they last long
Same. Always just have the 2 controllers and they last. Idd the trigger silicone tabs need replacing and somethings the joysticks need airdusting and some contact cleaner sprayed on them. Never needed a replacement controller if you know how to do some basic repairs. Keep the batt between 10 and 90% and alternate between to controllers and you should be golden.

I have to admit, I like the approach of the xbox controllers better, where I have both the option to use the controller wired without wearing out any batteries, or can just replace them within seconds without any tools.
This really looks like a first gen problem, I mean I used my PS4 controller during many years and I used it like crazy and nothing happened but somehow this controller has battery issues even though it was launched just in the past few years, that's why you should always wait for the slim version of any console.
this controller burns the battery faster. batteries have a life cycle that dies every time you charge it. the avg battery life is around 1.5 to 2 years depending on the size of the battery vs how often you charge it. if you charge it daily expect it to last around 2 years but if its an ipad for example that last a week before a charge well than you are looking at 4 to 6 years.
This is why I love Xbox controllers. I've never had any issues with them from personal experience and I don't have to worry about ripping open the controller to replace a battery, I had one for several years and it still works like factory new
I understand the appeal for built in batteries but rechargeable AA'S just seem more convenient. If you put the controller back together and have one part that isn't aligned properly(such as the triggers) or if you break something by accident such as the clips then its just an annoyance. Also when you or your kids forget to charge the controllers and you end up having to wait to play anything.
@@William_Saliba True. But if the options are sitting close to a tv for 45 minutes or hot swap some AA's while the others recharge in under 10 seconds then it just seems more convientient. Chargeable batteries can last up to 3 plus years dual sense and other chargeable controllers are always reliable you can run out of batteries USB type c makes controllers charge way faster so now batteries are more of a inconvenience since you are spending money in the long run and you keep up with having to know how much you got left

@@Koll-Manee Back in 2014 when I owned a PS4 the first time around I had no problems with the controller that came with the console for the two years I owned it. Not sure why I’ve been having such bad luck with Sony’s controllers this time around.
I have to wonder as to why they made it a bit of a hassle to replace the battery, while an Xbox’s battery is easily assessable. Sure, the Xbox’s controller doesn’t come with a rechargeable battery, but they are pretty cheap, from an official one to regular rechargeable ones you can get for ten to 20 dollars. Is it because they just want people to buy a new controller and get that extra profit? Still, it’s good to see how it’s done on a PS5 controller. When I eventually get one, I’ll keep it in mind if something ever happens. Videos like this helps save people a TON of money and time.
You've brought up a valid point where certain Playstation fans have been giving Sony some imaginary W for XBOX using battery packs + AA when I've always seen that as more of an advantage. I do hope XBOX starts producing controllers with the haptics and force feedback triggers they've had a patent for their own since 2018. I can do without touch pad, speaker, microphone and other Dualsense features
@@lordxboss5700 I’ve seen people like that too. Honestly my first pair of rechargeable batteries lasted about ten full years before they finally died, and getting replacements was easy since I just needed the batteries instead of both them and the recharging plug-in (with both it was about $20, but for the batteries it was less than $10 for four of them. I’d say they more than paid for themselves!). Having the batteries like that also removes a possible way it can break. Not everyone can do this, or not trust themselves to without breaking it. I don’t even trust myself to do that! So if there is a surge and it fries your batteries instead of the controller while it’s plugged in, then you save your a LOT of hassle if it’s like the Xbox’s. Also the haptics and force feedback sounds to be really tiring in your fingers, and others have said that, but as long as you can turn it off if you want, I don’t see the harm in having it as an option. Microsoft might not want to include it to help keep the price of it down. It already costs us $60 per one, while the PS5’s costs $70.
@@KHMDarkness Ya I found a Energizer kit with 2 battery packs and charging station and it's perfect. It's a nice stand for the controllers and they're always charged. @@rsh650 I said ‘not everyone’, which doesn’t assume only the person in the video or people you can hire can do this. It means that some people either can’t do it for one reason or another, or don’t trust themselves to try and repair a $70 controller and would rather pay someone who has done it before to do it instead. Again, that’s almost $100 in your hands, and doing one small think wrong can break it, or even make the buttons click weirdly. I’m personally very particular about that, to where I can’t use third party controllers because of how bad they feel. So if there is a chance I could mess that up, however slim, I wouldn’t trust myself with that. Probably making something out of nothing, but still.
I'm so glad my retailer where I got my ps4 and ps5 from has an excellent warranty policy. If my sticks or battery give out within the 2 year warranty period, I can either get a replacement or a full refund. This saved me a bucketload of cash between 2020 and 2021, I've had over 16 DS4 controllers with stick drifting issues!
Would be nice to know what good charging habits are. I know from my RC hobby that Li-on batteries are stored at 3.85v per cell, and that loses life when stored at full charge, and also empty charge. In a device like this, we simply do not know the voltage so it's not easy to say what charge level works best and moreover, how to charge it there. This is why the iPhone charges overnight partially and only completes the charge when it thinks you're likely to wake up and start using it to drain it to a longer lasting charge.
its just the same with phones. charge it from a usb port (to prevent battery heat), keep it between 20% and 80%, turn off vibration and lights to improve and double the battery life on rumble heavy games. my controller's 5 years old and it still holds 9 hours of charge.
Fun fact: buying a PS5 controller at any Walmart gives you an automatic 30day return policy. Take it home, use it for 4 weeks, and then put it back in the box and take it back to the store with the receipt. In that same trip, buy another one. Rinse and repeat till Sony finally makes a controller that lasts longer than a month of playing.
My ps4 controller didn't get controller drift for almost 3 years and I used it ALOT, barely used my Xbox one s and in one year got controller drift on it

