  • Neanderthals lived for 300,000 years in Europe. We will never know much about their behavior because they went extinct 40,000 years ago. We know they were intelligent and had many human characteristics. So what would happen if Neanderthals never went extinct?

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      You have to ask yourself, what makes a "species"? If neanderthal and humans can breed and produce viable offspring, which we know now is the case, then were they really two distinct species? Well, we consider syberian tigers and bengal tigers to be unique species, just as we consider North American wolves and European Gray wolves to be unique species, but the fact is that they can interbreed just fine and produce hybrid offspring. The most modern recreations of Neanderthals makes them not that much different in appearance to Caucasians, and in fact if they were still around today we would likely just consider them a different race. After all, no one would confuse an unmixed Australian aborigini woman to be a Swedish woman, as they look extremely different... in fact far more different than North American and European wolves look to one another. So if we treated humans the way we do all other animals in classification, its very likely that we would consider each major human race to be its own species, or at the very least sub-species. After all, just in Africa alone we have identified 13 subspecies of giraffe, and yet we don't admit that there are any subspecies of humans in spite of obvious difference in bone structure, skin tone, hair, eye color, musculature, average height, etc.

      Sorry, but the different modern human races do not meet the criteria to be considered separate species, or even subspecies. Not even close. In fact, humans are far more closely related to one another than most other examples of separate populations of a single species. Genetic evidence suggests that this is because of what is called a genetic bottleneck early on in homo sapiens history, where some natural disaster, climate change, or other event led to a large part of the population dying off, leaving only a small population of around 10000 individuals alive.
      The point is, humans from across the globe are all so genetically similar that there's no way they could be considered separate subspecies.

    • @remisteele8904
      @remisteele8904 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Athaleyah Baht-Yisrael
      I'm pretty sure your definition of 'scientific fact' is slightly... well, it's completely wrong.
      There is zero real evidence to support the existence of nephilim, giants, or the deluge as depicted in the abrahamic religions.
      And while the ancestors of 'white people' DID, in fact, interbreed with Neanderthals, this interbreeding occurred mainly in the middle east, when modern humans first migrated out of Africa. This is why genetic studies show that not only Europeans, but also individuals from the middle east, central Asia, and even east Asia, have genetic markers passed down from Neanderthal ancestors.

    I had a keen interest in Anthropology in college and minored in it back in the 90's. I had asked my professor in class about the possibility of interbreeding causing the Neanderthals extinction. He laughed and said that "none of the traits appear to have carried over to Homo sapiens." This is of course before we cracked the human genome. I wonder if he even remembers that moment?

Later, they found another Neanderthal, that had good bone structure, and wasn't crooked like the first one they found. Neanderthal is a name to offend people by basically saying they're dumb, but that's only a thing because the scientists got some things mixed up. They simply made a mistake. I'm not trying to offend anyone or something like that, I'm just pointing this out.

    Given the history of imperialism and colonialism in this timeline, I think yours is (sadly) the most logical scenario. The one aspect that you neglected to mention is that hybrid creatures that have parents of two different species (like mules) are often sterile. But the conclusion would be the same - bred out of existence.
    That said, you should read Robert Sawyer's "Neanderthal Parallax" triliogy (if you haven't already). Jean Auel also had some interesting ideas that she presented in her novel series.

    All people of non-African descent are related to the neanderthals by between 2 and 6%. Also, southeast Asians and Native Americans are also related to the Denisovans by about 2%. Both groups most likely interbred as traits associated with them are found in modern Humans in certain areas where those ancient people would have found each other.

East Asians and Native Americans have a bit more than Europeans, then South Asians and Southeast Asians have a bit more than East Asians but Papuans and Australian Aboriginals have the most Denisovan inlfluence at about 5% - 6%.

      TheDeadFolk If I remember correctly there is a saga talking about that, The reason they explain in the saga is that the natives just were not having any of it, they would constantly raid the one village they had set up. The Viking were constantly moving more in land down the saint lawrence, with evidence sudgesting they made it quite far with nuts they were eating and bringing back which grew nearly exclusively along the river. However they were never able to communicate or set up trade with the natives so it just became too hard and very unsafe so yes it wasnt worth it, not becasue there wasn't resources just they couldnt use them safely or productively. The saga does state they tried again but it ended the same except the natives this time didnt even let them get past their main ship port. But this is a saga and they should always be taken with a grain of salt
      TL;DR
      Natives wouldnt let them set up shop for very long, and refused to communicate or trade with them so they decided to just leave

    Neteadrathals are actually stronger physically. Estimated similar intellect they would live like humans. More meat needed higher caloric intake. They would basically be a violent warrior Hunter gatherer society contending with modern man.
    It is believed they had less capacity for imagination thus more likely would absorb innovations of nearby tribes.
    The lack of population comparably from innovations such as agriculture would lead to a smaller population size pushing them further north. They would basically survive like the Sami. The lack of megafauna would lead to more raids on homo sapien settlements. They would most likely get shorter and be living in a state of near constant starvation.
    It's kind of like asking what if direwolves survived the death of megafauna.

      Eric Claeyborn There are clearly defined areas where muscle and ligament attach to bones. We can also do xray scans of brain cavities to see the shape and size of brains. We can also estimate intelligence and the strength of senses based on the size and shape of parts of the brain, since just about everything has the same basic layout. ie the brain stem is always in the back and under the brain connected to the spinal column, the frontal lobe is always in the front and towards the top of the brain, etc.

