    9:47 The three stuntmen were supposed to land on the car behind Chan Ka-Kui (Jackie Chan), which had been specially spring-loaded to help break their fall. Unfortunately a combination of the bus driver braking a bit too harshly through fear of hitting Jackie, coupled with the kind of air-brakes that Hong Kong buses had at the time, caused the three stuntmen to be ejected prematurely, fall short of the car and land on the road. However, to avoid having to potentially risk more injuries, Jackie continued with the shot and stayed in character - *then* the three stuntmen were taken to hospital.

      Because buses are heavy, they have to be equipped with air brakes. You can’t press on the brakes of a bus the same way as a car. Same with a train.

      I can only presume that neither Jackie nor any of the rest of the cast and crew realised how the air-brakes would affect things.

    Back in 2015 I went to the shopping mall where the finale was shot during a brief visit to Hong Kong. It's the Wing-On Plaza (as you may have noticed from some of the exterior shots) and, when you actually visit the mall itself, not only did Jackie manage to shoot the film in such a way that it made the mall look bigger than it really is, but until you have been there you don't really get a true understanding of just how high up he was before he started the famous pole-slide stunt. The distance from that upper escalator balcony to the floor below is much higher up than it looks!

    Jackie Chan's old website (tragically not up anymore) used to have an image of his skeleton, and you could click on any bone and it would show you a clip from one of his movies of him breaking it. He has said that he has broken almost every bone in his body on camera. So many stuntmen got hurt that insurance companies stopped insuring his movie sets.

      As well as burning the skin off his hands doing the pole-slide stunt, he did very nearly suffer a career-ending injury. When he landed on the toy house at the bottom he *nearly* broke the seventh and eighth vertebrae in his spine so he was very nearly paralysed.

    THANK YOU for being one of the few people that watched an actual Jackie film!
    Police Story 2 is just as good (it has a great 10-on-1 playground fight scene, complete with steel poles and a nice full-impact head kick).
    Project A 1 and 2, as well as Drunken Master 1 and 2 (particularly the second one) are must-watches. You'll probably be pioneers in the Reactosphere, as Jackie's HK cinema is criminally underlooked, with everyone and their mother reacting to Rush Hour and nothing else.
    Which is funny, given that those old films put him on the map amongst movie aficianados, but in terms of actually watching stuff, mainstream viewers mainly saw his watered-down Hollywood stuff.
    I completely agree with your views on respecting the material and am so grateful for you guys watching the original sound!

      (a) Chan Ka-Kui being introduced to the women who would later take part in the interrogation scene, rather than them just suddenly appearing out of nowhere.
      (b) When the police are searching for that dodgy guy on the streets they question more people.

Nearly all of Jackie Chans old school 70's and 80's films are so fun to watch and brilliantly done, glad you both enjoyed this one certainly one of his best👌.

    2:14 Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho are very important. Jackie Chan’s movies that are worth watching may not exist if they did what no one else was willing to do. They were willing to listen to Jackie and let Jackie makes the types of films Jackie wanted to make. If you read Jackie Chan’s autobiography, you would learn that Jackie Chan was known as “box office poison.” Directors and producers were forcing Jackie to make movies that didn’t let Jackie highlight his skills. Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho listened to Jackie and gave Jackie Chan freedom to do the stunts, fighting, and style of filmmaking that Jackie envisioned.

Somewhat fun fact: the glass during the mall fight ended up thicker than normal breakaway glass, so a lot of the cuts and injuries you see on the cast are real. For more Jackie films, I highly recommend "Who Am I?" and "Project A." The former showing more of his insane choreography and stunt skills, while the latter is a great showcase of his comedy. (:

    Good on you both for reacting to the original Hong Kong cut. The reason I say that is that there is an English dub that not only changed almost all of the music (only that pumping song _Hero Story_ that plays during the closing credits remains intact in this particular international cut), but also cut out some scenes, in particular:
    (a) the photo shoot for the publicity shots of Chan;
    (b) the bit after the court case in which Chu Tao (the late Chor Yuen, who sadly died in 2022) watches Chan being interviewed on TV (the discussion that he has after this with his henchmen, the bent cop Inspector Man and the corrupt lawyer remained but that TV interview was completely cut, save for the freeze-frame of Chan where Chu taunts him);
    (c) almost the entirety of the scene in which Chan is left to handle multiple telephone calls is gone, with only the discussion between Chan and Snake Eyes (Tai Po) left intact. (Strangely enough the outtakes in which you see him try and catch that airborne pencil and where he juggles three telephone receivers are still present in this particular international cut even though the scene containing them was nowhere to be seen in the actual film itself!).
    The other main changes are to characters' names. For instance, instead of Chan Ka-Kui Jackie's character is given the English name Kevin Chan, while the main villain Chu Tao simply became Ko.

