Thank you so much for this video! I have always had trouble with running, I even hated it cause I always feel out of control and even nauseous at the end of running, BUT after watching your video I was just able to run 1 mile in 20 mins (which doesn’t seem a lot but for me it is) WITHOUT stopping and I feel great after it! Never in my life did I think this could happen! I am so happy I want to cry... Thank you 💕
I just saw a quote from the ultra runner Stian. He said "Running isn't fun until it's easy, so take the time to get fit. " That took away my guilt for feeling like a crappy runner, and not loving running every step. Slow and steady until the fun starts!
Hey James, I started running on the first day of lockdown. I could only run 1 km at a time before needing to rest. Last night, I ran a 5k in 24:53. I've absolutely got the bug. Your videos helped me through a really frustrating hip flexor injury - my glutes are pulling their weight now and it's finally paying off! Thanks for all your content, I'm going to try the breathing tip!
Just a quick "thank you" for all the time and effort you put into the fantastic and informative videos on your channel James. I'm a beginner and have learned so much from your practical, pragmatic videos on real-life challenges faced by all runners. Thanks very much, it's much appreciated.
Important reminders! I always tell new runners to focus on upping their cadence and remember to stay relaxed. Most common mistake I see is people trying to do too much too quickly.
I just found your channel because of your “running with asthma” video and I really appreciate your videos and they inspire me to keep trying to run and not give up.
This guy is ON POINT! Especially about skiing while you run. There is a reason the Marines chant while they run. I use the old Marine Corps “Feels Good! PT! GOOD FOR YOU, AND GOOD FOR ME! I’m subscribed and enjoying the BEST run coaching/info channel I’ve seen in the past 5 years of my running quest. This guy is GREAT! 👍🏽
I have followed your advice for some time now. I have tons of problems in my body with real disability, and I am a bit too heavy. So, I have practice every morning and evening your videos. Something happened with my running in treadmill, and it feels oddly like I relax my feet when forward. "it cannot be this easy!" The movement comes when the foot is under, not before... I am just rolling with it.
I’ve always hated running all my life !! Been at it 5-6 days a week now for the last 3 months. I always ‘had’ issues with tight calf’s, no issues whatsoever now as I always stretch in the correct way. I’m a keen cyclist Aswel been cycling 6 miles each way for the last 6 years 5 nights a week. 2 VITAL things that I’ve learnt and to me are the MOST important thing when jogging/running is: PACE, I jog slow with quick steps and short strides, and knowing how to BREATHE is absolutely vital!!! Learnt that over the years with my cycling Aswel. You need to get your mindset into a harmonious rhythm with breathing, if you start huffing and puffing and panicking you won’t go very far
Great tips again James. Even as an experienced running it’s still good and sometimes necessary to be reminded of the basics now and again 👍🏻 Love the butterfly/crisps analogy. I LOVE crisps!
Agree, the relaxes hands thing is actually hard to keep in mind during a run, but I've also seen a video by an Olympian runner saying this, so it's probably better to keep trying ^^
Whenever I’m dreading going out on a run, I simply tell myself that I’m going to scale back on my pace and go slow; the idea is being consistent day after day and something is better than nothing 😃
Hi James - just wanted to say thanks so much for putting such great, informative content out there! I too am asthmatic and, despite being in good shape having rowed for the past 6 months, running is fairly new to me. Signed up to the GNR in Sept, with a 10k by way of ‘prep’ in May. Went for a run last night and my asthma was awful after running just a mile. Watched your video to try and rectify this. Did 50% longer tonight, using your 3 steps per inhale/exhale technique (inter alia), and my asthma was almost completely fine!! Thanks again for your help, James! Greatly appreciated! 👌
A lot of great ideas here!! Great work James!!! One thing I wish I did when I was a beginner runner, was to focus on going slower and doing more stretching. Building my mileage properly, would have prevented injury! Super excited for you though if you are a beginner runner!! It is such an amazing experience that, you get a lot of PRs when you start off. Cherish those PRs. They get harder the more you run.💪 Stay focused and looking towards your goals.
This is the best video I ever watched for me as a beginner, particularly the arm motion. I noticed your heel touching the ground when demonstrating higher cadence/shorter strides. Does this mean it's ok to heel strike or would you recommend midfoot landing?
Hey James your right about smile back on someone walking towards you I go for my 3-4 x and week . In returne I ge thums up or phrase me great tips aesome 👍👍
That smiling tips does really help. I always run on the jogging track at the park near my house and there's this homeless old man who always cheering every runners. I always smile at him when he cheered on me and it feels like energy boost.
I’m 61, quit smoking 6 months ago and started walking 5 miles a day since June. I’ve added running to my routine and noticed the best I can manage at a shuffle pace (5mph)is 2 breaths in 2 out. Should I keep trying to get to 3 in 3 out? Also I ran sub 5:30 miles in my 20’s do I still have any muscle memory from 35 years ago?
So much good informarion. Thank You, James Recently, I started using the Metronome function on my Coros Pace 2. Its default cadence is 180. Was suprised that I could stay in sync with it beeping that fast. Although, my pace was only about 9:30min/mile. Need to land with foot nearly flat and body mass over nearly straight leg. Push through until heels point to the sky. All to hopefully increase my stride length. My legs are a bit short. I'm 5' 6" with a 28" inseam. What stride length should I try to achieve? Thanks
Loving these mate. Is it possible to do one for flat feet? I've heard a lot of speculation about using minimalist shoes for running with flat feet but would like a more informed opinion I'm skeptical of a lot of channels where they might be good runners but they don't necessarily understand it well enough because it comes to them naturally. And they have no foundation in body mechanics either.
Help please! What can I do to get rid of diaphragm pain when running? I tried running with an empty stomach or 4 hours after lunch but I still have this issue, I then tried to breathe with the nose instead of mouth and yes it got better at least it seems since I did it just yesterday for the first time and I'll try that again today, it got better but I still have that pain on the right side of my diaphragm, what could causes it and how can I fix it?
Hey, with the breathing thing, am I literally meant to breath in-in-in out-out-out or am i meant to breathe in for 3 physical steps on the ground, and out for 3 physical steps on the ground? Thanks!
For first three days before running. You muuuudssssst stretch legs with out the pounding of running since its not going to be able to unfpderstand where vessel is of best use. Stretch . No weight work out and yoga for first day
I’m finding this running thing so painful and annoying! My cadence is about 155 but my heart rate goes up to 170 So much advice is run slower, yet I’m only running at about 8 minutes per 1km. Surely if I increase my cadence I will be running faster? And also a higher cadence will increase my heart rate at the same time?
It takes a long time to trust someone who seems to be taking us through the garden path strewn with pain and anguish but promising of better days which never come😎

