I was in a rock band with Olympia Dukakis's son when I was about 21. (1988) She used to make us lunch sometimes when we practiced in their carriage house behind the house. We did a small party for the playhouse she was involved with in Montclair NJ. She kept her Oscar in the kitchen. Nice lady.

My grandparents would get into screaming matches where my grandpa would pretend to leave. He would go over to the coat closet, pull the suitcase down, then put on my nana's fur coat and hat and tell her he was out of there. Nicholas Cage has become such a meme that people tend to forget he actually has a pretty long and legit filmography. Dude's been working since he was really young and he easily has as many world-class performances in pretty much every film genre as he has crazy over the top performances in, again, every film genre. It seems this man basically got into so much financial trouble because of his outlandish lifestyle that he at some point said, "Screw it" and started making any movie just for the paycheck and didn't look back despite having a few Oscar-worthy performances to his name by then.

Casting Notes: The studio had Peter Gallagher in mind for the role of Ronny Cammareri, but Cher adamantly wanted Nicolas Cage to play Ronny, as she thought he could play "crazy" more realistically. She shot a screen test with Gallagher, and also one with Cage. After the tests, the studio still wanted Gallagher in the role. However, Cher fought for Cage, insisting that she wouldn't do the movie without him. The studio relented, and Cage was cast. Gallagher would eventually be cast in a similarly themed film, While You Were Sleeping (1995).

What a lovely movie! I have to say, this reaction video is the best tribute to Olympia Dukakis that probably exists in the world, you really did a great job highlighting her work. P.S. There's another big 80s-Italian-love-story-comedy movie that you'll definitely like: Prizzi's Honor, with Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner. Equally hilarious, Oscar-nominated, etc etc..... Also, since you've seen The Godfather, you will definitely like The Freshman, with Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando (early 90s), that is a classic comedy (but you have to have seen The Godfather to get the central joke of the movie).

As someone who still goes to the Met for the opera, I can confirm the xylophones are a thing; they're a signal to the audience that intermission is over and to head back to their seats. You can also see this performance of La Bohème there and I can't see it without hearing "She's coughing her brains out and she still has to sing."
*Note: The aria with the hands is Rodolfo and Mimì breaking up even though they really do love each other, but he knows that giving her up is better for her, because she's dying and he can't provide for her the way she needs him to. All the conflicting emotions.

We ate fried eggs in bread like that and the marinated peppers on the side are a staple in my family. Great reaction. Also: you didn't show it in your edit but at the end, when the camera stops on the picture of the old man and woman. It's the relatives or the ancestors. Both my sets of grandparents had "the relatives" on the wall. For Italian Americans, that actually has a meaning.

Another often overlooked movie with Cher was the phenomenal Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1976). This movie was adapted from a play and starred a very small, all woman cast shot on one interior set starring Sandy Dennis, Karen Black, Cher, and featuring a young Kathy Bates. Cher held her own with the incredible performances by Sandy Dennis and Karen Black (both masters at quirky, daring, neurotic characters). That's really saying something about her development as a serious actress. If you love Cher, and I believe you love Kathy Bates, you might love this flick.

I'm glad you liked this one! It would have been disappointing for you not to have. It's another movie you should watch more than once, as you'll get into the characters and the story more and more each time. You'll also appreciate the humor and the questions more each time. There's a lot here. For our family, natives of Brooklyn and NYC, this movie is great.
The cast is collection of greats. In addition to Cher, Cage and Olympia Dukakis, there is John Mahoney, who yes, was the father in "Frasier". Danny Aiello was Johnny. He has a fantastic range and is a gift to any movie he's in. Vincent Gardenia usually played a cop, but we got to know him as a recurring character on "All in the Family". Grandpa was Feodor Chaliapin Jr. His father was the great opera singer, also named Feodor Chaliapin. The fact that a lot of this story centers around an opera is a nice tie-in to this actor.
In NYC, just as a yellow light means "Speed Up!", a sign saying No Dogs Allowed is an invitation to bring in your dogs.
The man played the xylophone to tell everyone intermission is over and it was time to go back into the theatre for the rest of the opera.
Snow has a smell, yes, and you can definitely sense when it's going to snow.
The theater where they go to the opera is Lincoln Center, one of the prettiest placed in New York City. Right near it is Juilliard, the famous music and drama school. If you get to NYC at some point, you should definitely try to make it there, to stroll around, and to see an opera or a ballet. It's a lovey experience.
Another movie where Cher looks splendid, and is accompanied by two other beautiful, gifted actresses is "Witches of Eastwick", which also stars Jack Nicholson. It is a wild movie, and I like it.