    Beyond Bad Boys 2, other Hollywood movies have also copied scenes from this film. The sequence in which Jackie stops the bus is the same way that Stallone stops a truck in the beginning of Tango & Cash (1989). Brandon Lee's Rapid Fire (1992) also does the bit in which a bad guy is ran through multiple glass walls by a motorcycle.
    Many western moviegoers often assume that expensive stunts mean more danger. But classic Hong Kong action flicks like this demonstrate that cheaper stunts are actually way more likely to result in serious injury due to less time & budget spent on safety precautions. American productions always require insurance, hence policies have to be obeyed. JC & his production team were banned by all insurance companies in HK.

    What makes Jackie Chan's stunt scenes so amazing isn't just that the stunts are real, but the "rhythm" in how they are choregraphed, purposely like a dance -- very little slow motion, very few cuts, almost no zooms, and a pace so frantic that you almost miss half of the moves. Jackie himself talks about rhythm in multiple interviews and how he thinks Hollywood fight scenes lose momentum because they cut too much and can't keep up the energy for the entire scene.

The craziest thing is, Jackie was filming two movies simultaneously, so after doing the pole slide stunt, he went to get a beer with his stunt team and then went right to the set of the other movie! He said his adrenaline was so high he didn't feel the burns until he reached the set.

    Great movie. Jackie has a video called "My Stunts" where he explains a lot of his biggest stunts. Mostly the Police Story movies, Project A, Rumble in the Bronx, Who Am I, and the first Rush Hour. For the bus chase they used a gimmicked umbrella, more like a crowbar, but no safety equipment. He just did those climbs and swings. The run down the mountain was straight up, no gimmick, no equipment. The bus gag had been practiced with a bus with regular brakes, and the guys were supposed to land on the car, but for filming they had a bus with air brakes, which threw off the timing, so they legit hit the asphalt. The pole slide at the end,, you're right, he was hurt. He's been hurt worse, but he still thinks of that as his most painful and most dangerous stunt. I strongly recommend Who Am I. Great movie, and phenomenal stunts.

The second attempt he felt severely injuring his back and hit his head on a rock which drove a piece of bone into his brain and caused him to bleed a lot from his ear. If the medics hadn’t acted as fast as they did he would have died that day.

    In the scene where Jackie Chan slides down the pole he did get injured.
    The lights that was around it heated up the metal pole and he got 2nd degree burns on his hands. He also dislocated pelvis and a back injury. Due to this he want able to act any more acting that day for another film he was in. The amount of injuries he had suffered in movies are crazy. He almost died filming Armor of God.
    His fighting scene are always crazy but funny in a what too because he uses his surroundings and lots of props. As interesting as it may seems it's basically showing you in a fight that anything and everything around you can become a weapon.

    One aspect of Hong Kong fight choreography of this era that is used in _Police Story_ is the occasional use of fake legs to simulate kicks. It might be an arm with a trouser leg and a shoe on the end of it being used to double for a kick, or simply a fake shin and foot on the end of a stick just being pushed into frame and quickly retracted before you realise it's not a real leg.
    One of these fake legs is used when Danny Chu (the late Fung Hak-On) kicks Chan in the stomach at 22:43 (even though it's blurry in this video I can see enough to know that that is the kick I'm talking about here). The other fake legs appear at various points during the mall fight, such as the kick to Chan's head at 26:44 and the one to his face at 27:27. The kind of choreography you're seeing here is actually quite hard to do, and is heavily reliant on timing, coupled with there being a limited amount of time for Jackie to get the shots he wanted, so sometimes it can help save time to just push a fake leg into shot instead of having someone who is going to be off-screen actually throwing a kick with their real leg.
    Fung Hak-On was a common casting choice for villains, not only because of his martial arts skills but also because his imposing look made him very well suited to such roles (a brief role from him in Jackie Chan's 1978 breakout hit _Snake in the Eagle's Shadow_ is one of the few times Westerners had a chance to see him not play a villain!). Sadly at just 67 he died in 2016 after losing a two-year battle with oesophageal cancer. Jackie was particularly saddened by his passing when he announced it on his official Facebook page.

    With the bus stunt, they were supposed to fall on top of the car, breaking the fall. But they hit the tarmac and it was left in, of course. That's eighties HK action movies for you!
    Do The Prodigal Son. my favourite Kung-Fu movie of all time! Please!

      @Texy88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love _The Prodigal Son._ Sammo Hung's direction and action choreography was almost always a joy to watch, and he usually made on-screen fighters look the very best that they were ever going to (one only has to look at how great Jackie Chan's martial artistry really is when Sammo choreographs him!).
      Yuen Biao is actually in _The Prodigal Son_ a lot more than you might think because he did a lot of doubling for other people in this film (he even doubled Sammo a couple of times despite the weight difference between the two).

