A few comments on this. I read your blog and wanted to make a few points. I own all three brands and there's a few things to note about each. 1: The older model NWS combimax pliers had a nail puller notch @ the end of the pliers which was really handy. This has been changed to a diamond pattern which works well but I miss that feature. 2: The Knipex finish of this model (and the blue/red handle which is the version I own) does require maintenance of the finish as it will get surface rust whereas the NWS finish does not rust in my experience even with extreme use. 3: The knipex dipped handle finish here is easy to clean and doesn't hold much dirt as does the blue/red handles they offer. Although the blue/red handle and the NWS handles are both very comfy the NWS composite mixed design grips are HORRIBLE for holding dirt. They look nice initially but they soak up ALLLLLL the dirt and look horrible if that matters do you. 4: This is a personal opinion but if you have a mixed workload it's hard to beat the NWS combimax due to the various features it has--the new ones now have a crimper on the rear of the joint too... very nice. NWS also has real nice pricing for the base model grip which holds dirt less and works just as well. That said you really can't go wrong with the other two brands. I have a 180mm Gedore base dip handle combo plier with the matte gray finish and really like that model too. I have the 200mm Blue/Red handle Knipex and that is my workhorse. I use it as a hammer even and it hasn't loosened up.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, you have a lot of valid points. Haven't used them enough or in corrosive environments to see which finish corrodes faster, but I always oil the tools after I use them. I would agree that the NWS pliers would eventually fill up with dirt. I have been mostly using those for cleaner jobs. You can't really beat the price of the NWS pliers and as you said can't really go wrong with any of these models.
The plastic dipped handles are much better for a side pouch on a tool belt bag. The extra plastic on the other handles will prevent the tool from sliding into the pouch deep enough to keep them from falling out. Its mostly a matter of personal preference, but I think a good quality plastic dip handle is far superior to the formed plastic handle.
Awesome review as always. Knipex is an outstanding company, and surprisingly affordable for the quality. The only NWS pliers I prefer over Knipex are the side cutters. The ones that Irwin re-brands. NWS absolutely nailed the grips. They're so good you almost don't even want to put them down. Keep up the good work sir. 👍
I've been using and abusing Knipex pliers and cutters for years now. Got a set of knipex pliers from my granddad, all steel no plastic or rubber handle, and they still work very well. granted their cutting ability is quite poor now, but thats to be expected after 30 years. My knipex cutters are also a dream to work with and very, very sharp. Same with the circlip pliers, the knipex are simply the best.
Problems you had with slipping on gedore and wobbly rivet are most likely caused by chrome plating, you would have the same situation with other two brands and their chrome plated variants of tools.
it's good to see that your knipex has a tight joint. I've had several that had loose joints. matter of fact I've got a linesman pair that you can actually hear a click when you move it. when I first started buying them this looseness almost made me give up on knipex. I don't know what I will do with the linesman pair.
Yeah that's bad. I would have returned/exchange the Knipex ones with loose joints since I believe this would be a manufacturing defect. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had anything wrong with any Knipex product I have bought and probably have a dozen or so pliers from them.
From this video, I can say with no doubt that your NWS pliers were overtightened. I'm using 2 NWS pliers since some years. They were perfect out of the box and they are perfect now, after a lot of abuse. About the cutting performance test, I can add that I have used my pliers to cut a hardened nail with no clear damage. I can even cut thin paper with them. Not a NWS fan, but I think that NWS beats Knipex hands down, but the variety of tools and the quality control is not as good as Knipex. For the BEST combination pliers, I would choose NWS, just my 2c.
I've noticed on a several of my Knipex pliers The joint has rust in there once you start using it the rust uses out and keeps oozing out for some time.. makes me have to have an extra paper towel in my pocket to wipe it down so it doesn't get on anything it's not supposed to. Like light-colored carpets
This is the best review I have seen, thanks a lot for sharing!! :-) About the NWS gripping a bolt, this is why they have made that extra strong grip on the other side, so that you get no slip.
Really like your reviews. I'm a huge knipex fan. Absolutely love them. I buy all kinds of pliers and cutters. Knipex precision pliers and cutters are amazing also. Very pricey but you get what you pay for most of the time. I really like there multi component grips. There very durable and feel great. You can always tell the attention to engineering and detail in knipex products. Anyone who knows anything about good tools knows knipex
Nice review, not surprised to see knipex come out ahead. I have always preffered the simple dipped grips from knipex. Being from Denmark we se a lot of german tools, so i find your Channel very interresting! Hope to see a vintage Bosch grinder restoration someday 😊
Yes, I do like the dipped handles but for the main reason of being the easiet to clean. I started on a video comparing the different knipex handle types which I will get around to finishing some day. I will look out for a vintage Bosch angle grinder. I don't see too many of those around. Angle grinders always seem to be beat up to the point they are thrown in the garbage.
At the bike workshop where I work we have NWS pliers that have joints similar to those of Knipex and Gedore in your video. Best pliers we have, although we don't have Knipex pliers. Amazing handle comfort. Never had any issues with gripping, the joint is the best of all pliers we have. Cutting performance I never tried on tough stuff since we have special cable cutting pliers that I use for that. (SRAM has by far the best bike cable cutting pliers btw)
I bought a pair of Knipex linesman pliers with the composite handles to replace a pair of Kleins that I [temporarily] misplaced. I really like the Knipex as they seem to fit my hand just a little better than the Klein pliers but it terms of day-to-day use for a non-pro, I don't see that much difference. While I understand you want to review German tools, my initial thought is why does a guy want to hunt down a pair of Knipex instead of stopping at Home Depot for a pair of Kleins? I'm wondering if you might want to consider throwing in a commonly available "American" tool in with your mix.
Yeah there are plenty of good tools still made in the USA. I have some Kleins as well as a ton of vintage Craftsman tools. I think last time I went to home depot I had trouble finding the Kleins because they don't put them in the hand tool isle, but instead in the electrical department! The point of this channel isn't to put down tools from other countries, but instead to fill a void of a perceived lack of review for German-brand tools.
I assume you mean that Knipex are the best. If so, I agree. I respectfully disagree with using Rolex as a "best" standard. Rolex is all marketing and a very average timepiece
I appreciate the pie chart. Also, the "feels good in the hands" reviews by tool shills is negated apparently quantified properly by this method, so long as the grip performance is objectively 20%. Uh... reading back that last sentence seems overly pedantic, but just saying.... grip performance is important, but so many other reviews seem to bias that topic way too much. Sadly the only way to properly test cut performance is to work the tool to it's failure point, and that would be a pity.
Yeah a lot of it is going to be subjective and some people may arrive at different conclusions. I definitely like to buy all my tools because then I don't feel obligated to give a positive review and to make sure the company doesn't send a "tuned" unit that does not reflect what a normal consumer would be getting. This is why you don't see many very expensive tools on this channel because I'm cheap. I didn't really take it to failure, but I think I would need a hydraulic press or a vise to get any more force out of the pliers! Not a bad idea for a future video, eventually I think the handles would snap before anything else.
I bougt a small nws 3peice set, fairly decent except for the side cutters wouldn't cut much more than zip ties. And I noticed as you did they were all very stiff.
I have both Knipex and NWS set of electrician VDE pliers and, although I've always been a Knipex fan, I must say that NWS are better quality IMHO. The grips are excellent, the overall finish is better, the aesthetics is nicer. Who ever choses NWS over Knipex will not regret.

