Brother WT 220 CL How to Make it work again.

  • Brother use a coating on the foam roller. This wears away. the resistance decreases over time as the coating wears off . in this way they just measure the wear on the roller not the full status of the waste box. There is also a "ÖMG I am full" switch on the top .. So if you remove the small roller as shown .. you are going to get one message .. STOP .. I'm Full . they you MUST empty and reset that top lever under the cover as shown.
    For toner reset see • Brother printers mfc93...

    .... Takes me back to when I was repairing lasers.... I just moved the metal tag off the steel roller enough that it doesn't contact. When the error light came on I was disappointed... Forgot I took the paper out....all working fine. The waste container had sweet nothing in it. Thanks for doing the ground work for us!

    Thanks dude. The longest part of fixing this was watching your tutorial. After that I just pulled the box, popped the cover off, emptied it out carefully and removed that roller. Its printing right now awesome thanks again!

    Take the roller off, put all in the printer to reset, put back the roller on, and ready to print again.

    Absolute Genius! I replaced the waste toner box and within less than 100 prints had the error again with a brand new box. I did as you said and checked it all. I made sure the contacts were touching under the top black cover. Then removed the little black roller thing from the side of the stainless steel roller from inside the side cover. Checked resistances and got the same values as you. Put printer back together and everything works again. It saves me a few dollars every time it gets full. Thanks for the informative video.

    Thank you very much! I'm frustrated with Brother Philippines because that part, WT-220CL is not available here at the moment and it will take considerable time to source it from their supplier abroad. That would render my printer useless for the duration of the waiting. I'm glad you shared with us a fix to this problem and it WORKED!

    For others desperately looking for a solution after trying everything, here's what i did: The next item to check is the HVPS (High Voltage Power Supply), on my printer (HL-3140CL) it is on the right hand side of the machine. a fair amount of black toner had managed to creep through a gap somewhere and it had collected on the contacts of a ribbon cable and the PCB, so was probably affecting the PCB. I removed the screws holding the board to the printer and managed to get the thin attachment to my vacuum cleaner into the gap and hoover out the toner. Don't be tempted to pull the ribbon cable out of its PCB socket or you'll have to take even more of the printer apart to reconnect it. Now BOTH my new and old Waste Toner boxes work in my printer, so i would say it is fixed! I hope this helps someone

    Thanks to another TH-camr the solution to a malfunctioning WT box is poor electrical contacts. Just remove all metal strips from box and slightly abrade all the contact surfaces with fine emery paper (#400). The cam operated contacts should be in the closed position. The final part of the fix is to clean the three spring loaded contacts inside the machine which make contact with the toner box. Suggest cleaning these initially and then progressing to the contacts within the WT box.

    As with some other people that commented on this video, all of the proposed actions did not help for my printer. I ended up buying a new WT box only to find out (like others) that the printer just claimed the new WT bos was also full...
    I ended up disassembling the High Voltage Power supply board (HVPS) on the right side of the printer. Replacing the HVPS would have solved the problem, but there is a better solution because the HVPS is not in fact broken.
    The contact springs you see inside the printer, connecting to the various replacable items (including the 3 contacts that sense the WT box) are each connected to a long coiled spring that in turn connects to various wires "islands" on the HVPS. Those islands are just a piece of wire routed over the board. I found that THOSE wires were corroded a little (greenish color where the springs touch the wires on the HVPS board).
    After removing the corrosion from those contact-wires on the HVPS and re-assembling it, the WT box errors were finally gone!
    (the service manual was helpful to find out how to easily extract the HVPS -- just a few screws if you know which ones...)
    The people that claimed or assumed the printer is measuring resistance accross these contacts to detect that the WT box is "almost" (or entirely) full are probably right. That's why some could fix the problem by cleaning the contacts on the WT box, and/or by moving that hidden rotary switch back to the "closed" position. But that does not cover all contact problems: contact corrosion on the HVPS side has the same effect: more corrosion = higher resistance, and in the end that's enough to "emulate" a full WT box.

    2023 Update. Turn your printer off before taking everything out. Follow his steps and definitely don't have the middle arm touching the roller. For some reason the fault switch (top of the box) for mine didn't register in the off position so I had to put it in the on position (as in touching) for it to not give the error. PS I actually bought a replacement and had to do this to get it to work. smh two days later.

    I replaced my box with a new one and it made no difference. Just a small clarification. The reason the switch is engaged on both of your boxes and they weigh almost the same is because the switch is normally closed. A small auger fills a compartment below the switch which has a lever attached to the which lever above that is visible. When enough toner is packed against the lever it moves and opens the contact. My old box was a ¼ full. The signal is probably coming from dirty wires on the control board like one of the other viewers commented previously. Im trying that next.

