    DAMN... inconsistent information....... this is what i heard: 🔥🔥🔥Fuel on first........ Fuel off first.🔥🔥🔥 Here, this instructor says differently..... whom to believe? And WHY? If anyone wants to answer, must describe/ explain WHY.

      I've heard so many contradictions on this topic. I've done both with no problems. Granted, I don't do it as much as some do it every day. I think if anything, we need to look at the times where problems happen when shutting off the oxy-acyt and see what caused it and go from there. Seems like if there is no leaks or faulty equipment, then it doesn't matter since both ways are always recommended.

    To all you arguing about proper shut off order, RTFM. Only the manufacturer is going to know whats best for their equipment. Some of them want you to do O2 first, some want the fuel off first. Do what they say. If you don't want to read the manual please get an office job, you should not be working with tools that can kill or injure other people or pets.

    So which really is the best way to cut off the gases for a oxy-acyt torch? I've seen both recommended, which would lead one to believe that it doesn't matter. But then I hear about the times where it does matter and bad things happen with improper shut off. So which is the right way?

    "shut off acetylene first. Turn it on first - turn it off first."
    This is what I was told just a few days ago by my instructor. Also the proper shut down procedure can be read in "how to weld" by Todd Bridigum, this also says to turn off the fuel gas first.

      I agree with you. That’s the method that I follow as well. Let’s say your torch does not come with flash back arrestors, by shutting off the acetylene valve first, you eliminate the chance of the flame burning back to the tank. Simultaneously, you have oxygen blowing out the tip, thus, restricting any possibility of a flame burning past the torch tip. Perhaps the person in the video has flashback arrestors?

      @@realWhy-not-DIY what I been told … if you are working with large tips , you are going to get a pop if you turn off the fuel first .. A before O except when you turn off .. then O before A .. with smaller tips it not matter as much .. but oxygen should be off first.
      That’s what I have heard. I not have a torch yet , suppose to come tomorrow lol
      Just saying.

    • @realWhy-not-DIY
      @realWhy-not-DIY ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisalovelylpa interesting. You're absolutely right about the popping sound when shutting off the acetylene first. I've also heard of the shutdown method you described. I guess, as long as we don't blow ourselves up, then either way is good. But all jokes aside, I've shut off the torch both ways with no issues.

  • @Centar1964
    @Centar1964 11 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    This is the correct way to logically shut down a torch, oxy 1st, as it is the opposite way of turning on a torch and if the fuel is turned off 1st the tip flashbacks making a pop and the oxy is left running with no flame indication and could be overlooked and left running.....

    • @SeriousSchitt
      @SeriousSchitt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig Diamond Interesting... I got my Gas Welding Plant some 27 years ago in 1988. I remember that I read 'thoroughly' the instructions, however, I've read them again recently and it says to turn the fuel valve off first! I, however, have ALWAYS done it the way it's mentioned in this video by turning the Oxy off first! I have no idea how I got into this habit (unless it was a mates father who told me many years ago) but, I see things exactly your way and I've never come to grief. If the acetylene is happily burning by itself when you light the torch up then it should happily burn on it's lonesome when you shut the torch down!

    • @adamelektronik21
      @adamelektronik21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, there is a good reason why its recommended to shut fuel first. In case of tiny leakage of fuel valve on the torch, if you close oxygen first, then fuel, there would be small flame burning within the torch (inside) and might cause fire. If you close fuel while oxygen still running, it extinguishes the flame.

    • @JoshuaZiesmer
      @JoshuaZiesmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamelektronik21 The manual for my Victor torch states to turn off the oxygen first, explaining that turning off the fuel first can cause a backfire witch sends soot back through the torch and can interfere with the arrestors and check valves. Running the oxygen to blow out the fuel gas, only works with the oxygen side of the torch, there will still be fuel gas in the fuel side of the torch, most of which will burn off when you shut off the valve.

    Pay attention to how he shuts down the torch. THIS IS WRONG. page 5-15 in the Airframe VOl. 1 handbook published by the FAA on welding and how to turn on and off an oxy acetylene torch, you first shut off the acetylene and then the oxygen. Cutting the oxygen first leaves you with a large flame and could be potentially dangerous.

    Hello, I just bought an entire Harris OxyAcet welding & cutting, mixer, regs and tips. The welding tip size I got is 5 and cutting tip size is 0. Can you recommend the width variation for each? i.e. welding tip 5 can weld 1/16 to 1/4 etc.., since at this time I cannot purchase another size(s) of either. I am very impressed with Harris equipment and after setting everything up and checking with LeakTec there have been NO leaks and no change in tank pressure after 12 hours!! If you ever need a woman welder to "sponsor" :) let me know!

  • @TherapyCatStudios
    @TherapyCatStudios 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Waterman117 the idea is that you want a flow of oxy to blow out any acetylene in the torch and blow any spark outward, preventing flashback through the hose.

    well arent you supposed to blow the flame off the tip then bring it back to adjust it? and just crack the acetylene when u light it then adjust your flame... and turn on your preheat to make a neutral flame??

  • @Harrisproductsgroup1
    @Harrisproductsgroup1  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is not recommended. In an oxy-fuel setup the oxygen is doing the work and it needs to be high-purity oxygen (99.5 percent minimum) in order to be effective.

    I've always wanted to know what the flame would look like if instead of an oxy tank, you connect an air compressor to the oxy inlet ? I've never worked with a torch, but I have seen a lot of them in use. I guess it will just blow it out.

    • @DiffEQ
      @DiffEQ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why? Atmospheric air is only about 21% oxygen so what's the point? Not enough oxidizer for the fuel gas and you're also introducing impurities and relatively inert gasses (Nitrogen, predominately, though not technically a noble gas.).

    • @Bettinasisrg

      There are different schools of thought on this, but it is taught now to do as was demonstrated in this video; Turn on torch=Fuel Oxy, Turn Off torch=Oxy Fuel. One reason is mentioned by another poster is that Oxy can be accidently left running as it has no sound or smell like fuel gas, also it can travel easier into the Acet side due to the pressure which Acet doesn't have like O2. Thats what I was taught a couple years ago in my welding class anyway.

    • @harleybanting4865

      I was taught A before O or up you go. The logic I thought was because the oxygen expels from the nozzel at a higher velocity so there is less chance of it to backfire instead of the acetylene which stays in the line after its shut off.
