It's easy to be dazzled by some of the other pianists (Trifonov comes to mind) because of their technical skill, speed and power. However, listening to this with an open mind I can see why she won. She makes the piano sing, and I hear things that I didn't know were there... things that I don't hear in other performances.

Agree! That's really what I thought too. Yulianna makes this Scherzo different things from other peformerces.

You're completely right, besides her musicality, also I think she won because she respects every single detail of the score, no a single omission of accents, dynamics, etc. Every single dynamic, ornament, articulation marks written by Chopin are played in her performances, and that, without talking about her obvious awareness about the harmony and musical form.
Other competitors may have played splendidly and within speed limits truly faster than hers, however due to this kind of virtuoso rush they tend to miss some of those little details that Chopin wrote in the score.

You hit the spot. But it´s exactly this kind of dazzler that the sensation-hungry audience love. It´s not like Yuliana Avdeeva doesn't have the highest technical skills. She just knows when something is needed. Like the Triffonovs, Buniatishvillis and Wangs, she is truly not an exhibitionist. That´s why her playing is so breathtaking.

Agree. This one, Fantasy Op.49, and Polonaise-Fantasie Op. 61 were the best ones, which certainly justify the 1st prize. Seems like she understands the true depth of the late works by Chopin.

Bravissima, not too many pianist could perform this Opus 54 in such a manner. It reminds me of great Chopin players from early 20th century piano's Golden Era. Avdeeva is on my watch list for long time now, and never disappoints me. Great performer, hope to listen more performances such as this one in the near future.

Explanation of Yulianna's unique mastery goes far beyond five physical senses. It comes from intuition, insight and spiritual inspiration expressed through enormous talent.

9:36-9:50 This part kills me every time. This filling of these various notes of the lower voices of the right hand with a subtle touch of the left hand! The pianist with the best tonal balance I've ever heard, I don't feel the feeling of fighting between hands that I feel in everyone else.

(It reminds me a lot of Alice Gi-Young Hwang’s recordings of the Scherzos online, which are also unknown, though the live one of this scherzo from the 2015 first round of the nationals is not as good in sound or performance.)

After 30 years of teaching and watching the generations become more and more dumbed down and their aesthetics destroyed I wonder she is known at all; I'm surprised that there are still recitals, concerts etc...

5:27 Listening to a good headphone inear, you can hear that she releases and presses the pedal to clean up the sound that I thought it didn't need, if she left it pressed, we would have interesting harmonics

All due respect, I find it hard to believe that someone participating is in a competition of this grade and stature, can criticize a fellow performer like this publicly. Surely a musician as yourself would understand the hardship and struggle it must take to win a competition like this. I don’t know if this is how you treat other musicians in competitive piano and this makes me glad I’m not heavily involved in it. And like you said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I suggest you respect the judges’ in this case. I can normally filter out the toxicity in the dark depths of comments on TH-cam, but this just kind of made me mad for some reason. I like music, but I’m not all that good at it and I find it weird I have to educate someone like you on basic etiquette when talking about other performers. But anyways, good luck in 2020, I’ll be watching the competition myself, as I could never dream to be skilled enough to play in it, and I hope that if you win the competition, some whiny participant won’t make a fuss saying that you didn’t deserve the fruits of your labor.

It is true that overall she played well during all the rounds. However, it's also true that she is not distinguished among winners. Cho could've easily won this competition if he had entered in 2010.

I’m sorry but you don’t get to decide who is “distinguished” among the winners. Cho’s Chopin is very beautiful but if you think he could have easily won against Avdeeva, you are just biased and delusional.
