    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s easy to paint these sports with the same brush when there are a few outliers who showcase the sport at its most extreme end. I guess more people than ever have seen Climbing from watching films like “Free Solo” which definitely show an extreme end of the scale, but I hope that with Climbing walls and the introduction of climbing to mainstream media that hopefully more non climbers understand climbing as a sport like any other that you can take part in and enjoy with relative safety :)

    started bouldering about a year ago. started top rope just recently in april. My next goal is to start lead in the next year and hopefully soon start getting out of the climbing gym. Free climbing El Cap seems to be the ultimate goal. I have never feelt the same motivation. tho in my case, I need to learn to fall, trust the rope and my parter before doesing anything like that. I still have problems letting go from 15-17 meter on an autobelay. (but no problems when it's a person holding the rope). still havn't done any lead climbing which feels like it would be a lot scarier when falling.

    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know what you mean with the autobelay. I also find it nerve wracking when there’s nobody else on the end of the rope haha
      With lead climbing it’s just familiarising yourself with the setup and getting used to taking falls whilst climbing above bolts/gear. It is scarier than top rope, but over time you can get used to it.
      Remember that climbing is all about assessing risks. The more you climb and put yourself in new situations, the better you will get at assessing those risks and making better judgements which will in turn keep you safe.
      Ironically, I find bouldering the most dangerous of all these disciplines haha you always hit the ground 🤦‍♂️ 😅👍

    What rope work would I need to know and how would I tailor outdoor and indoor climbing to prepare for El Capitan?

    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man, so regarding ropework, that’s a pretty big question - but I’d say the most important parts are “Building anchors”, “Hauling”, “Rescue” and “Abseil” rope skills.
      Regarding tailoring training, another big question and one I’d like to do a video on, but in short... if your outdoors go climb lots of granite. If you don’t have granite then sandstone, slate or dolerite is also good rock types that tend to mimic some of the styles. Lots of slabs, corners and cracks!
      If you’re indoors then focus on mileage - long sessions on lots of easy to mid grade bouldering and route sessions.
      Again, a big question, but stay tuned, I’ll be doing a follow up video to answer these soon :)

    If you need to explain the difference between aid and free climbing, then your audience is probably nowhere near ready to climb el Cap. New to this channel, so I'm not sure who the target audience is. Would love to see a video like this geared to climbers with a few seasons under their belt.
    Questions I have are a little more logistical and focused around trip planning like where to camp before going up the nose? how to know when other parties are going to be making ascents so you can plan around them? Dealing with other parties on the wall and respecting cultural norms? Permits? Best place for a beer after?

    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Thomas,
      Yeah so in the first min or so of the video I said it’s aimed more towards people who don’t know much about what Climbing Big Walls/ElCap is all about. I think it’s useful for people who perhaps watched FreeSolo or DawnWall or knew people who went big walling, but perhaps didn’t know much about what it actually entailed.
      I’m keen to do more detailed big wall videos for sure! Definitely a Yosemite specific video down the line :) We had planned on being there the last 2 months but unfortunately due to COVID-19 we had to bail :(
      Thanks for the feedback and stay tuned for some more videos shortly :)

    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, I would say honestly that the best big wall prep in the U.K. I had was climbing Twll Mawr on the Welsh slate. It’s a mini big wall, feels a little like being on a wall with the flatness and exposure that wall provides. Also the Climbing is very granite-esque. If you climb in the 5.13/7c+ range then doing something like “Quarryman” from the ground is a good challenge. There are also other climbs in that quarry that are excellent and provide similar experiences.

      I think when your talking about Big Walls though I think most only consider the main routes on the steep faces that generally take multiple days. So in that case “Freerider” is the easiest of the “Big Walls” however you define that :)

    How's the leap from 6-10 pitch alpine to big wall? Done the south face of Aiguille du Midi, but psychologically & equipment / hauling 900m and 300m seems so different.

