    If you want to learn more about how Inkscape works, I have a 50+ part video series where I explain all of the tools and features in Inkscape and demonstrate how they work. Here's the link if interested: logosbynick.com/inkscape/

      Hi Nick! Love these videos on Inkscape! I wish I had found them 2 years ago. I might be further along by now! Do you have any videos on how to use Inkscape to convert hand drawn images into vectors using Inkscape? I'd really like to be able to do that but it seems so difficult!

    I just wanted to say that I learn quite a few new things every time I watch a video from you about Inkscape. You seem to talk clearly enough that the auto-generated subtitles are mostly sane enough to follow. (I'm deaf)

      Well that's good news. I didn't even know that there was an automated subtitles feature. Glad it's working out!

    really nice tutorials, but i did find it quite difficult to follow along with the current version of inkscape, trying to find how to enable snapping where for you it was on from the get go, object menu being a drop down and not a seperate row, buncha small differences which added up, eventually got through it, but would love to see an updated tutorial!

    For anyone at the last step on 21:25 getting a wonky coin instead of a nice cut:
    Select the circle, goto Object > Flip Vertically (V) to flip the circle, then deselect, select the red diamond, select the circle, then goto Path > Cut path (P)
    hope this helps : )

    Thanks so much for your videos! I've been stumbling around Inkscape for years and you answered about 10 unanswered how-to's just in one video. I have just started using it to make custom labels and was thrilled to find out about the clone command! I will have to look into your library and see if you have any videos on labels and/or cloning. hey. you always go custom and the zoom 1:1. but when i do this it fits the page to the screen . where as yours look like you are zoomed in the page without page boarders, mine shows the full page with its boarders. so how do i change this to get the same view as you?

    • @cafce25
      @cafce25 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How far it appears to zoom in depends on both your display and the size of the document in inkscape. If you're using a high dpi monitor the same size document will appear smaller. You could either simply zoom in some more or increase your documents size under "File" -> "Document Properties" (Shift + Ctrl + D) where you can adjust Height and Width. In here you can as well resize the page to its content which i find quite useful.

    Intersection deletes the lines entirely at 12:32. Why?
    EDIT: Okay, so I was able to create a second smaller square, line it up properly, and group it with the first one. It was the only way I could get the look right.

    I’ve seen a lot of comments about this, so I’m just gonna share my solution: at the very last step, it cut awkwardly the circle when I follow the instructions. So instead of “path->cut path” I did “object->cut->define” and the circle turned out perfectly. I hope this helps anybody.
    (I translated the options “object->cut->define” from French, but it should be something along those lines if you have English set as your language)

      hAVING THE SAME ISSUE, DID YOU MANAGE TO FIX IT?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You missed a previous step at 11:48 after drawing the line and changing the width you need to convert it to a path "have line selected - Path > Stroke to path", now inkscape will treat that line like a path object. (I know this comment is 1 year old, but an explanation might save someone the headache of figuring it out)

  • @kenziegigantic
    @kenziegigantic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m sure I won’t get a response because this video is two years old, but for some reason, when I am layering the pencils (around 6:25), everything gets messed up. I follow the instructions - path > break apart, path > union, hold shift > click on the one behind, path > difference. And then the pencil on top goes completely white and I can’t select it. It’s just gone. I have no clue what I’m doing wrong, but I think I’ll just start over completely and see if that changes anything.
    Also, a suggestion: maybe slow down a bit in your videos? I had to replay the “path > break apart, path > union, hold shift > click on the one behind, path > difference” part like seven times, pausing after each instruction because you were moving too quickly.

  • @steveryan9269
    @steveryan9269 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmm. 42 seconds in and I have already hit the first thing I can't do. "Custom" does not exist in the view menu of Inkscape 1.2. Found "align and distribute", but it's on the right side now. It would also be nice to point out for beginners that pixels are not the default. I was in mm, and the sizes seemed wrong until I switched it. Terms like "Up here" aren't useful when the mouse moves too quickly. How about "to the top of the left toolbar" or something descriptive? Okay. I give up "where it says snap tocustomodes" leaves me clueless. I tried to go to other sources to see what the icon looks like, but they have whole sets of icons I don't have. I found the Advanced snapping mode option, but there's nothing that seems right.
    Time for a new version? This seems like it could be a great intro if it matched the current interface.

    The current available version of Inkscape behaves way differently than in your tutorials. I have no 'Affect' option, and my lines don't join properly, so my pencil looks weird, with some lines longer than others, despite using the snap to corner function. This is the second tutorial of yours that I haven't been able to complete because my copy of Inkscape just doesn't do a lot of what is shown here. Might be worth shelling out for Illustrator, after all.

    • @warren9404
      @warren9404 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark, you probably figured it out, but for new readers here... in Inkscape 1.1 the word 'Affect' does not show. the 4 options just show up at the top. Turn off the first one. I tried to paste a pic of it but it would not paste. Also in version 1.1 the snap snaps but doesn't attach the nodes so inserted the new middle node click outside the nodes on the line. this will not attach the line to the pencil but will anchor the horizontal line so that when you press CTRL and drag the middle node up, the line ends stay where they should. 1/29/22

    • @AxelleGuitar
      @AxelleGuitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. It did not work until I did some research and realised the problem was that I was dealing with objects and not paths. When you've created your shape of the pencil made of paths, you need to "group" them from the path menu with union and not the object menu "group". That was my issue, maybe yours is similar. Let me know if that solved your issue.

    If you are having trouble with the CUT PATHS at the end of the video. Creating the lines on the side of the circle there is a hack! Create the red square like in video, position It just the same, select the red square and circle, but INSTEAD select stroke to path, then cut path. This will make all lines disappear, but the small line that you need will just need to be stroke adjusted. Try again on other side 😊

    Hi Nick, i work on a mac, and have been an illustrator user for some time, but after seeing some of your vids i would like to try Inkscape. Ive managed to get it onto my mac (with some difficulty i must say) but im interested in it being dark with your icons. Is this possible? do you know how? Thanks Hay

      Hi Hayley, unfortunately I don't know how to make Inkscape dark on a Mac. I don't have much experience with Macs at all. I would try Googling it or asking around at the Inkscape forum. Sorry I couldn't help further.

    Hey Nick, i love these tutorials. Thank you so much! When I click text>put on path, my text goes inside the diameter instead of outside, and the text is reversed. If I click flip vertically, it goes to the outside, but it is still reversed. Any help?

    Somehow when I cut path everything went a little wonky, I went back and re did it, couldn't figure it out so I just made it work. Thank you for another great video

      I had the same problem. I tried it with just a circle and two diamonds created like those in the video and got the expected results, but every time I tried it in the logo, the pieces didn't resemble a circle.
      I worked around the problem by drawing a rectangle across the circle so that it intersected the parts of the circle I wanted to keep. Then select the rectangle and circle, cut path. Now I have something equivalent to the video, but actually a little easier.

      I was getting an hourglass-like shape after cutting path. So I CTRL+Z, flipped the circle horizontally (which looks like it does nothing but...) right before using cut path and it looked like an actual circle even after cutting.

      just flip the circle it wont show any changes but when you cut path it will be same as video
