  • LIVE TRIAL: SC v. Nathaniel Rowland Trial - Alleged Murder Of Samantha Josephson
    Prosecution Witnesses:
Direct Exam of Lt. Todd Schenk - Crime Scene Investigator
Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina. You can watch in the player above.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

@Charlotte: I think of her boyfriend. He must suffer massive guilt, that he didn't call the police in her town immediately, when she didn't arrive at her home. He and her friends "assumed facts not in evidence," so to speak, that she got home okay, it was just her cell phone left behind. He must be beating himself up that he didn't call the police to do a welfare check, to make sure she got home. They get there, she's OK, no harm, no foul. But he didn't.

You don't want to call her by name until you get to the point in the investigation that the victim has been identified. The jury needs to go step by step through the investigation. If the prosecution is calling her "Samantha" from the very beginning it can be seen as creating an emotional bias in the jury. In a case like this where there is no exculpatory evidence or viable alibi, you don't want to give the defense ANYTHING that they can use as an appeal. The jury needs to be where the witness on the stand was. As the case develops, her name will be used more and more.

He was told to cover his nose, he does it in every single part of this coverage. Just to lift his nose back up towards the sky. They even exchanged his initial mak. Perpetrators are ticking exactly like this, stupid mind games that demonstrate that a spoiled brat doesn’t obey to any rules. In the end of this sequence he mysteriously picks up his mask twice. Outlaw drivers being able to recline their seats, beyond where they can’t be plainly seen. Outlaw non factory included, tinted windows. If someone takes off on foot, after being pulled over by police, introduce them to the K-9, if one is handy. It’s simply incredible the risks that officers are required and willing to take.
