Marathon Kit List: Essentials For A Sub-

  • Run Tester Nick recently ran a 2:29 marathon and he hasn’t shut up about it since, so we thought it would be best to turn on the camera for a video on all the kit and nutrition products he used for the race.
    We’re lucky enough to get access to a huge variety of running gear and nutritional products to test out for reviews, but it's only our absolute favourite stuff that gets used when it comes to a big target marathon. In this video Nick goes through all the clothes, accessories, nutrition and shoes he used for his sub 2:30.
    At this point it’s definitely worth throwing in a disclaimer that Nick takes a fairly maverick approach to a few aspects of his marathon racing, including three pairs of shorts and an Alan Partridge audiobook, so while we hope there are some useful pointers in here to take away, some of it is not going to suit everyone.

    That's fantastic nick, well done. I know there is no magic (apart from marmite and Borg pants) however a similar video talking about how you trained for it with a kid would be super! Cheers and well done again

      Thanks very much! I'm pretty lucky with my work being flexible to accommodate training, but generally the key thing for me was getting a coach! Massive help in sorting training around the kid :)

    Congrats on the sub 2.30 marathon Nick, that's a phenomenal achievement! Bought a flipbelt last week with the contoured bottles last week, gonna test it out on a long trail run tomorrow.. the soft bottles are a great idea though, particularly for weight so might look into that too.

      Thanks! And very interested to hear how you get on with the contoured bottles, I've never actually tried them. The soft ones are good for weight and packing down but probably slightly harder to get in and out would be my guess, and bulge a little!

      @@TheRunTesters Did a good 2 and half hour session and used the larger of the 2 Flipbelt contoured bottles, it was noticeable weight wise initially but I forgot it was there 5 mins in. Perfect for mountain/trail runs but I imagine it'd be awkward to pull out and put back in during a road marathon without stopping. There is a smaller bottle that prob works better for that type of run.
      On a side note I used the Inov8 Trailfly Ultra G 300 that Kieran reviewed a few weeks back, second decent session in them and they are incredible, my route takes in all terrains from road, grass, mud, gravel to technical rocky parts and my feet have never been more comfortable on a trial run.

      This is great thanks for the info! Might try the smaller one. And glad you like the inov8s. I’m testing them too and they’re prob a little too much for my trail running haha, i dont really go beyond around 90mins in a forest!

    Hey Nick, Congrats, great marathon performance! and thank you so much for sharing all those essentials for marathon race. I'm just planning my first one, so really useful for me :) But before the race, probably in Autumn, I'd like to test myself and try 42K distance something like my time trial :) For me, time below 3:30:00 would be great for the first time. :) All the best!

      @@TheRunTesters Thanks, and btw, I also like flipbelt, the best to carry bigger phone, keys etc. But that's interesting idea to put soft flask to the belt, need to try, seems to be very useful option how to carry drink with myself. :) Best.

      Hi Nick, as you know I'm preparing for Sunday half and need to carry some drink with me and thinking what would be the best way to do it. I've got Flipbelt for some years using it on my every single run so thinking to carry drink in this belt instead of Salmon hydration backpack, do not need for half as much as for full marathon. But due to Covid and hygienic restrictions there will be only plain water in the refreshment stations so want to carry hypotonic or electrolyte drink with myself, just about 250ml. Maybe as you Soft flask can be good solution, but I've read that there's unpleasant odor from the plastic material of that Kalenji soft flasks, is it really true that's very hard to get rid of that smell of the plastic? Thanks

    Congratulations Nick! That is a serious time!
    Really enjoyed this video and I think a lot of people will find it useful with races starting back up.
    Am I right in thinking you had a coach for this training block? If so, I’d love a video about how you found being coached and if you think it’s something that people who are serious about their goals (like yourself) should consider a coach. As someone who doesn’t belong to a club nearly all of my running advice comes from TH-cam / Strava and social media which is often not specific enough.

      Thanks! Yep I have a coach, all done via Whatsapp/calls, and it's been absolutely key to my progress in recent years. My mara PB was 2:53 when I started with him (my coach is Andy Hobdell). I think it's a way better and more effective investment than a pair of carbon shoes or anything else tbh, even if you only use them for one training cycle or when setting up a plan. I've been with Andy for years now though haha, makes training more fun and more effective, especially when planning around a kid!

      Great! Honestly unless you’re getting injured I wouldn’t worry about foot strike tbh! Science in the area very inconclusive. Better training makes you quicker, changing form is more a cherry on top at the end. Watch Brigid Kosgei heel strike her way to the marathon world record and it’ll make you feel better :)

    Terrific video! You mentioned in detail how you take in carbs using Maurten 360 during the race and advised us not to forget about also drinking water. If I'm supposed to drink about 400ml/hour of fluids during the race, should I still try to drink that much if I'm also drinking Maurten 360 or drink less since the Maurten obviously has some water in it? Thanks.

    I have a question regarding the belt, you say here that you used the flip Belt and in the video comparing belt I mention that the Decathlon one (Kiprun) is your go-to. Could you tell us the differences please ? If I would want to focus on carrying flasks only, no gels, which one would you recommend? Thanks a lot !

    What specifically are you cutting out to avoid fibre in the days before the race? Would be great to see a "what do I eat 3 days before a marathon" video! Do you not think that carrying the extra 500g+ in weight is a big sacrifice vs taking the on-track fuels? Is the Oura worth it vs a cheap smart wrist band?

    Have you ever experimented using tailwind at all? I'm really eager to try Maurten but just looking at nutrition options to try before my Autumn marathons

      Yep Tailwind’s stuff is good for sure. I’m all in on Maurten for marathons but have enjoyed using Tailwind in training and there are more flavours!

    Congrats on the time, an interesting insight. As someone who has worked in the sleep aspect of healthcare you cannot underestimate how important it is. But what other stuff do you guys away from running in training? Strength training, yoga, foam roller, cross training etc...?

      Thanks! I (Nick) do yoga three times a week (just Ekhart yoga for runners on TH-cam, great class), plus couple of mini strength sessions. I should do more strength and cross training, but that's what I lost when kid came around!

      Have you guys ever used any Ashmei kit? It’s in Soar kind of territory and have moved more to cycling since I bought in 2015, but I used their tops and socks and they’re pretty awesome.

    Amazing time Nick. Did you put a full sachet of Maurten in those 250ml bottles or split it half and half between two bottles?

      Thanks! It was split between the bottles. I mix up a 500ml bottle and then squirt it in them

      Yep I mix another 500ml in morning and put half in the third bottle. Then sip on the 250ml left at breakfast haha. Thanks!

    "Between these three soft flasks, I have another 120g of carbs".
    750ml of volume for 120g of carbs sounds quite wasteful. Carrying a lot of water there.
    For example, you can fit 150g of sugar dissolved into 75ml of water into a single 150ml soft flask.
    That gives you more carbs at 20% of the volume with the same content as the Maurten drink mix (containing glucose + fructose = sugar).
    It's also almost free compared to buying drink mixes.
    The above assumes that you get water from the aid stations and only want to carry actual carbs on you during the race.

    Which stance socks were they? On stance site I looked under men’s/performance/run but they don’t seem to be listed as running socks. Do you use there specific running socks or just regular ones? Thanks and amazing achievement
