I feel what it comes down to is Garmin's solution is the right one. They just choose to charge excessively for it. I guess because the demand isn't there for spare cables. Everyone is supplied with a charge cable, how many people would need a second one? Not enough to bring down the price.

Standardised charging plug is always welcome, though not so much a big deal for me unless I loose my cable. My only concern is that the micro USB socket really isn't durable, overtime this could render the entire watch useless once it breaks. For the purpose of longevity, I'm happy with Garmin's solution. I don't see their connector socket breaking by design.

true, yes far more durable, but just too expensive, i hope some makes a small adapter plug.

Ye, i think there are copy leads on the market allready... but the fenix 3 type charging is great for the reasons you listed, even on a bike mount. Hopefully some chinese company will make a same thing for 5x, its not impossible... and im with you on the type-C, but definetly not micro USB, bad quality of the ports and the plug and its going ospolete soon

There is no way they could use a more standard connector and still keep the 100 meter waterproof status; or perhaps any waterproof status at all..
A standard connector would require some sort of rubber bung to stop water getting in, and that just wouldn't cut it when it comes to using it under water... it would leak. Good enough to make it "water resistant" or "spashproof" but that's about it.
So they created a connector that needs no cover, can get wet just fine and won't cause any problems.
It's also a configuration that someone, garmin or a third party, could easily create a flatter connector for that would allow you to wear the watch while charging. There just isn't anything out right now.