If you are general handy man vampliers have more eclectic use. These knipex are great for electricians but not practical for the money and take up space in my bag.
Vampliers are geared for screw removal first and then as general pliers second. They are Japanese made so maybe quality wise they’d be close but overall they are not in the same stratosphere as knipex.
Knipex is the best. Here in the EU its a very common brand, its just hands down the go-to brand if you want a decent set of pliers. You can never go wrong with Knipex.
I personally would not buy another NWS plier. I have a needle nose plier, first use, the teeth is worn and nose is bent. Broke out my Knipex, not a single dent.
My first and likely last ever experience with NWS was with their long nose radio pliers(what most people erroneously call needle nose). Nice handles, loved the mat chrome finish, but the tool itself was junk. Way to much flex to the jaws, and the tips bent out, and one actually broke.
It is hard to go wrong with Knipex. I assume when you say 4" you are talking about overall length? That would be a pretty small needle nose pliers at 4 inches. The smallest that Knipex makes for needle nose is 125mm in length (5 inches) with part number 25 01 125 (snipe nose radio pliers). If you want one without cutters look at part number 37 21 125 (precision mechanics gripping pliers).
Lol, you can't knock the Knipex for having "inferior" handles when you ORDERED them that way! Those are the most basic, entry level handles Knipex offers.
You did a very through eval. Could it have been more tech sure but hey its your test and quite through IMO. the biggest issue was picking different models that had different features. Take the Kinpex. You chose thin dipped handles and standard finish but the Gregory had chrome plating and the NWS PTTFE designer comfort handles. So Kinpex was basically using its base level model cutters where the other were the premium model for lack of better terms. I think if you had picked the chrome plated Kinpex with comfort or the isolated dipped which is much thicker you would have seen a difference in the areas the Kinpex rated down. I think its clear to all the Kinpex is just superior brand. I actually only have a few Kinpex so I am no fan boy. But was a licensed commercial mechanical electrician for years. If I was back in the trade professional there is no question without proof otherwise of superiority my default for all cutters would Kinpex. Sad to say USA Kliens is a shadow of its former self in terms of quality for its hand tools. In fact they are only a step above the China knock offs you get at Harbor Freight. Not to mention sadly HF actually has a much better warranty.u Again I think you did a very good job and since you had to pay for the tools yourself its hard to fault the differences in models and you did briefly mention this. Good job