    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, great question. A lot of the techniques will be the same, but you’ll just have more gear and be expecting to sleep on the wall (alpine your usually moving faster). Psychologically big walling can be easier in the short term as you can sleep most places with a portaledge, but eventually the relentless climbing day on day out gets harder on the body and mind and as food and water supplies dwindle, you’ll have added pressure - with alpine the pressure is short term as you just have to make sure you move fast enough that day to get up and down. Regarding exposure, a 900m big wall will have more, but if you can climb the aguille di midi then I doubt it will have too much impact on you. And equipment, it’s just some extra stuff like portaledge, poop tube, bigger haul bags, and some slightly more complex systems to haul and keep the bags safe, tied up and lowering them out at each pitch. I wouldn’t say it’s a huge leap for capable alpine climbers to make, but it will require some extra skills/gear and a slightly different approach :)

    • @StaggerLee68
      @StaggerLee68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just go and get on it. As an alpine climber you'll do just fine. Make sure you have a great partner who can keep it fun when it gets weird. I know the Big Stone well and the single best piece of beta I've ever got a very long time ago is to have a plan with your partner on how you would rescue one another from anywhere at any time. Can you down aid hard overhanging aid pitches and bring your partner down as well? You might want to think about it. How's you're high angle medical skills? I suspect as an alpine climber you've got a better grasp on this stuff as most, that's good. To rely on YOSAR to bail you out of there is a convenient plan, but horrible style. Most people never even think this through and rely on the single best high angle rescuers that are always there and certainly have your back. That said, If your partner cannot get you down or up, or kills you both in that process..you're better off rope soloing. In the end, if you want to go up there, pick out a route and a GOOD partner then, go man go! You gotta show to know and you can't fail until you quit trying. There is nothing like topping out on your first El Cap route. Beer tastes even better up there, don't forget beer or you will die for sure. PEEECE!

      @@RobbiePhillips Thanks Robbie, it's all a bit academic as I've age out a bit. But really wish I had done the sword on squamish when I could climb. Exasperator on the apron was my second trad lead, which is crazy in hindsight(!).
      But alpine "capable" is debatable - both my hardest leads are likely alpine at 3800m by virtue of being off route !
      One deliberate - fed up on the Eperon de Cosmique waiting in queues behind guided parties on the Rebuffat Pierre, I just went for the roof of C'est pas Physique c'est electrique, over the Cosmique hut power cables. Found out later I'd pulled a 6c one move wonder.
      A year later did the Rebuffat on Aiguille du Midi, aiming for the Cretton finish, but got off route after all the difficulties were over and did the run out 6a final pitch of Midi Sonne instead. So had fun, but some incompetence in route finding was present(!).

    • @RobbiePhillips
      @RobbiePhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Julien, the easiest Big Wall free climb on El Cap is “Freerider” 5.13 (7c+). It’s been climbed by many non-pros, but without a doubt it still requires a lot of dedication to climbing to get to that skill level. There is an easier smaller free route on the side of El Cap called the “West Face” which isn’t considered a Big Wall climb like the others, but gets many ascents and is by all means still a big day out. It goes at about 5.11c/d which I think is 6c+/7a - but again, it’s trad and not sporty in style.

      In Yosemite it depends when your there, what time in the day and the weather. Of course it can get cold up there, especially the higher you get the thermal winds get worse and it definitely keeps you cool in the sun. In the evenings it can get cold, but in the Fall (Autumn) time I haven’t found it too chilly. A down jacket and synthetic is definitely recommended for when your at the bivy. I always climb with a light wind proof jacket attached to my harness for when I get to belays and that is usually enough to keep me warm until the second arrives.

      Yep! El Cap has less falling rock because the granite is glacier polished - most of the really loose rock has already been taken off. The other side of the valley on upper and lower cathedral is a lot looser :)

      Haha! Yeah so have I :P the accent can really fluctuate depending on where you're from. Probably the trickiest accents are Glasgow and Doric from Aberdeenshire. I'm from edinburgh, but have a more subtle lilt to the accent which is more well pronounced. In fact I heard that the accent most common in the Scottish Highlands is considered the easiest to understand English speaking accent in the world (easier than the Queen's English). They say it's because of the sing-songy style of speaking. @@samik83

    “Still a pretty difficult thing to do” ThAts a horrible way to describe what Alex did.. smh after editing everything that’s the way u explain it lol smh the video has good Info in it but your very lackluster in your description of honnolds free solo adventure

      Hey dude, you’ve misunderstood what I said. I didn’t say that about Honnold, I said that about climbing “Freerider” free, not free solo. Climbing “Freerider” free is indeed a difficult thing to do, as I said. Climbing it free-solo is remarkable!
