    It was probably a long time coming for me to discuss a lot of this in the video. Like I said, I have before, but not really to this extent. One thing I should mention, though, is about giving the projects away or selling them. It's not something I'm apposed to, but I honestly have no idea how I'd ship any of this... Is there something I'm not thinking of? Definitely something to work out moving forward. Anyway, let me know what you think, enjoy the video, and have a great weekend!

I know it is extra work, but a lot of your fans are willing to compensate you for it just to have one of your builds.

      @@Twohomst yes, But scale matters.
      Lakes are a little bigger than 10 gallons or whatever this jug is and at least have some small amount of current/waves keeping things moving and oxygenated and they are also deep enough not to be so bright with sunlight at the depths that it gets swarmed by algae.
      Even most ponds which are massive in comparison to this are green and gross no matter how much wildlife are in them because the water stays relatively still and they are generally shallow such that sunlight reaches the depths which keeps the water warm and bright which is ideal for algae

    • @Hekateras
      @Hekateras ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MidwestFarmToys @Twohomst You're both only half-right. Scale matters, of course, larger systems will be more inert and harder to disrupt. The sheer amount of water in a large aquarium will buffer against rapid changes.
      But it's not like natural lakes are exempt from this problem either. Lake eutrophication is a frequent issue. Algae growth can easily take over a lake and make it very oxygen-poor within a few months, limiting the number of fish species that can survive there.
      Nutrient availability is the main thing driving algal blooms - sunlight is abundant, but nutrients are the limiting factor. A lake "tipping"into the eutrophic state is usually caused by increased nutrient input, whether it's fertiliser runoff from nearby farms or lots of dead organic matter.
      Compare a setup like this, where limiting the nutrients in the water is a pretty major part of the design. People commenting on the previous video are obviously ignorant of the fact that the waste fish excrete, ammonia, is in a form that is directly taken up by the roots of aquatic plants. As long as dead plant matter is removed from the water so it can't decay (and add nutrients to the water), and as long as the fish population is kept sparse, the tank is in no real danger of "tipping".

    I've found that in a lot of pet keeping hobbies, there is a lot of faux knowledge floating around that is a mixture of marketing and people projecting emotions onto animal behavior. Fish bowls being bad for example probably stems more so from the fact that they have poor filtration and are small in size. And not as much from "distorted view". But a lot of people project "imagine if you lived in a small bowl with distorted images all day" onto the fish. And I'm sure that aquarium sellers benefit from selling larger aquariums.
    If the animal looks healthy and behaves healthy, it's probably safe to say that it is doing just fine.

    • @christamarch947
      @christamarch947 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I agree. The issue with fish bowls was always they are too small, and many times improperly maintained, for the fish put in the bowl. Many do not grasp how big a specific type of fish can get. I've never heard of the view being an issue. I think this build is fantastic. 👍

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      True, setup really does take the most time and effort but when it's done right with any type of bioactive setup, all you really need to worry about is controlling the flora and keeping the fauna fed and healthy. Setup is still my favorite part because I'm not fond of maintenance, but that's why I only have planted fishtanks, especially stem plants do a lot of the work for me and I've even learned to accept the duckweed invasion I can never get away from since it grows so rapidly it's really just free filtration and free food to my herbivores when it comes time to cut back on its numbers. Free salad is nice, though duckweed control is the majority of the maintenance I do ^^'

That would be fun to see how things are coming along, help explain and demystify the process of caring for projects long-term, and also show folks that it's ok if some plants do better than others or to sometimes have to tweak a setup after seeing it run for a couple weeks.
    Keeping intricate closed-system projects does still require upkeep, and seeing how that can be accomplished would be really educational (and help set reasonable expectations) for people who want to try it themselves at home.