    Ok for now what worked for me was to take the right round plastic wheel cover off like it was shown on the video and bend back a bit the pin to avoid contact, I also made sure that the flat pin to the right that is touching the metal inside shown on the right on min 6:10 (you can see the pin when the black cover is removed right above the screw hole, notice it on min 4:35 to the top right small flat pin.) is firmly touching the angled metal plate (I bended it a bit). That did the trick for mine. Mine is a HL-3170CDW.

    I don't get the Logic: TONER is 100% NON-CONDUCTIVE*
    So if that roller gets dirty with toner 02:05 it will only decrease the resistance acting the same as removing that small black conductive wheel.
    p.s. Right and Left contact are the same (as they connect/disconnect here 01:50 )
    *The drum uses electrostatic attraction to pick up the toner, conductive particles would dissipate the charge.

    • @GarretKrampe
      @GarretKrampe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    After doing this my printer still reported a warning regarding end of life.
    Fix for me was putting a 22pf ceramic cap between the pads that connect to the rollers AFTER doing the above. With the pads facing you, from left to right 1,2,3, connect the cap between 2 and 3. I just pushed the cap under the pads against the green plastic for testing, and it's been a few days and it hasn't complained yet. I suspect it's not resistance that some printers measure but capacitance.
    For reference, my printer is a HL-3170CDW with Main firmware version 1.3, and Sub1 firmware 1.07. :) I'll post an update if my printer decides it's near end of life. :) My Cartridge is approx 3 years old now and has no coating left on the roller.

    • @GarretKrampe

    • @atunguyd

      HI Keiran - my printer (exact same model with same firmware) has also been giving me issues with "WT Box End Soon" error for a few months (despite only have a page count of 5000).Last week if halts and refused to print telling me to replace the WT Box. By putting a piece of sticky tape over the contact in the middle I managed to reset it but after about 50 prints I am getting the same warning again. I too have been suspecting capacitance (that large roller represents a nice capacitor and a varying thickness of toner dielectric makes for a nice way to vary said capacitance). When mine gives the hard error again I will try your trick. It would be good if some could post what a capacitance meter says on a new (or working) waste box vs one that is starting to give the error or warning.

    • @DarkAlaranth
      @DarkAlaranth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@atunguyd I actually got a new one and measured 0.02 on my auto-ranging multi-meter. Not being sure if it was reading correctly (It's a bit suspect) I disconnected the roller as in this video (the conductive black wheel) and then put several caps I bought between the tabs until I found one (the 22pF one) that measured the same as the new one. Currently my printer has been fine with the old cartridge for a week or so now. :) Going to pull the cartridge out and solder the cap onto the metal strips inside this weekend. Not too confident it will stay where it is long term otherwise as there's a bit of vibration in these things. :)

    • @atunguyd
      @atunguyd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarkAlaranth Aaah great - next time mine complains I will try the capacitor trick - looking on the reviews for this waste toner box on amazon I see a lot of people who are complaining that a new one did not even fix the error so if I can "hotwire" the printer with a cap I will go that route. With regard to soldering you may need a fair amount of solder flux to get your solder to wet on those tabs. You might need a fair amount of heat so it will be worthwhile removing the metal tabs to solder them.

    • @atunguyd
      @atunguyd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarkAlaranth hows the printer going? Mine started to complain abut WT box end soon, I tried a 22pf cap but no luck still same error. Also not possible to solder onto those tabs, I had my solder station at 450 degrees C and plenty flux but solder will not stick.

I've also cleaned that black roll will alcohol. I've went to the printer's setting and done a reset on "reset printer" and "Intial setup". Yet the maintenance message persists and the printer refuses to print. My printer is DCP-9015CDWE, I run it on Win 7, and the version is "Ver.1.01 fi-FI". Hmm, I've removed the roller and sadly it's still showing as Waste Toner Box full. One TH-camr said it may be due to the second rate connectors (thin flimsy components). I've tweaked them so they connect better however problem is still there. So far I've emptied the WT Box, reset and tweaked the connector on the "OMG I'm full" switch and removed the small roller. Any more ideas. I'm not replacing the WT Box because they get enough of my money and it seems the same thing happens with new ones anyway.

    I don't know how to use a multimeter (nor do I have one). Is that absolutely necessary? Call me blind, but I am not seeing any difference on the side once the black cover is removed. All the pieces look like they are in the same exact place on both the old and the new. Once some roller is removed and the box is returned to the printer, will it register when it gets full again or will it no longer register & there'll be an over flow of toner inside ruining the rest of the machine? Sorry to be so dense.