10:01 "Smile, it'll make life a lot easier", so true James, rarely a truer word spoken. Thank you for yet another great video!

@Kate R I don't think there is any - just determination! I'm down to 23:28 now but it's hard work and not a straight route either!
@@myknowledgespiral thank you so much!
Yes the positive attitude when you are faced with an obstacle is very crucial.
I started running regularly at the start of the pandemic and just recently found this channel. There is so much useful information here. Thank you!
so looking forward to trying these on my next run

I thought I'd never have that two way conversation while running. But it does get better! Great advice
Wow! Great tips! Will sure to try out all!!!

5:15 my arms wont even touch the wall in this position, guess i got some work to do with those stretches!
When I run I just breathe normally through my nose but the posture thing really helped me on my last run thanks
Breath with mouth or nose?
I run nasally diaphragmlicly and rythem just reached 4 MPH for 1 hour I attempted to strengthen the plantar fascia and ankles
Hi James,
Thank you for this video.
I'm an Asthmatic Singer,
Can you prescribe any proper excersise for me
Thanko thankso

How to get rid of burning feet while running ??
Better socks, better shoes. Getting a pair of synthetic socks helped immensely.
As a runner with long nails (stay done) I literally cannot clench my fist. Stay winning.
😂😂😂😂😂
I'm lucky to break 118 spm
those eyes are intense!
like one of my friends say, act like youre holding an egg while running. very light and relaxed.
It takes a long time to trust someone who seems to be taking us through the garden path strewn with pain and anguish but promising of better days which never come😎
Just run Yes, it's that simple. Of course it's hard if your new to it. Talking? ......just go have a cup of tea.
