These are two of Grieg's 12 Melodies, Op.33, arranged by the composer for string orchestra. They were originally settings of poetry for song and piano, and the strophic song structure is very clear throughout the pieces.
They're a beautiful example of Grieg's appealing lyricism and melodic charm. - เพลง
The lyrics of the original songs are also great. They were poetry by Griegs contemporary Åsmund Olavsson Vinje. The lyrics in these two songs are about the shortness of life. Te first one "Hjertesår" is about all tribulations which the human soul must experience during lifetime. The second is about Spring, but the context tells us that a person is convinced to enjoy the spring time for the last time in his life. This poetry is written in the language "landsmål", a version of the Norwegian language which at the time was newly created based on traditional Norwegian dialects. For all people who can read Norwegian or related Scandinavian languages I can warmly recommend the two poems "Hjertesår" and "Våren" by Vinje.
Ces mélodies touchent l'âme au plus profond. Je les écoute depuis plus de soixante ans et toujours avec la même émotion. Aujourd'hui, à 80 ans je me retrouve dans le même état que lorsqu'à vingt ans je faisais la connaissance de Grieg.
We just played this along with some other songs at the hamel madison music center and it sounded so beautiful. Great day!!!
I love this song. It made me cry the first time i heard it. It's So strong and so sad, but I think there is also hope in it... Love it forever
We were taught to sing ‘The Last Spring’ in primary school ( in English, in the UK) , so I would have been about 8 yrs old. I have never forgotten it. Such a beautiful melody & words. ❤