Tom Galanius unless you have a tool box where comfort is more important than space taken up
Agreed
Knipex wins even with the basic grips......................says it all , best brand for cutters (& pliers)

Yeah I agree with everything you said. I do have some knipex side cutters, might be another good comparison in the future.
No surprise for me that Knipex won the competion. I work with knipex pliers for over 45 years now and they are the best plier
s you can buy for money.
My NSW pliers are holding up well and love those comfy grips.
You should've had Knipex 2-component handled linesman pliers to be fair on the comfort bit and all that. :)
I have those two-component VDE handled lineman pliers, but I haven't really got around to using them yet.
Knipex is by far the best and it doesnt matter what style of grip you choose.
@@GermanToolReviews I find the Knipex red/blue component grips most attractive.

I wonder how vampliers/ engineer pliers would fare in this test! would be interesting to revisit some test in a short compilation of videos

I think the only reason the gestore had slippery cutting surfaces is because the chrome plating is so much harder and more slippery

Knipex are the Rolex of pliers
Yes, and luckily they are not priced like a Rolex!
I assume you mean that Knipex are the best. If so, I agree. I respectfully disagree with using Rolex as a "best" standard. Rolex is all marketing and a very average timepiece
Dont get grease on that NWS butylene over mold, it will not hold up well. Also stinks to high hell when it starts to break down.
I appreciate the pie chart. Also, the "feels good in the hands" reviews by tool shills is negated apparently quantified properly by this method, so long as the grip performance is objectively 20%. Gedore now makes angled version of pliers now, saw them in new catalogue. Comparison of them with nws and orbis (angled head)would be appreciated! Possibly nose pliers
Thanks! yeah I don't have any angled combination pliers yet, hopefully I can pick some up sometime.
It seems like any combo pliers would cut any copper wires with no problem. But only some would do that with a piano wire used in springs.
I just stumbled upon your channel. love it! Great review! Just subbed! Thanks!
Hi! What do you think of matador pliers made in Germany? Thank you for your videos :-)
For cutting copper wire the NWS would be fine, but their edge durability is crap so I would advise against much else. I have the NWS Fantasticos and the edge retention is just awful, granted I do cut heavier gauge wire with them. The only NWS tool I think I would really recommend is the pistol grip combination pliers. For everything else, Knipex all the way.
Oh, and the NWS warranty is good for nothing. It's supposedly 5 years but I never could get them to warranty my pliers after maybe 1-2 years. Knipex on the other hand I believe is lifetime warranty.

