Never try to plug the side of a cable into anything. You need to use the end.
Yeah - it was easier to do it in the thin ethernet times :) - you could just tap the coax and put the connector into the oscilloscope - 10Base2 freq is the same but at that time 100MHz oscilloscopes (even analog ones) were harder to obtain :)
No issues with grounding the ethernet cable through the scope?,