It's still usable(barely) have been wanting to get the black one but heard those new ugly bright colored ones are the only ones that have fixed a few issues/used better parts.
I feel like xbox and playstation could make small tweaks to make their controllers better. Xbox could have their rechargeable pack as the standard default battery when you buy the xbox.(its not as bad for families if they buy more controllers because they can buy a play and charge kit that comes with the controller). Playstation could make a battery compartment that way it would be easy to replace (Also amazing guide 👍👍😊)

The reason the dualsense is lasting less than the dualshock 4 is because you have to turn on the power saving feature that makes the controller turn off automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity. My battery went from last 8 hours to 3 days.
The joystick drift is driving me insane. I bought the console in November, and by January I was already experiencing it. It is -ever-so-slightly but it is there. Makes dealing with the camera manually a hassle to handle if you already have to keep track over the game’s mechanics. I have also noticed a small failure in input recognition. It is not consistent, but every 6-8 inputs I put in, usually the last isn’t recognized by the either the games or the controller. I’m not really sure, but it has cost me so many death in Souls games. Edit2: my PS5 got stolen 🥲. I guess the drift issue no longer matters.
6 months and my dual sense controller is unusable because the controller drift is so bad that it puts maximum tilt in any direction at any time on the left stick. At the same time, the right trigger became so loose that i can't rest my finger on it without it activating. I was going to send it back for warranty but figured it's useless if they just use the same shitty parts.
Never had issues myself, my PS3 Controller that I've had for over a decade is still going strong for crying out loud 🤣 That being said, money isn't an issue, and EB Games won't know the Battery is DEAD since they never test them anyway when trading 😏 then it'd be like I dunno 1/3 the price for a BRAND NEW DualSense (and nothing beats a FRESH, NEEEEEEW Controlly 👍)

Xbox series X controller is significantly superior in build quality compared to the PS5. In addition Xbox's controller battery life also last longer. Further more, changing out the rechargeable battery in the Xbox controller is also easier. To add salt to wounds, Xbox controller suffer much less stick drift compared to PlayStation.
Regarding stick drift, you might just be experiencing product bias or luck of the draw because the analog stick components in the PS5 and Series X controllers are completely identical. Incase you are unaware, those specific parts come from the same manufacturer.

The common convenience of having a battery compartment should be something standard with all controllers. There's zero reason why you should have to go through that many steps just to remove the battery.
There are actually many reasons from an engineering point of view. Also, this is not hard. You just appear to be lazy.

Unless Sony has some hidden crazy battery tech, then no it's not a first gen issue batteries will degrade.
I am so glad this is not a dragged out 15 minute video. Nice short, simple.