If they raised it as their own would people accept it? Would it be able to learn a modern human language and fit into society? Would it have, as a technically separate species, the same rights as humans?

      Anthropologists did find enough preserved soft tissue from the toe of a Neanderthal that the genome was sequenced and compared to modern humans. that's why it is known that Neanderthals and Home-sapiens-sapiens interbred and a certain percentage of eastern Europeans and Mongolians can have more than 2% Neanderthal DNA.

      Yeah. If, like the video says, civilization begins on the very edge of Neanderthal "territory" it is entirely plausible that they, as much as humans, laid the foundations of some of the earliest great civilizations which would have been an effective barrier against conquest by homo-sapiens, and unknowingly protected the more peripheral Neanderthal societies.

    The majority of European peoples today, notable exceptions are the Basques, Chechens, Hungarians, and Finns, are descended from the Indo-Europeans, a group that had originated from the Pontic-Caspian Steppe. If in the end, the Neanderthals are replaced by Persians or Egyptians, keep in mind, the Indo-Europeans still exist. Very likely, these Indo-Europeans would still spread out and settle Europe, which in our timeline, was around 2000 BCE. The only people who would have a chance of being gone would be the Basques, as they came to Europe before the Indo-Europeans.

      * ISIS grows stronger worldwide, eventually forcing bankrupt Europe (remember, she took away the corporations that were based in the US, which formed a large part of their economy) to surrender. Radical Islam becomes the dominant religion, and millions of Christians and Jews are killed in genocides if they don't convert.

      I'm glad you raised this point, because the video assumed that homo sapiens would change the way they did in the real timeline, but Neanderthals would stay exactly the same. Why assume that?
      Being on the same contingent, ideas would have been exchanged. An interesting alternate history would explore what their real biological differences would have influenced.
      From what I remember, Neanderthals had larger eyes and visual cortexes but were less verbal. They made art but might not have talked. How would such a culture have springboarded off of homo sapiens?

    • @brianmerion
      @brianmerion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wavium While you're correct under most circumstances, in this case you're wrong. Brain size correlates with intelligence in human and hominid species, and the skull cavities of Neanderthal suggest a greater intelligence... though it is only conjecture. As Rs Rt said above, the temporal and parietal lobes were particularly massive, and the ratio between this area and the rest of the brain is almost always used to measure hypothetical intelligence in many extinct species, not just hominids.

      David A. *****
      The amount of genes is meaningless compared to the quality and position of the genes - we share 95% of our genes with domestic cats, yet we are not very cat-like.
      Less solar radiation and lacking nutrition did create the pale complexes for the neanderthal during the ~400 000 years they dwelled eurasia, but humans, who moved out of africa some 100 000 years ago, were dark skinned still some 10 000 years ago in central europe. What I'm suggesting is that neanderthal genes made the process of becoming "white" much quicker since the mutations were already constructed to pass on.
      And I found the article I had read, it's a National Geographic writing on two studies that were completed in 2014.
      "Some parts of non-African genomes are totally devoid of Neanderthal DNA, but other regions abound with it, including those containing genes that affect our skin and hair. This hints that the Neanderthal gene versions conferred some benefit, and were kept during evolution."
      "Despite their different approaches, both teams converged on similar results. They both found that genes involved in making keratin-the protein found in our skin, hair, and nails-are especially rich in Neanderthal DNA."
      "For example, the Neanderthal version of the skin gene POU2F3 is found in around 66 percent of East Asians, while the Neanderthal version of BNC2, which affects skin color, among other traits (such as freckles), is found in 70 percent of Europeans."

    Actually, some people do have a small amount of Neanderthal DNA. Guess who tends to have it? Europeans and asians at ~2% of their genome. Guess who doesn't? Africans, the people who didn't migrate through Europe. Based on this, I'd say that neanderthals may have been bred out of existence as their own species.
    Although I learned about it through my bio courses, here's a link that gives some info:

      Vampire Lord Vladimir you really got it all wrong lol. You cant compared a black and white human to a human and Neanderthal. Our internal and physical differences are very great with Neanderthals in terms of brain size, skull size, bone density etc whereas all humans are 99.5% similar

    What about the other species of humans? Those little island folk or the extremely hairy ones that lived in caves. There weren't *just* humans and Neanderthals, there was a shitload of other species.

      @evansdrad The celtic nationalist people can't read apparently. I said MARKERS - not DNA %.
      The 23 and me test has now upped it to 90% - meaning of all of the pool of people they have tested, I have 90% markers.
      Please don't tell me what my test results are. Learn how to read 1st. Thanks.

      It's possible but the DNA samples we have are damaged due to how long they have been extinct. I think at best, we'll be able to create a hybrid between our species as it will likely require using our own dna to fill in what is damaged.
      This is what will happen if they bring back a mammoth, they will have to use the dna of an existing elephant, get it pregnant with mammoth dna, and she will give birth to a new species of Mammoth, but it'll still be pretty close to the original.
      It is technically possible to recreate dinosaurs in our own image by using bird dna, but we could never actually bring back any exact species as no Dino DNA exists. At best though, it is theoreticaly possible to replicate dinosaurs, although we won't know for sure how close the specimen would be. It is basically just a scientific experiment that would create a new species. It may be possible to create what we perceive as Raptors.
