(1009) Challenge: Assa SCD Treasure Tube Picked & Gutted

  • In this video I take on a hand-built challenge lock designed to defeat picking attempts.
    Whipped videos highlight custom made locks sent to the LockLab as a challenge. They contain innovative modifications, unique security designs, and careful craftsmanship. Challenge lock design is difficult, to say the least, but many LockSporters excel in lock design and hand craftsmanship. Because there is such innovation among LockSporters, many manufacturers pay attention to the WHIPPED videos and incorporate the security techniques into their own locks.
    There is only ONE RULE: The key must work. You are free to cover up the key to prevent me from seeing it until after I successfully pick (or fail to pick) the lock. I will make THREE 10-minute attempts (down from six 10-minute attempts in April 2018). If I fail to open it in that time, it will become a WHIPPED video. If you are interested in sending a challenge lock, please use this address:

    I have a tip for these tiny Allen screws: Keep a set of Torx bits going one number at a time, like 5,6,7,8,9. These will fit those hexagonal holes tighter than any standard Allen key so that you could still control a screw well when you thought it was hopelessly stripped.

    as a non-locksmith/enthusiast, I still thoroughly enjoy watching these videos. I'd love to see how you re-assemble a lock, and an explanation of what anti-drill's are and maybe a demonstration on how they work.

    Those key holding "plugs" are also used to keep keys available for emergency personnels.
    I'm used to be a contract manufacturer making those tubes for car repair garages so that towing companies could leave the car keys when they dropped off a car at night.

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MoseyingFan Haha, around here they just used to use a mail slot in the door and a bucket inside. Any customer or tow company could just drop off keys, but not get them back, besides what use is the keys to a broken car. Then a gang started fishing out keys, copying key and car details, then putting the keys back so they could steal the repaired cars from the owners home months later. So now the dealers added better trap door mechanisms, still not sharing keys with tow companies. A few repair shops work two shifts and accept keys in person.

    Mr. William, since I haven't won any cool prizes (lock pick set) by registering on your website; I took your advice using windshield wiper blades to fashion picks with; they work; to a certain extent.
    Still a HUGE fan! Thanks Bill.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry you haven't won yet, I wish you the best of luck! In the meantime tho, windshield wiper inserts, especially the thickest one, can be turned into excellent picks. Feeler gage from spark plug gap tools works really well too. If you have access to a 3D printer, download the handles from the websites download section and put them on your picks. The end product is as good, if not better than the ones you buy from Peterson for BIG $$.

      Make sure to grind off the serrations and use water/oil as you grind so as to not ruin the heat treating

    These are all over Sweden. Tubes. Special key. Usually you place service key for landlord or maintenance guy in it. Is is mounted in high security doors or in concrete walls. Actually very nice. That way there is is only 1 key in door and optional to place a key in "the tube" for the person living there. One key for all tubes (in same bulding or company) and different in each door. All high sec locks. Kind of a hassle to get in or bypass unless you know what you are doing.

    To you, what are the differences between MadBob's notched ToK versus Peterson's serrated pry bar?
    You know how you (the general 'you') switch picks when you have trouble manipulating a lock? I tend to switch wrenches instead.
    Wrenches are more nuanced, harder to use well - for me.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Performance-wise, there is no difference at all. Dimensionally, the Mad Bob's are a bit thinner and fit more easily into narrow and paracentric keyways. Petersons fit better into North American locks. I DO like the serrations on the Peterson, but I have no basis for that other than personal preference.

    when you talk about pins 1-2-3-4-5-6 the highest number is that the deepest pin inside or how to understand ?

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not all locks number their pins that way, but I do as a matter of clarity and convenience. In my imaginary world, the deepest pin has the highest number.

    Hi Bosnianbill! Not sure if this is the right place to ask -- where can I actually purchase locks like these, which are not the typical Kwikset, Master, etc.? ASSA/Abloy, and other more secure brands don't seem to be sold on major online websites. I checked your "Where to buy stuff" page but they only seem to be for picking. Thank you!

    • @bosnianbill

      The only place (in the U.S.) that I've been able to find these locks is on eBay. There are Assa/Abloy dealers in N. America but I've never tried to buy from them directly.

      OceanKing6725 It depends what you consider cheap. I've made my own with .040 and .050 shim material and a hand file... if you want to buy them, lock-lab.com has links to many resources for purchasing and DIY options.

    • @OceanKing6725

    You need some t-handle allen wrenches. Screw those little angle wrenches.

  • @placeholder6266
    @placeholder6266 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I've been wondering, is it possible to remove a quickset cylinder from the front, as a possible bypass (the ones with clips, not the Titan style side bar)
    And is it possible to forego picking all together by using a long hook to push the pins all the way into the bible, forcing the slider to come off? I'm thinking on CIK style locks with enough room above to do so this would by a viable attack.

    • @RabidWolf1966
      @RabidWolf1966 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lok Doktor what I mean, is if, for instance, someone has locked themselves out of their house, and being a good friend, I pick the lock so they can get in. Also, do you have to be licensed to be a locksmith, or just have the know how and ability.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The laws vary by State, and sometimes even by County. In general, you must possess a locksmith license to open locks for profit. Some States/Counties also require certification training and a personal bond. The only way to be sure is to check your local laws BEFORE you try to do it. Find a friendly locksmith and ask what the local requirements are.

      Ano Nym I think you're just describing a dimple lock. He's picked plenty. If the key works either way you put it in the key hole, only half the dimples interact with pins at any one time. Still probably a good lock.

    Good picking :D But why give someone a key.... to unlock a look that hold another to key...... Why not just give ppl the key to open the door???? Something I'm missing

    • @JohnDoe-qx3zs

      Their key matches these tubes in the 50+ houses that their company has a contract with. The keys inside the tube are part of a matching key system used by the people working *in* a particular building. Also, opening the lock directly triggers alarms, cameras etc. to prove who opened the tube in case of misuse. If one of the service people loose their master lock, the service company needs to change 50 tube locks before house keys are stolen. house workers and their locks can stay unchanged. If a worker from a building looses his keys, locks in the building may need changing, and new ones put in the tubes, but the service people and people in other houses are unaffected.

    These cylinders are designed for use in steel safe tubes. Why they decided to use PVC ones, I don't know.

      There were 3 reasons for that.
      1. keep the weight down for cheeper postage.
      2. make a longer tube to fit in more Chocolate.
      (and more importantly)
      3. I didn't have one to send him.

    Hey Bosnianbill, I have an old GAURD security lock that I lost the key to a few months ago, and I cant get it open with any of my tools in my shop. Im gonna guess that it is not to hard of a lock to pick open, and I was going to give up and use a destructive entry method, but then I thought, "wait I should send it to bosnianbill" do you think if I sent you this lock to open however you want you could send me 1 Peterson Bogota rake? (like, as a trade?), Thanks

    • @paulrose4201
      @paulrose4201 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, I have a whole box of locks to send to you (probably to go the box of shame ) for a trade for some picks

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Z, I appreciate the offer but Guard locks, especially without keys, are not prime bartering material. I'd go with your original idea of destructive testing - just to take it out of circulation.;)

      bosnianbill alright how should I do it? Explosives (of course me behind a blast shield) ,or a drill, or a hammer, or liquid nitrogen? ( and I'm being totally serious with the liquid nitrogen)

      Maybe I SHOULD smoke something - at least I'd have an excuse. Instead, I'm just stupid... Seriously, I had just opened another package from Daniel and still had his name on my small, limited-capacity mind. Daniel was ricocheting around in there and had to come out. ;)