Same here its pretty annoying but I got use to it
Xbox > ps
Its a souls game issue due to thw input reading messing up
@@easyw1220 really? I’ve played most of them previously on PS4 and I don’t really remember having this issue. Perhaps my memory is wrong.
The biggest problem isn’t really the battery… its more likely the stick drift
I’ve still had my original since 2020 and works just fine and battery
Never had issues myself, my PS3 Controller that I've had for over a decade is still going strong for crying out loud 🤣
That being said, money isn't an issue, and EB Games won't know the Battery is DEAD since they never test them anyway when trading 😏 then it'd be like I dunno 1/3 the price for a BRAND NEW DualSense (and nothing beats a FRESH, NEEEEEEW Controlly 👍)
Lol eb
@@itsNAGOLS lol what about them? They are competent and have really nice staff here, it's not GameStop 🤣 also there really isn't anywhere else (not in my area, "Mum & Pop Shops" don't really exist either for the most part (at least not like the ones I see from the US 🤷♂️)
@@MrRhysReviews bruh sounds like you from Canada. Do you live under a rock or what?? They changed their name to GameStop.
@@whatdadogdoin7531 Not from Canada lol
Honestly is the best policy brother
You’ll reap what you sow
I’ve always used wired controllers just because I can feel the difference in latency and registration. There’s some good cheap wired controllers out there.
Dang fam get off your knees and close your mouth😂 how much Microsoft paying you to say that?
Regarding stick drift, you might just be experiencing product bias or luck of the draw because the analog stick components in the PS5 and Series X controllers are completely identical. Incase you are unaware, those specific parts come from the same manufacturer.
Lol xbox controllers haven't changed since 360 days. Still need to waste money on batteries. Next gen console with no Next gen controller. Same as xbox one pads tbh. Ps5 controllers are far superior in every way.
As a new ps5 owner I am pretty thankful to find videos like these to help in the future will be saving to liked videos too. I always thought it was pretty hard to take apart the controller lol.
Both my controllers are gen 1 and haven't had any issue whatsoever. I grew up with a techie in the 90s so I generally keep the battery between 20-80%. Reduces battery wear by a lot.
I guess I can count myself lucky I’ve never had this problem. I swapped between 2 controllers for PS4, and doing the same for PS5. Always use power save settings. Never had a problem with battery, drift, or anything. Switch JoyCons on the other hand…
I don't even have a playstation yet I somehow found this useful to watch well done 👍
This is why i still appreciate removable aa battery slots over internal batteries. even then you can usually get battery packs on said controllers
I'll be damned, a video on TH-cam that actually is helpful and straight to the point
no 10 min long video and straight to the point thanks for sharing super useful vid
Nice choice of Final Fantasy 7 in the background John! Keep up the content, always interesting, relevant and to the point!
Recently replaced my laptop battery myself. Doing things on your own and savings bucks feels very satisfactory.
I've had my controllers since launch day! They both still work perfectly!
Dual Sense being easy to repair is such a huge win!
Thanks for the information that will help me 20 years from now.
Seemed odd leaving a like when you've just given me bad news but you give the step by step solution so great stuff!!!!!!!
wow this is handy to know! my PS5 isn't 3 years old, but if it ever stops charging I know what to do! thanks for this :D
I have never had any issues with my PS controllers. My ps3 controllers still work, I still use my ps4 controllers as Bluetooth controller for remote play, and my ps5 remotes are still just like new after over 150 hrs of game play
Some people I know crap on the Xbox controllers for not having build in chargeable batteries, but things like this made me appreciate it a lot, because they do offer official rechargeable ones you can buy and it's super easy to swap out when needed!
I haven’t even had the chance to buy the thing because, every time I try to on ANY platform, it is sold out, looking forward to getting my hands on this baby!
I want this sir to talk about the increase in the drifting of the ps controllers, why and how to repair if its possible. Nice video, like and a new sub
Don’t have any issues, just randomly stumbled across this video, but it’s good to know, thanks !!
THANK YOU FOR EFFORT JOSH BRASSPENIS
Thank you for keeping your videos short. Not bullshit talking like mans youtuber nowadays for more ads and clickbait. Keep that up. Sub!
Great video. Two of my controllers both last less than 4 hrs. This was very well explained and I changed the batteries out no problem. Ty.
I don't have PS5, for now, but it'll useful in the future, thanks :D
Had my ps4 controllers for years, and still in great shape
Great title idea to get people to click it more people need to realize this that not everything lasts and that it’s fine it’s nice you even have a short tutorial on how to safely take apart the controller and reattach the battery 🐐
Had mine since launch day still going strong
My controller started “drifting” recently. It’s a launch version so out of warranty. First time I’ve ever encountered this problem with any Sony controllers I’ve owned. And I’ve been playing since the ps1 days.
This is what I liked about the PS5 controller. It’s so easy to open and modify. It’s like the 360 controller minus the stupid torx screws
Man, I still have my PS2 controllers from my very first PS2....way in 2002...still going strong.
I’ve had my OG controller for ps4 for 5 years. Has been dropped thrown hammered etc and has outlasted all my other controllers. The matte finish is completely gone and it’s shiny and smooth lol.
I don’t own a Ps5 but this video was really good man
I got my ps5 at launch, over 450 hours in the last 2 and a half year
Still using the controller that came with it and no problems so far
I’ve gotten lucky lol, I’ve used the same PlayStation 4 controller since 2015. The battery life has gone down a bit but it still works and holds a charge.
Just bought the PS5 friday. I saw many good tips from you John. Thank you.
Funny thing. for my PS4 I have 3 controllers. Two of them are now about 5 to 6 years old and still work fine. How I did that, I don't know, but I hope my new PS5 controller will have the same lifetime.