Maybe it's just where I live but I spoke to the regional Knipex manager and he said he'd replace anything unless there were signs of abuse.
Ever try VAMpliers?
i use nws now cheaper and better than knipex in my line of work, the spring clip is a must for cable ties etc..so fast!

What oil should you oil these things with? I oil my bahco saw with engine oil when I store it away.
I use Ballistol, but any protecting oil will do, like 3-in-1.
Cheers mate
interesting, i am from germany and i have never seen the brand nws anywhere.
Good review thanks bud
Bought a plier through the link thx
Пробовал в работе ВСЕ из теста! На мой взгляд NWS лучшие! Всем удачи!
will you ever review the NWS side cutters and needle nose pliers?
Yeah maybe someday if I do another pliers showdown.
Good review
I have some klein pliers that are about 50 years old that would have cut that welding cable no problem.
Are Vampliers any rival to knipex
Vampliers are geared for screw removal first and then as general pliers second.
They are Japanese made so maybe quality wise they’d be close but overall they are not in the same stratosphere as knipex.

Knipex is the best. Here in the EU its a very common brand, its just hands down the go-to brand if you want a decent set of pliers. You can never go wrong with Knipex.
pleace make video Germany Knipex vs Vampir Japan ?

I personally would not buy another NWS plier. I have a needle nose plier, first use, the teeth is worn and nose is bent. Broke out my Knipex, not a single dent.
Maybe I will do a follow up after using them for a year or so. Or I could take them to work where the assemblers use tools all day for cutting wire.
My first and likely last ever experience with NWS was with their long nose radio pliers(what most people erroneously call needle nose).
Nice handles, loved the mat chrome finish, but the tool itself was junk.
Way to much flex to the jaws, and the tips bent out, and one actually broke.
I use knipex and love them, however they are not invincible. Doesn't take long to fuck up the teeth in any plier.
Glad I found your channel! I really prefer german tools (Maybe ´cause I am german:-))... Subbed. Of course!
Thanks! Subbed to yours as well. Is your Drill press German-made?
Thank you! Yes it is! It's a very old and heavy BÖHRER drill press.

Ace Ventura is your mail man haha
Could anyone give me some recommendations for some quality needle nose pliers? Looking for about a 4" length.
Try the 08 22 145 needle-nose combi. pliers :]

Tethering is available on Knipex tools :www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=groups&parentID=1298&groupID=2362
Yes, you are correct, but only on the multi-component grips and only for certain models that end with a T in the part number.
I know, and it'S frustrating as hell as I have to decide whether to switch or keep the non-tethered versions.
I always figured the tethered versions were for people who work up high, like on cell phone towers, sides of buildings, silos, roofs, etc.
Lots of sex noises trying to chop that wires
why the electric guitar intro.. it doesn't fit with the rest of your content.
What music would fit the content?
He prefers Wagner :]

The K I knipex is silent, just say nipex!!!
Lol, you can't knock the Knipex for having "inferior" handles when you ORDERED them that way! Those are the most basic, entry level handles Knipex offers.
where is wiha???
Wiha's combination pliers are made in Vietnam.
“Has an inferior handle design” you picked the bone comfort grip that’s your fault lool
Will Camden you didn’t watch the whole video did you? He used another pair of knipex pliers with the two component handles to feel the difference
Not to mention sadly HF actually has a much better warranty.u
Again I think you did a very good job and since you had to pay for the tools yourself its hard to fault the differences in models and you did briefly mention this. Good job
I dig the vid, but I doubt you say My ka-nee hurts...just My knee hurts.
It's German dude, not English
just get some channellocks and be done with it.