    Dude. I just want to say that I hands down admire you and your work. I have no doubt that you can literally do anything, and you’ve done an amazing job showing that. Not to mention, you’ve been an awesome inspiration for my ten year old. She adores you. She loves to watch how you explain EVERYTHING. And I love you for that! You’ve seriously shown her how to think outside the box. I’m sorry that I cannot contribute to your channel, but just know that have truly shown my child that you can do anything with a tank with some patience and imagination. Thank you!!!!

    Sadly, when putting yourself out there, people (some) will feel the need to strike (from behind a keyboard of course). I find your kind manner and enthusiasm for your craft refreshing and helpful. Keep doing what you're doing to inspire us and addressing your comments should you feel the need, but for me ... it brings me peace.

    Those types of comments can be frustrating to deal with, but like you said they may be coming from genuinely curious people and just want to know the processes behind the builds so I believe this form of video really addresses them in a proper way. Amazing job as always, Tanner!

    this is one of my favourite builds! i wish i had the energy to have an aquarium (and maintain it) but i sadly don't so this is the next best thing. the fish are also super neat looking, the petstore near me only has tetras so i really enjoy seeing something else :)

    I'm really appreciating this video about cleaning. Not that I had any doubt that you maintain your tanks well, but discovering online vivariums for the first time, I appreciate to see online somewhere how to do maintenance on these, as you said, per environments.

    It was another fun video to see again! Thanks for sharing this update :)
    I had no idea there were issues with a round bowl for fish (I don't have any aquatic pets in my home and my pond outside is square..) Lesson learned today :D
    I can imagine, due to the sheer size of the container, the fact that it's round but really big, might be why the fish view isn't bad all.
    As for people who commented with those comments... I think, if they watched the earlier video properly and had seen other videos made by you, they would know these are things you think about and have solved in one way or another in the project.
    It's good you showed it, nonetheless, just to give us all some extra knowledge :)
    I wish you and your family a great weekend!

    I appreciate all your updates! It took me several months to start making successful terrariums and your videos really helped. It also helps that you're so honest about what worked and didn't work for you. It's useful info, and reassuring for someone who hasn't been doing this for very long.

    I love this bottle. I have been watching a long time. I love to see you create things. I would also love to see the maintainance. I'm a want to be gardener am just trying to do small beta setups with plants at this time. Don't let the people giving you a hard time get to you. You explain well and encourage experimentatin.
    You give us the desire to try and hunt our environment for plant specimines. Your like the good teachers that we remember forever.

    I really enjoy your update videos. I somehow managed to stumble across some of your very early videos, back when they were very infrequent. Earlier this year I came across one of your update videos and was reminded that I had seen the original builds. I was really happy to see not only had you continued to create videos but turned it into a full time job. It's awesome to see be able to make a living doing something they love. Keep up the great work Tanner I look forward to seeing what amazing projects you create in the future. Oh and please more updates!

    Your channel doesn’t fall into my typical genre of content that I enjoy daily. However, its one of my favorite channels. And the process of your builds is explained incredibly thoroughly. I feel like some of the things you got criticism for were things that wouldn’t typically need to be explained to someone who knows a little bit about fish keeping. But I understand that a lot of people come here to learn things and may not already know about aquarium maintenance. I learn tons from this channel as well as get inspiration for housing my animals in more natural and beautiful enclosures

Personally, I know that you have the intelligence and artistic flair to know what does and does not need to be involved with your projects, and surely it is up to you how long you keep your pieces, and even if you do, without questioning you about it. Love your work, and am grateful that you are demonstrating your work. Focus on the positive!

    I stumbled on your channel a while ago and really enjoy your videos. I think a lot of people either over estimate the maintenance needed in this type of setup or work with systems that do not have lots of plants. Your designs are truly inspired by nature. Tanner, this is a fantastic build. You obviously take a lot of care and consideration in what you do. I started watching your videos because I wanted a mini-indoor water feature, with plants around it. I was not disappointed and my own version 18 mths later is going to need some attention very soon as the plants have got so big. Thank you so much for all the fab ideas.