    FYI, when Jackie jumped onto the Christmas lights, those here live 220 volt lights. Jackie had 2 degree burns on his hands. All those stunts were done with without the benefit of padding. Can't wait till you guys watch Police Story 2. Maggie Chang (Jackie's GF in the series) gets hurt.

    LOOK UP a movie called Jackie Chan: My Stunts. I had it on DVD, and it came out around 99/2000. I'm sure it's on TH-cam by now. He breaks down a lot of his earlier movies, like this one. The umbrella is a steel pipe. As for the guy flying out of the bus, that was totally an accident. They were all supposed to break their fall on the car, which may have been padded, but the bus stopped too short, and threw off their timing so they all got hospitalized, but you can see they kept it in, like most best shot bloopers.

    I grew up watching Jackie Chan films; it’s great to see reactions to his older films.
    I highly recommend The Fearless Hyena since it directly inspired a scene in Kung Fu Panda.
    Wheels on Meals is one of my favorite, along with Armor of the Gods.
    Finally, City Hunter is a ton of fun and has more Street Fighter moves in it than the first Street Fighter movie.
    Edit: It wasn’t just the friction on the poll, it turned out the poll was super hot from all the lights being on right next to it.

    Some versions of this film had either a text epilogue saying that Chan's character was punished for taking the law into his own hands or a continuation of the scene in which you saw Chan's character being arrested. At the time some Asian markets were uncomfortable showing movies in which the supposed hero of the piece was seen to be committing crime and/or going rogue and getting away with it so in those markets there would usually be something showing that the character was either arrested or killed because of that behaviour.

    Lots of respect to you guys for doing it the ONE and ONLY 100% TRUE and PROPER way. That is - original full native version with subs and no censorship/cuts.
    Please, whatever you'll be doing in the future, do Aces Go Places and ESPECIALLY Aces Go Places II the exact same way, whenever you do. It's the ONLY way.
    P.S.
    The "umbrella" was a fully solid cast metal rod, because, naturally, actual run-of-the-mill consumer umbrella wouldn't be able to support adult male's weight.
    The "run down the hill" Fang Shilong does at the beginning, was fully performed on an actual real hill, which had inclination angle of 50 degrees. In one take.
    Fang Shilong actually really *burned* his hands' palms, getting 2-nd degree skin burns (essentially full upper layer of skin peeling off), when he "rode" *that pillar* down, because it turned out that the light bulb "wrapping" that was done around that pillar, heated the whole thing thoroughly, and the crew didn't foresee that.
    It was just one take, because they couldn't replicate that due to injuries, and it took the actor several months of medical treatment to partially recover from that.

    You should definitely follow up with Police Story 2 and 3 (the latter is called Supercop in the States I think, and he teams up with Michelle Yeoh).
    JC probably is the GOAT of goofball stunt movies, unless you consider the OG, Buster Keaton, who wrote the handbook in the silent era. He also directed himself and did all the stunts. Jackie Chan is a big fan. Check out Sherlock Jr for starters - Keaton was some athlete, had impeccable timing and also pioneered some cool trick photography, mostly for lols.

      The recent 2022 Eureka! release of _Police Story III: Supercop_ actually contains the original Hong Kong version, with all of the bits cut from that 1996 _Supercop_ version completely restored and with all of the original music (so no cheesy cover of _Kung-Fu Fighting_ here!). However, that particular 1996 release is still on the disc as an extra.
      _Police Story III: Supercop_ (1992) is actually quite important in Hong Kong movie history: it was the first Hong Kong movie to be shot in sync-sound.

    One of the things I love about Jackie Chan or Jet Li movies is that even though they're badasses, they still get their asses kicked. You watch movies from people like Chuck Norris or Steven Segal and they basically never even get touched, Norris was really bad about this in Texas Ranger, and it's incredibly annoying.

      @Texy88 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that when they included that original international English dub as an extra on the Eureka! Entertainment Blu-Ray (and later 4K Ultra HD) release. I was shocked to find that almost the entirety of the bit where Chan juggles multiple telephones was cut out of that version; only the conversation between him and Tai Po's character Snake Eyes remained.
      They also completely changed all the music except for retaining the _Hero Story_ song in the closing credits.

    The lights for the big jump scene were meant to be plugged into a low-powered car battery, but the crew member in charge decided to be lazy and used a regular wall socket, so you're seeing Jackie get a full jolt all the way down. I imagine there were some choice words for the asshole afterward.

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I initially thought that, but later I heard the audio commentaries on both the Hong Kong Legends DVD release and the later Eureka! Entertainment 4K Ultra HD release. It actually turned out that the car battery was simply not powerful enough to light absolutely all of the lights, so they had no choice but to plug it into a regular plug-socket in the wall. This understandably made the stunt more dangerous for Jackie later on.
